...with the online wing of a massive music channel's news department.

Your advice and best wishes are enouraged!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

EnCouraged, even.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

enraged?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 17 November 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

That'll come later, invariably.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Good Luck to you!

Rumpie, Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Thanky, Rumpie.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, MASSIVE GOOD LUCK VIBES are sent your way!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

GOOD LUCK
AND SNUGGLES

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

Try not to pistol whip your interviewer.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Keep in mind that said music channel probably wants nothing to do with your favorite bands.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Try not to pistol whip your interviewer.

I can't make any promises.

Keep in mind that said music channel probably wants nothing to do with your favorite bands.

My favorite bands and the merit-extolling of same don't really enter into the equation, really.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Another question, and one that will invariably invite abject smart-assery, but what should I wear? At the moment: black jeans, black doc marten wingtips, white oxford, dark blue sweater-vest thingy (not a cardigan), dark brown jacket.

Ridicule away, but advice welcomed....and please make haste, my sit-down is at 11am.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

(not a cardigan)

Cobain wore cardigans, I can see why you're making the distinction.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but they'd have hired him.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

When in town, don't wear brown

I'm not sure I would wear black and brown together anyway. Also, I think brown and blue only work together if the blue is pale enough.

Have you got anything in the way of suit jackets knocking round? The right one (pinstripe if you have it) will probably work.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Just look comfortable in whatever you're wearing. I can usually tell when people are dressed differently than usual, since something is always a little off and awkward, and too much of their regular dress habits slip through and negate any primping. Of course, there's nothing wrong with making an effort to look sharp, but if it looks like too much of an effort they'll no doubt wonder what you're like the other 364 days of the year.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Have you got anything in the way of suit jackets knocking round? The right one (pinstripe if you have it) will probably work.

I do, actually (pinstripe). I'll give that a try. Cheers, Aldo.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

When in town, don't wear brown

Is this a credible fashion maxim or some Dr.Seuss couplet? Seriously, is brown bad? I have a really nice dark brown blazer.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

If you haven't already surmised, I'm fashionably challenged (and with the wife at work, I have no one to bounce ideas off of).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Victorian (Edwardian?) maxim for the difference between suitable city and country wear.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 17 November 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

cobain is a good thing.

g-clit (g-kit), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. Good to know. I tried the pinstripe jacket, and it looked a bit odd. I think the sweater-vest thing is the problem. Argh! What to do. Time is running out.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

"Why Alex, with that cardigan you remind me of Kurt"
"Don't start me on that fucker!" {vigorous pistol whipping}

Might be a bad idea...

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

xpost

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Nix the pinstripe

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 17 November 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

oh ilx my lionheart (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 17 November 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Just don't do your make-up during the interview. That's both for you and Alex. ;-)
But seriously, good luck to both of you!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 17 November 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Fingers crossed, gramps!

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 17 November 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, all! It actually went disarmingly well (though I was asked what my favorite music word. Fire was honored, albeit in a professional fashion.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

What my favorite music was, not word. Word!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

What is your favorite music word? "Seminal"? "Relentless"?

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Thursday, 17 November 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

"pablum" and "pabulum".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Good citizen of ILX: I need your positive vibes, white voodoo and wish-fulfilling psychic energy. I SO want -- nay, NEED -- this job. If it doesn't come through, I am going to be profoundly depressed. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Alex, the goats = thrown!!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

got a call the same afternoon and had my first day, today

RJG (RJG), Monday, 21 November 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

Well done, RJG. Good luck, ever-growing bunch of jobhunting NYCers.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 21 November 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

AAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!

I have a follow-up interview this coming Tuesday (this after meeting with the H.R. recruiter, which went well, but not as well as I'd have liked). Situation at current job, meanwhile, is at an ALL TIME LOW (today almost brought me tears and fisticuffs), making me hunger for this potential new job like nobody's business. I'm not an especially spiritual person, but if you are....PLEASE pray to the most beneficent and understanding deity of your choice that this job comes through.

I will be indescribably bummed if it does not.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 28 November 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

Best of luck Alex! :)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 28 November 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, Trayce!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 28 November 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

i hope you get this job alex.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 28 November 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

it sounds like the kind of job where you'd get paid to read ilm.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 28 November 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

call-back interviews almost always = a VERY good sign.

best of luck, alex!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 28 November 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

I feel ya alex, I wanted a job I went for SO badly earlier this year, then I thought I pretty much screwed up the interview and was so disappointed with myself. but then I got it anyway! so, uh, I have no useful advice to impart (except maybe don't get too worked up about the interview) but good luck!

turboalbino (haitch), Monday, 28 November 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

Tad is right, it is a good sign.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 28 November 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

Good luck!

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Monday, 28 November 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, all....

Second interview in an hour and a half. EEEEEK Musn't fuck this up!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Go Alex!!!

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Relax, dude, it will go well.

Dan (Don't Kill Anyone And The Job Is Probably Yours) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Good luck Alex, though you may have to work on Ashlee Simpson content and stuff like that.

Lars and Jagger (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Nah, I know....I'm cool with that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Good luck, Alex! They will be very lucky to land you, if they do.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Oooh I was just wondering how this was going...go get 'em!

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

jbr update: it's between me and one other person now. should know real soon.

surf punks from arizona (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

fingers crossed for both of you.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

Jody, want us to have a little chat w/ the other candidate? Real friendly-like?

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

Well, it seemed to go well, but it's just so damn hard to tell with these things. I believe I was a bit more nervous this time, but I was in there for an hour and a half. It ended with a "we'll be in touch" sorta vibe. I'm really not sure how to read it. I came home and fired off the obligatory "thank you" follow-up e-mail.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

hang in there alex, i've been here 8 years and need a new job badly...just need to get off my ass and do after one.
