Explain BitTorrent

Ok, I've just downloaded it on OSX. A window comes up when I click on it that does not respond to anything - I can't even shut it down without quitting.

ALSO - I can't even remove the icon from the desktop - if I drag the icon to the trash, the trash turns into the eject symbol, like it was a CD, and it says "BitTorrent is in use and cannot be ejected".

I'm very confused.

sounds like you've gotten yourself in a world of trouble!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 19 November 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

Have you tried starting a torrent?

You might also try other clients: Tomato, Azureus, or Bits on Wheels.

It also sounds like you're actually trying to get rid of the image, rather than the app itself. Dig you drag the app to your application folder? Try launching it from there and see how you go.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Saturday, 19 November 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

Still can't figure out how to use it. Starting a torrent? What is this? I thought It was just something I could get free films from, I didn't realise I had to do anything.

Anyway, i'm off to bed now, sure it will seem much simpler in the morning.

we did all we could.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 19 November 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

Um.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Saturday, 19 November 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

Sorry to sound ungrateful. Thank you very much!

Really, I'm pretty drunk, I shouldn't try and install software in this state.

chap who would dare to tell uninteresting celeb spotting stories (chap), Saturday, 19 November 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

Or indeed post or do anything.

I use Bit Torrent software for OS X I downloaded from Versiontracker.com. I have (version) BitTorrent 3.2.2, but I see there's a beta version of 4.1.8 currently on versiontracker.

Download and install that - pretty easy as I recall. Then go to your favorite Torrent/sharing site and dl the particular torrent you seek. Drag that torrent over your BitTorrent software to launch. Choose a folder to direct those files towards, and let it go. It will take a moment to link to other clients and then the dl begins. Depending on your connections, modem speed, firewalls and the size of the files your dl'ing, it could take hours - or days to dl the entire file.

But that's not all! If it's music, you will probably end up with a bunch of .shn or .flac files. You still need to decode these. Go back to versiontracker.com and dl free software to expand either the .shn files and/or the .flac files. You drag and drop the .shn's or .flac's to this software, direct the new files to a particular folder, and choose the extensions of the decoded files - say, .aiff or .wav files.

And you're set. If you dl movies, you probably get a Video_TS folder. This requires no decoding on the Mac, and can be viewed through the DVD software and/or burned to a DVD.

But there's more! You cannot stop your download, and expect to have usable files. You need to get the entire (100%) of the dl, to have files that ares useful to you. You can pause the dl (even quit) and begin it again later; be sure when you restart to direct towards your original folder. It will ascertain what you already have dl'd, and pick it up from there.

And that's not all! Other people are exchanging data with you, so be a good sharer and try to upload as much, if not more, than you have dl'd (in bit size). That way you perpetuate the sharing, and spread the goodness.

Starting your own torrent (originating an upload) is another affair. Torrent sites would have the instrux for that.

That's the basics, and once you have it down, it's pretty easy. Then buy an external drive to store all the goodies.

drewo (drewo), Saturday, 19 November 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Ok, I think I'm getting the hang of it now. A lot easier when you're sober!

chap who would dare to tell uninteresting celeb spotting stories (chap), Saturday, 19 November 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

funny that

kingfish hobo juckie (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 19 November 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I know, who'd have thought.

chap who would dare to tell uninteresting celeb spotting stories (chap), Saturday, 19 November 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

So I managed to get a membership on a restricted torrent site (Demonoid), but I've found that I usually get better results just using open sites like Torrentz or Torrentspy. And on those sites, I don't have to maintain a ratio or anything. Really, I've got a lot of good stuff to offer, but why should I trade it for crap?

viborgu, Saturday, 19 November 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

I can generally pick up any tv show I've missed on mininova.org. The only one I've ever failed utterly to get was the Wire season 3, but that's mostly because I got there very late (I wasn't trying to get it for myself, but for a friend I'd hooked via the season 1 and 2 dvds) and also it's a giant fucking download - 4.3 gigs or something like that.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 19 November 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

i would kill for the wire season 3 right now

W i l l (common_person), Saturday, 19 November 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

the latest version of acquisition for os x has torrent support. i've not tried it yet, though.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 20 November 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone tried iSwipe's torrent support? I was a fan years ago, but the damn thing just doesn't work now. What do people think of Cabos, the Limewire alternative? Seems a like a lean and pretty efficient app.

