We all knew this, but someone felt a need to write about it.

ILX folk can't punctuate.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

Non registered persons cant read.

Tweed as F*ck (kate), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Most IT jobs have you crawling around under desks, running cables, munging around in closets and opening PC cases. I would not dress nice for this.

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

This dude doesnt give a shit.

Spink, Friday, 18 November 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

bugmenot suggests:

login: blobblob
pwd: blobblob

which works for me.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

There's a difference between dressing "nice" and being able to coordinate yourself or have any sense of fashion in any way though, is I think the point they're making.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

as someone who is lurking on the "what do you look like" thread in a shirt with rolled-up sleeves - in fact, as someone who got up on stage in front of 400 designers wearing a shirt with rolled-up sleeves - i am in no position to comment.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Strange, it asked me to log in at first, but then when I went back there with the BugMeNot user/pass, it didn't ask me.

Anyway, this is another 'corporate suit bitter that they have to wear a suit' rant about how IT people are throwing away opportunities because of the image they present... thing is, most IT people couldn't care less.

Tell it to the holes in my jeans, baby.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

my girlfriend works in IT, and i like it when she's not dressed. so this works out quite well.

g-clit (g-kit), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Switch to MI. No more digging around under desks and everyone dresses like accountants.

Wait, actually, I'm not sure that's any better. It's more formal and I suppose the kind of "nice" that article is after, though.

Tweed as F*ck (kate), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Short/rolled up sleeves are bad? Fuck that, I live in Texas. Hell, during the summer, I think men should be permitted to go to work in sarongs.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

how hard is it to coordinate really? i think this is some willful "nerd underground" thing.

strongo hulkington's ghost (dubplatestyle), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

"you know what would really fuck those hipsters up? tapered leg pale blue wranglers with all white sneakers from payless."

strongo hulkington's ghost (dubplatestyle), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

maybe you're overlooking the fact that they really don't give a shit what hipsters think about their work clothes.

g-clit (g-kit), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

i do admit my deathly seriousness over this topic may have been misplaced.

strongo hulkington's ghost (dubplatestyle), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

i'm an IT folk and i can dress! and coordinate my clothes!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

So you think.

Spink, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Hey now my MS program is in ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT with a CONCENTRATION in INFORMATION SECURITY. I almost took offense to your comment but I just wanted to point out that I don't have to, because it's DIFFERENT.

TOMBOT, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

There is a guy here at work that wears this t-shirt 2-3 days a week. He also "thinks" its the greatest thing on earth.

Haha Jon you've been reading the slashdot article

teeny (teeny), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

rofffz! Is that actually him?

Tom, I was mostly refering to the people who go to a 4 year undergrad program for IT monkey positions.

xxxpost

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

No, thats not him, but close!

A friend of mine went to RIT and majored in IT something...2 years later he's in Houston going to culinary school. Never found a job.

Spink, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Hahhahahaha! I was refering to people at RIT. My ex did that but is going to grad school for bioinformatics.

xpost. I am indeed pwned for reading slashdot.

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

I dont understand how a school like RIT does that. Of all the things they offer there in the sciences, they are doing that?@!

One should never study *IT*. Studying IT is what you do when you find yourself in an IT possition with no way out...about 4 years into the job.

Spink, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

But what do you wear whilst reading slashdot? xpost

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Actually that sounds kinda creepy.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

jess is relentlessly OTM as usual

(I don't remember ever buying this)

That's because I bought it. For you. Which is part of the reason why you're much better dressed recently, Mr. Hawaiian Shirt Too Big Khakis Wearing Dude.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

I am wearing:

Orange+White Adidases
Turquoise T shirt
Black thermal shirt
Black Gap jeans.
SmartWool socks

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

You are pretty fashion.

Really I do not think this article is necessarily true, at least not more so than the concept that MOST people, IT or not, dress like complete schlubs.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Yea, and the guy at the bodega dresses schleppy also!

