Not being allowed to drink caffeine or alcohol under doctor's orders -- C/D

I was recently diagnosed with a (non-lethal) stomach complaint, and my doctor recommended not to drink caffeine or alcohol for 3-4 months until it subsides. Just water. Lots. Of. Water.

So, is this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience from the sober end of a glass, or just a royal pain in the tuchus?

I often feel less caffeine is better, but then it seems like conflicting evidence mounts! Hein! WHo can say! ANyways if you love your coffee, this will be a hard time for you. Perhaps you should get a second opinion, or see about getting intra-venious caffeine.

I've definitely been feeling more awake and alert the past few days, but that could be just from more early nights and not having fun

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Saturday, 19 November 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

not having fun is a good way to be alert becuase your body craves fun and if you dont have it your body will make you seek it out.

yeah, soon you'll be hooked on sex and pot. I mean, exercise and decaf green tea.

I've gone off caffeine in the past two months or so because of my Crohn's disease. I just think about how much my stomach would hurt otherwise and it's no problem. Never done booze though, so I dunno about that.

Doctors are such killjoys. They think nothing of denying us our pleasures. It's not THEM after all, that will be missing out on all the fun. I'm surprised they didn't forbid fat and salt, too. How could they resist inflicting a diet of TASTELESS FOOD on you?
Do some research. Maybe all you need are massive daily doses of Pepto-Bismol.

I was relieved that quitting alcohol for pregnancy was as easy as it was for me, because I really like me my bouze. Although if it was something less important than a baby, I might not have done so well. :/

If you're comfortable with your doctor and the diagnosis, go for it and get your teeth whitened at the same time.

My doctor told me not to drink alcohol or caffeine because I have mono :( I don't drink coffee so at least I can handle THAT. BUT YESTERDAY I WOULD HAVE KILLED FOR A BEER, MAYBE.

I'm thinking of doing two weeks sans booze-and-caffeine after Thanksgiving. I try to do something like that once a year, just to recalibrate the nervous system. The first week I'm always surprised how good I feel. The second week, I start thinking, "I feel good, but I'd feel better with a cup of coffee/glass of wine/margarita."

If you have an ulcer, it has been recently discovered that ulcers are due to bacteria, and antibiotics, not what you eat, will cure them. I heard it on NPR FWIW

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 21 November 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

that is true, but it was discovered in the 1980s - i suppose that is recent in a way. two scientists from my uni received the nobel prize for the discovery this year:

Ulcers are caused by bacteria, but they're still open sores in your stomach! Eating certain foods can definitely cause irritation.

I cannot do the caffeine or the alcohol or the smoke. I do the smoke anyway.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 25 November 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

No alcohol, doctor's orders. I don't drink much, but for some reason my liver is giving me jokes, and until they figure it out I can't drink : (

And I'm arriving in Munich next week. Has anyone ever had N/A beer that doesn't taste awful?

caek, Friday, 25 September 2009 14:16 (sixteen years ago)

You do know it's still Oktoberfest in Munich right? :(

yeah, i had timed my arrival at my new job for the last week of the fest so i could catch that, but the medical for the job threw up this weird enzyme thing.

we've ruled out anything serious, but i do have to have an ultrasound. if it turns out i'm pregnant i'm going to be very disappointed.

caek, Friday, 25 September 2009 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

how is that erdinger? all the low/no-alcohol beer i've had in the UK tastes of stale urine, vegetable stock, packing materials, etc.

caek, Friday, 25 September 2009 14:41 (sixteen years ago)

i gave up tea/coffee/coke cola about 6 years ago.
3 days of hell (cold sweats, severe headaches, stomach cramps), followed by years of an uneasy calm.

mark e, Friday, 25 September 2009 14:42 (sixteen years ago)

xpost: It sucks. But it sucks less than most. I think that is as good as yr going to get in terms of n/a beer.

Andrew "Nice" Clay (Pillbox), Friday, 25 September 2009 14:49 (sixteen years ago)

Ha, non alcoholic erdinger! My bf drinks Erd by the pintload... I bet he'd not go for that stuff tho. Is there at all such a thing as a good non alcoholic beer?

Dearth Disco (Trayce), Saturday, 26 September 2009 03:24 (sixteen years ago)

n/a Erdinger is really surprisingly good by the way! i haven't had a beer for a couple of months, so i can't say i've got fresh memories of a really good one to compare it to, but this will do me for now. thanks for the tip!