What OSX apps do people prefer? Azureus used to work like a charm as did Bits on Wheels, but since I signed up here in NZ for broadband, the original Bit Torrent works best.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Monday, 21 November 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

I was using Transmission for awhile (and still keep it handy) but now I'm finding the latest v1.0.6 of Bits On Wheels to be superior. Your mileage may vary etc...

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

what's the advantage of using torrents over emu1e p2p type systems?

Baaderonixx ménage ses forces dans l'attente du Grand Soir (baaderonixx), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

More robust, cause you're more likely to be getting bits from loads of people at once? Better speeds, in my experience. Better quality control (esp. with subscription sites).

I use Azureus for OS X and it works great, though it hogs RAM quite a lot.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

the latest version of acquisition for os x has torrent support. i've not tried it yet, though.

I haven't got it to work at all for me, and it sucks because it automatically became my default torrent app as soon as I upgraded. If you use Acquisition and also a different torrent client, I would suggest not upgrading to the new version if you haven't done so yet!

viborgu, Monday, 21 November 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
wow this is a bit rubbish isn't it really?

i downloaded bt yesterday and have managed to get only one of the files working properly.
So I put it down to the fact I was using a free site to search for my torrents. i signed up for supernova er, but, they just tell you to download the BT application and THATS IT! hey where are my fucking torrents ?!

i have better luck just searching google for anything i need. thnx.

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 12 March 2006 17:25 (twenty years ago)

if you're on windows you might try using this

mookieproof (mookieproof), Sunday, 12 March 2006 17:35 (twenty years ago)

seriously though have i just been ripped off? all that the supernova site features is links to other websites !?

if i click on the technical support link it just takes me to a gambling website

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 12 March 2006 17:38 (twenty years ago)

You got ripped off.

svend (svend), Sunday, 12 March 2006 17:51 (twenty years ago)

so i just had to cancel my visa card, phew!

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 12 March 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

google is your friend

Mitya (mitya), Sunday, 12 March 2006 17:55 (twenty years ago)

You paid for illegal downloads? That wasn't so bright, really. Even if you weren't getting ripped off, you'd be giving your real life identity to a company selling illegal stuff.

Get Azureus. Go to www.thepiratebay.org or www.mininova.org. Read a couple of wikipedia pages about seeds and peers and ratios (it's really not that hard to get used to). And don't give you credit card details out to anyone else.

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 12 March 2006 17:59 (twenty years ago)

yeah. don't pay for torrents!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111

just google for trackers. i found this amazing music related one but it's invites only and i don't have any invites

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 12 March 2006 18:00 (twenty years ago)

supernova hasn't existed for years. whatever you "signed up for" is the scammy thing that replaced it.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 12 March 2006 18:03 (twenty years ago)

it's a minefield out here kids!

seriously, I'll stick to being legal and buying my CD's or paying 99p from bleep.com. at least amazon and bleep actually produce results from my searches.

but it's invites only
so how the eff do you get on there in the first place to invite someone?!

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 12 March 2006 18:14 (twenty years ago)

you have to have been there long enough to be a POWER USER. or donate money.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 12 March 2006 20:50 (twenty years ago)

my friend sent me an invite

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 12 March 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

can anyone explain this situation for me? i've read how bt prioritizes how data gets sent from seeders based on who is asking for what pieces, etc. i think i get that. BUT i routinely get into situations where i'm swarmed with 4 or 7 or 12 seeders and none of them are u/ling me anything! what do i have to do?

also, anyone recommend a client for osx 10.3? i think azureus needs the lastest v. of java which is for 10.4. right?

geoff (gcannon), Thursday, 23 March 2006 02:25 (nineteen years ago)

and none of them are u/ling me anything!
they will only upload to the top X people uploading to them; limit your number of uploads

Azureus is awful. Use Bits on Wheels

R.I.P. West Village Bird Shaman ]-`: (ex machina), Thursday, 23 March 2006 05:39 (nineteen years ago)

I use Transmission, it's small and simple, and almost never gets stuck. Look for it on versiontracker, it should work with 10.3.

Jena (JenaP), Thursday, 23 March 2006 07:45 (nineteen years ago)

I use Azureus and I'm on 10.3, geoff. I think it uses Java 1.4.