(nicked from /.)

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I mean let's be honest here, that IT is kind of being unfairly singled out. I mean for god's sake at least 2 million people in this country own "NEVER FORGET 9/11" xxlarge t-shirts with a giant airbrushed eagle and a flag on them that they bought at Walmart. Probably more than 2 million! However, yeah, white sneakers and tapered wranglers, wtf.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

I quickly glanced around my office, most people look OK dressed to me. The guy with the dodgy shirts isn't in today though.

The article seems to suggest wearing short-sleeved shirts or t-shirts = bad dress sense, and that people should instead be wearing smart shirts and slacks. I think I'd prefer to be considered unfashionable.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I look like shit. And I barely know HTML.

TOMBOT, Friday, 18 November 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

IT people here at my job seem to dress OK, there is one guy who wears jeans and t-shirts all the time & I am waiting for him to wear pajamas to work one casual Friday (this would be awesome).

Currently wearing bootcut jeans + black boots + fuzzy ivory cable knit sweater + when outside, fantastic vintage plaid top coat in grey & camel. Will not order any t-shirts from thinkgeek any time soon no matter how tempted I am to put up a "NO I WONT/CANT FIX YR COMPUTER" notice..

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

It's bad to put up notices? I put up notices all the time on the back of my monitor that say things like, "IF YOU COME BEHIND MY DESK WITHOUT BEING INVITED I WILL SHOOT YOU WITH COMPRESSED AIR." It works great.

Also everyone in our IT department (including me) dresses like crap except for the intern. I usually wear khakis and some generic top. I don't want people to start lusting after me. It'd cause problems because it would never be reciprocated and stuff. I'm sure most IT people have similar reasons for dressing like bums.

Rebekkah (burntbrat), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

fleece zip mock = SO IT

OHH YEAH

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

I work in helpdesk, and I am poorly dressed. Actually, I'm the best dressed in my dept, which is sad.

Jeff-Beetle (Jeff), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

i don't like how i dress for work but i don't care enough to overhaul that part of my wardrobe. luckily nobody that i work with dresses that well either.

sleep (sleep), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

I was reading that article and thinking that the coders on my floor don't look so unusual. Then the cavefish from down in desktop systems came by to adjust my, um, "monument".

Junior DS guy: Pale-blue denim-colored slacks; tan t-shirt with Cabo Wabo logo; baby-bird buzzcut; penny loafers; complicated watch.

Senior DS guy: Baggy white Hilfiger jeans w/logo on hammer loop; purple acid-washed denim long-sleeved short-tailed shirt, worn untucked for side-belly peekaboo effect; white British Knights; Larry King specs; conspiracy theories.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

What the hell? I work in IT and we have a fairly strict dress code. Though I did used to work in a similar set-up where the sys admin wore that "I read your e-mail" t-shirt at least three times a week and didn't take showers. Ever. But as someone said upthread, if I'm going to spend all day on my back sorting through cables and collecting dustbunnies and working in one of the most unhygenic situations possible short of being an elephant shit shoveler, I don't think it's that unreasonable to wear whatever I want.

ng-unit, Friday, 18 November 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

do they still make British Knights?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Jeff, I want to reiterate that you looked SNAPPY when we met for drinks after work last week.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

of the it people i can even remember at work, the guy is fairly generically dressed... nothing too dorky... usually just your standard corporate khaki and polo comos. the woman, however, wears terrible clothes... is not hot... and sucks at her job.

we do have some software development going on in the conference room near my desk, and there are some pretty well-dressed cuties in there, but i think they are contracted and not actually employees of my company, and won't be here anymore as soon as new software is launched/fixed/integrated/whatever.

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

GET OFF MY PROGRAMMING DICK PLZ

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

standard corporate khaki and polo comos
I assume comos = combos or common homos.. but at first I read comos as the name for people in comas.. ie office drones.

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

haha... yeah it was combos...
