I always find that the movies everyone says ar ebad are the ones I love the most, like PLan 9 From OUter Space and Dolomite. But here are some exceptions that I just don't see how anyone could enjoy.
Titanic
Battlefeild Earth
Diary of Bridget Jones
The Red Violin
Swing Kids

Mike Hanle y 3000 (hanle y 3000), Sunday, 20 November 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

i enjoy 2 of those

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 20 November 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

ew, titanic. i'm a sucker for a good shipwreck story but this one was just irredeemable. couldn't even enjoy it ironically.

mimi in st. louis (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 20 November 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

tres letraj (tehresa), Sunday, 20 November 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

bad movie i love - love story!

mimi in st. louis (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 20 November 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

loving love story means never having to say you're sorry.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 20 November 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

another movie i experienced first in its mad magazine parody form.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 20 November 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

who's apologizing?

mimi in st. louis (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 20 November 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

A Boy and His Dog - I'd never heard of it before ILX but it was well worth my $20. Don Johnson's finest moment.

Was Cruel Intentions a bad movie?

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Sunday, 20 November 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

my all-time favorite basic cable staple: Finding Forrester. I would seriously take it over any other Van Sant movie I've seen. The Henry IV scenes in My Own Private Idaho were good, but they've got nothing on an agoraphobic Scottish drunk and his Lebron James-esque literary protege.

Escape from New York

Rotgutt (Rotgutt), Sunday, 20 November 2005 06:46 (twenty years ago)

finding forrester would be excellent if not for those couple of (deservedly) infamous lines connery blurts out. there's a lot about the movie i admire. through van sant's eyes, the bronx looks like the more woodsy parts of the pacific northwest!

mimi in st. louis (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 20 November 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

the plagiarism subplot is pretty corny too, i'll admit.

mimi in st. louis (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 20 November 2005 06:50 (twenty years ago)

It took me a minute to figure out what lines you're referring to. I was thinking it was something more controversial that I had forgotten about (like slipping in the n-word).

My favourite bad/good movies are pretty much tied to movies shown on tv, late at night or at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon:
Wild Things
Showgirls
Clue
Gotcha!
D.A.R.Y.L.
okay, there are 49549 more.
(and wow! I just turned on the tv and the very end of Titanic was on! And now there's an infomercial about a ladder. 21 ladders in one! I still wish Demolition Man or Total Recall or something was on.)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Sunday, 20 November 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

Of course Showgirls is disqualified becuase it features enough skin/breast showing to render any man too horny to judge movie quality.

Mike Hanle y 3000 (hanle y 3000), Sunday, 20 November 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

All of Verhoeven's movies are awesome, part of his schtick is using style as satire, thinking of Showgirls as a bad movie is missing its point.

The whole bad movie idea is a bit of a non-starter really. Really bad movies are usually the pompous Oscar-bait middlebrow shite with a Message. I love all the Police Academy films and pretty much anything with Chevy Chase in it, if that counts. And most of the Carry On and Confessions films, too.

THIS IS THE SOUND OF ALTERN 8 !!! (noodle vague), Sunday, 20 November 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

haha will anyone admit to liking forrest gump?

the owners of the bubba gump shrimp company?

Starship Troopers
Armageddon
Swimfan

They are bad movies, but I'm sure loads of people love them.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 20 November 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

In starship troopers the male and female combatants shower in the same shower. I guess its supposed to impress us with its lack of prudery in the future but I highly doubt this will ever take place, even in the year 3000. But then again, if giant bugs can be defeated, surely the errant boner can be too!

Mike Hanle y 3000 (hanle y 3000), Sunday, 20 November 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

ARE YOU DELIBERATELY MISUNDERSTANDING STARSHIP TROOPERS TO PERSONALLY ANNOY ME OR WHAT??!?!?! IT IS NOT A "BAD" MOVIE IN ANY MEANINGFUL WAY!!?!?!?%

They shower together because their society is based on a Spartan ethic, it's a specific political reference. Also because Dina Meyer is the hottest woman in the universe.

THIS IS THE SOUND OF ALTERN 8 !!! (noodle vague), Sunday, 20 November 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

Bridget Jones's Diary is a nice romantic comedy, there's nothing particularly bad about it. It certainly improves upon the book.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 20 November 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

As for truly bad movies, my favourite is probably Jingle All the Way.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 20 November 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Especially with it's more literate Finnish title, "My Father is the Turboman".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 20 November 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Though it can't really really compete with the best Finnish title for an American movie ever, "Hormone Mice in Bikini Paradise". (I have no idea what the original title is.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 20 November 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

Warriors

Wargames

I didn't put Starship Troopers down b/c, yes, it's fucking great and Action Packed. Showgirls, while great is also pretty great (perhaps too great) at being a "bad" movie and, (maybe b/c I'm a girl?), I find it less Action Packed and fun to watch than ST. Oh, these silly fine lines...

