What was the name of the late eighties / early nineties American TV show where a priest and a nun solved crimes?

I've been trying to remember it for a couple of days, but I can't. The priest was this rather old guy with gray hair and bulldog cheeks, and I think he was played by some semi-known actor. The nun was considerably younger, and I remember as a kid I though she was hot. Someone please help me with the title!

They were showing it on BBC1 back to back with Diagnosis: Murder back when I was unemployed. Oh, guilty pleasures.

Yeah, that's it! Thanks Kate and everyone!

But Tuomas, it's shit.

It was on right before "Misfits of Science"

Nowadays Fr Dowling is assigned full-time to the Paedophile Priest Investigation Unit.

Le Marquis de Salade (noodle vague), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea if it is shit, I was like ten or eleven when they started showing it here.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

'Solving Crimes' indeed...

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

I was just warning you. I know what the heady glow of childhood nostalgia can do to a programme.

Le Marquis de Salade (noodle vague), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

To catch a paedophile, Father Dowling must first get inside the mind of a pervert.

This Week: Father Dowling fails to solve the mystery of a priest with a dark secret stretching back 30 years. Rating: Un-fucking-believable

Oh, I loved Sister Stephanie -- hairpin GENIUS, I tellz ya. There's nothing like a wimple for hiding an impromptu lock-pick.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, I loved that show! It's around the same time I read a truckload of Agatha Christie novels. *sigh*

In one episode, Sister Steve posed as a prostitute to catch a murderer. She offered to have sex with her first client for $5,000, was laughed off, then promptly arrested when she cut her rates to try and bed an undercover cop.

I always knew Fr Downey as The Glad Bag Man.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

And he was Sheriff Amos in "Murder, She Wrote"!

(clearly I'm a loser)

Ohmigod, I loved Murder She Wrote. And not just because of her name.

[without bothering to check anywhere else on the web] Was the priest the Mr C character from Happy Days?

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 17 November 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

And he was Sheriff Amos in "Murder, She Wrote"!

I disliked Angela Lansbury so much, but I couldn't stop watching the show. hah.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 17 November 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

I think Angela Lansbury is hilarious (though necessarily not in a good way) because I've seen Bedknobs and Broomsticks too many times. I just couldn't get enough of that programme because it was so... obvious. The plotlines were so thin they'd be ruined by a sneeze. And she was just so brisk and breezey while people were dropping like flies in this little tiny New England village(honestly! Did no one notice how high the murder rates were there? DO NOT INVITE THIS WOMEN TO YOUR HOME!!! PEOPLE WILL DIE!!! See also, "In The Heat Of The Night" which I loved because of Sheriff (Bobby) Gillespie)

And, erm... what was I on about? I think it's time for some coffee.

Tweed as F*ck (kate), Thursday, 17 November 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

one of the most annoying busy-bodies on television

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 17 November 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

I had the real hump about "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" purely because of that "He's at the age of not believing" song. grrrr

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 17 November 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

I saw an episode of MSW guest-starring Bill Maher as the SHIRTLESS HUNK.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 17 November 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Tracy "Sister Steve" Nelson also played Jennifer DeNuccio in the TV show Square Pegs. Although Jamie Gertz was the hottie in that one.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 17 November 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

She is the sister of NELSON, no? She was also Alex P. Keaton's feminist girlfriend on an episode of Family Ties and George Costanza's Girl-Jerry on Seinfeld.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 17 November 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

I was wondering how to make ends meet, and then I saw Tom Bosley on the tv. Now I've turned my home computer into a money-making machine! I got orders for $5,000, $10,000, even $50,000 dollars! Thanks, Specialty Merchandise Corportation!

I sold this beautifully detailed Cowboy Sculpture:
http://www.aarons-artifacts.com/Images/western/30737.jpg
It sells for $49.95 retail. I only paid $16.65. That's a pure profit of $33.30!
You can make your computer work for you!
