Taking sides: Earl Grey tea vs b-side compilation albums

One is a mellow brew perfumed with bergamot oil; the other is a useful stop-gap for recording artists who have not yet completed their next album. But which is better, and why?

Earl Grey is always pleasant where B-side compilation albums are often flawed.

tea

that jam b-sides comp goes great with earl grey.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 17 November 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

what i meant to say was "i favour the tea-side over the b-side"

earl grey tea. it is refreshing and provides a welcome break from the morning's tedium and also has a lovely fragrance. b-side compilations are usually a bit irritating and only exacerbate one's sense of anticipation for the actual album.

I knew this'd be a col thread.

B-side compilation albums. Many bands live a secret b-side life in which they're actually interesting and adventurous, whereas Earl Grey is often somewhat bitter and unsatisfying.

This thread is progressing excellently. The background is this: I am going downstairs soon, and there is a record store, but also a cornershop. I really feel like buying some earl grey, but on the other hand I have been wondering whether there might be any b-side compilations in the record shop that might be even more enjoyable? So, continue.

moley (moley), Thursday, 17 November 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

Ah, surely you can download the B-sides on your computer while you go to the cornershop for tea.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 November 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

While you can make your own B-side compilation the way you want it, growing your own tea and then making a decent cuppa with it is a challenge. I'll go with the Earl Grey, myself.

Sadly, I think I only have English Breakfast in the house. Oh well.

MC Stylised Vadge (edwardo), Thursday, 17 November 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

This question is a conundrum, to me. I dont like earl grey tea at all. But b side compilations, hmmm. Are there any good ones? That Wedding Present one was a bit naff.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 November 2005 04:11 (twenty years ago)

i'll have the tea, to bide my time until the great new album comes out.

oh ilx my lionheart (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 17 November 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

i keep earl grey tealeaves as a sort of special treat for myself, not for just having at breakfast run-of-the-mill tea (like english breakfast), i only have it on weekends when i'm reading the paper all day or having a very rare midweek day off. i'm not sure why i think earl grey tea is some sort of special indulgence.

The Black Box Recorder B-Sides compilation is fantastic! Like, vastly and incomparably better than any one album of theirs, and probably better than an all-A-sides greatest hits.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 17 November 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

Tea I can take or leave.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 17 November 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

But if you leave it, it will get cold! :(

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 17 November 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

not kidding by the way, "Afternoon Tea Music" is a great comp series of bossa nova, sunshine pop, lounge, twee psych, sailing music etc but I don't know if anyone on earth has them in other than mp3 form

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 17 November 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

earl grey tea tastes like dishwater. may I suggest the pet shop boys' alternative?

etc, Thursday, 17 November 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

You damned Kiwi, what do you know of tea?

Oh, OK. Alternative is better than Earl Grey, this I will concede. But we established on ILM that PSB are generally better than everything else in the world ever, EVEN the king of hot beverages.

MC Stylised Vadge (edwardo), Thursday, 17 November 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

Well I think even Neil Tennant would dispute that.