The Shining is good, wtf.
Tuomas moves in the right direction with Jingle All the Way, but it's almost too bad. Twins and Kindergarten Cop are the Arnie comedies I want to watch as I fall asleep on the couch at 3am. Truly bad are the sequels to Lethal Weapon and Die Hard, yet they suck me in. Innerspace is also classically bad and incredibly watchable.

Star Crash - A late seventies italian knockoff of Star Wars with a fist shaped spaceship that curls into a fist for battle, a robot with a redneck southern accent (predating the one in The Black Hole, I believe), and David Hasselhoff.

"I am the Emperor, and am not completely without power...CEASE THE FLOW OF TIME!"

I believe a DVD release is available.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 20 November 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Whoa whoa whoa wait: The Warriors? "Bad movie"?!

disco violence (disco violence), Sunday, 20 November 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Holy Crap! I remember StarCrash!

I'd add to that, in a similar vein, Ice Pirates and Space Hunter (adventures in the forbidden zone)

mzui (mzui), Sunday, 20 November 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

I seem to remember that "Battle Beyond the Stars" was a pretty quality shit Star Wars knockoff, too. There's really nothing quite like low-budget retreads of big budget trash, is there?

Hey, remember all those sea monster movies that hit after "The Abyss"? I think one of them was called "Deep Star Six" or something.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 20 November 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't Battle Beyond the Stars a Magnificent Seven rip? It's even got Robert Vaughan in it, if I'm thinking about the right film.

Yeah, Mike, I think the communal uniex shower is always present in sci-fi things. I remember one episode of Enterprise, where they had a communal shower which featured the Vulcan lady, and they used some sort of oil instead of water. This scene has stuck in my mind for some reason.

i'm a huge fan of the book as well, the movie i like but it's kind of...i'm not sure it really quite works as a movie. maybe i shouldnt't have said 'bad' movie. it does have one of Christopher Walken's signature performances. and him high-fiving an alien. and anal probes.
fuck...it's the best movie ever! what the hell was i thinking?

latebloomer: Do I have a large frog in my hair? (latebloomer), Monday, 21 November 2005 03:33 (twenty years ago)

Most good-bad movies lean heavily on the over-the-top exemption.

Aimless (Aimless), Monday, 21 November 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

THE ISLAND. Seriously, what's not to like? Sean Bean in the Sean Bean role, Steve Buscemi in the Steve Buscemi role, Ewan McGregor speaking in his actual accent, Djimon Houson in token good black guy role, and shots of people running for about two-thirds of the movie.

Roz (Roz), Monday, 21 November 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

....dude. No mention of Scarlett Johansson, wtf?

Seconded: Battlefield Earth. Glorious. On pot: the end of the world. In a good way.

when people say this I just want to strap their ass in a chair and make them watch The Hollow Man 8 times in a row.

'Twan (miccio), Monday, 21 November 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

i mean, yeah, doogie in SS yadda yadda, but what a wonderful place it must be for a director when every "bad" thing you do is going to be taken for granted as intentional.

'Twan (miccio), Monday, 21 November 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

And the video edit of Battlefield Earth isn't quite as good as the one showed in theatres (I saw it twice). There's even more Travolta nonsense originally.

'Twan (miccio), Monday, 21 November 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

R.O.T.O.R.

There's also a great Indonesian (I think) Rambo rip-off called the Intruder, about a guy who has to save the town from a Mr Big style crime-lord. The hero is called Rambu.

Mestema (davidcorp), Monday, 21 November 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I shouldn't've brought intentionality into it with Verhoeven. What I should've said was: even his bad movies are fucking great.

THIS IS THE SOUND OF ALTERN 8 !!! (noodle vague), Monday, 21 November 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

Predator's too well-executed to be a bad movie! Predator 2, on the other hand, now that's an enjoyable bad movie!

Oh, and re: Verhoeven: using words like "bad" and "good" is meaningless since they are so inextricably intertwined in his films. The man is in a category by himself.

The major EXCEPTION being Hollow Man, which is just a giant, steaming, invisible turd.

latebloomer: Do I have a large frog in my hair? (latebloomer), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)
