C/D - Marching Bands

I don't know if this is a local thing or if it occurs elsewhere - hence the thread...

Does the marching band from your college (or any other place that has a band) have cult status? Peole go wild for the fucking marching band here. They have come to my employer today to play in the atrium for us. Everyone is gathered out there to hear a good old fashioned band concert. What a bunch of sacks. Jesus H. Christ.

Some fuxors keep opening the doors, so the sound is coming in here.

Marching bands have a whole other connotation here in freezing Scotland.

Good old Swells. Bear with him at the start, he gets round to marching bands eventually.

I unabashedly love marching bands. In high school I was on the flag team, having no musical skills to speak of, and in retrospect I can admit that it was really fun. At the time, though, I was kicked off the team for "excessive scowling." Oh well.

OK, that reminds me of the classic Pete & Pete episode "Dayo fothe Dot" where the band plays "Love Rollercoaster" ... But other than that, um, get back to work.

Day of the Dot, that is. Dayo fothe Dot was a .. guy .. I .. knew from .. a .. play I saw .. in German .. or Italy .. or Spain or something.

True confession I've kept mostly hidden for several years due to my association with a couple ex-marchers: I FUCKING HATE MARCHING BANDS.

I'm just the opposite -- I was sheepish about my love for them until recently, when I came clean and admitted that I LOVE MARCHING BANDS.

I went to see Forest scrape out a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth last Saturday, and about five minutes before kick-off a full-on US-style marching band appeared from behind the East Stand, marched along one side of the goal playing "Here we go," then plonked themselves down in a stand and spent the whole game banging out football chants every time things got a bit quiet.

Shat all over the Sheffield Wednesday trumpet twonks.

What's not to love?

Oh god oh god I LOVE marching bands. The Panamanian Day Parade went past my building on a rainy wkend a while back, and I stood and clapped like a maniac for the drum & bugle line-ups. I may have also shed a tear, they were so proud and I was so proud for them!

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 18 November 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I should add that I'm a HS band veteran and a trumpet player and marching season is good to the horn line (and the drum line). Not so much fun for the clairnets.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 18 November 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Lots of marching bands and marching band geeks = corny. It gets annoying when everyone asks me and my bandmates if we were in the marching band.

DCI-level drum corps = technically amazing, but it's gotten to a really weird "what's the point, again?" place.

Southern marching bands in parades where 14 yr old kids are blowing high F's and it's a party = awesome.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 November 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

I think you meant "horny" not "corny."

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 18 November 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I haven't seen any DCI in a while even though the thought pops up now and then. How has it gotten weird, Jordan?

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 18 November 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

I guess "gotten" is the wrong word, but just the whole idea elevating the half-time marching band show concept to this insular, incredibly precise craft is a little weird to me. I do like watching some of it on tv during Thanksgiving, though.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 November 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I was in marching band in high school. We were not cool.
I was in a local marching band for awhile a few years ago just for kicks. All those band fags who weren't cool in high school became even less cool as adults.

TS: Marching Bands vs. A Cappella Groups

elmo (allocryptic), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Oh god, I love them both. Swingle Singers vs. Phanton Regiment.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Marching band + John Phillips Sousa + 4th of July parade is a total classic. Precision performance, DCI like, is amazing! Half-time shows with band members forming outline images of locomotives and space rockets and 10-gallon hats while the flag and rifle corps do their thing - YES YES YES!!!

But then, like Laurel, I marched for 7 years (mellophone - was I ever in shape in those days!). Also, a cappella groups/madrigal dinners, another YES!

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh jesus, s/b "Phantom" obv.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

oh jesus. i forgot all about DCI! mid-late 80s, that was the shit! i recall going to marching competition and people would whisper things about the rivals like "i heard their first chair trumpet totally made DCI this summer. we're in trouble."

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

oh nigger, I used to watch DCI videos all the time back when I was younger. They were hot!

Mitch V., Friday, 18 November 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

My brother was in Phantom.
I chose not to do the whole DCI/WGI thing. After MBA (or, er, sorry, showing my age: BOA) I decided to pursue Other Things. And I undoubtely wasn't good enough to be in a guard, unless it was one that lost all the time no matter how hard they worked and you know, I did that in high school. (Although our winter guard kicked some mighty ass.)
