Life: less repetitive than you might think!

One doesn't have to think very hard to think of things that one has done for THE FIRST TIME IN ONE'S LIFE each day, I find.

For example, today I got the bus home to work and back in my lunch hour for the first time ever.

What's the most remarkable thing you'd done for the first time today?

Apologies to those actually trapped in a box (unless you've just got trapped).

Alba (Alba), Monday, 21 November 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

read the newspaper for Nov. 21, 2005!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 21 November 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

That is fairly unremarkable, though. Have you nothing better?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 21 November 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

it's early still

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 21 November 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

i got nothing.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Well it's still early in the day but I've not done anything that I haven't done a bazillions times before - shown up slightly late for work, drank some coffee, read ilx.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I guess reading this thread is something I've never done before :/

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Think laterally! Maybe something you saw rather than something you did.

Whenever I've tried this before there's always been something. Maybe I've just been lucky or my life is especially fascinating, despite appearances.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Ate one roll & bacon, one packet of Salt n Vinegar Square crisps followed by a strawberry Nutrigrain Bar, two glasses of water and a chicken noodle Cup a Soup.

I'm confident I have never ingested these things in the order before. Ever.

Rumpie, Monday, 21 November 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

i suppose i talked slightly adultishly about my granddad's imminent death?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, ooh, I got one.
I moved a box of stale donuts off of my desk.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I was shown some "Vanilla & Coconut" tea - not a variety I'd ever seen before.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, the least repetative thing I've done today is wear my new sweater and new bra. I suppose my date tonight is such a rare occasion that it deserves comment, but probably doesn't count.

The Damp Is Rising (kate), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I flicked through the new tabloid-sized Sunday Herald for the first time.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

I have never cooked that many sausages at the one time

voe marshall, Monday, 21 November 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

I successfully medicated a migraine on the first try.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

I wished a tech support phone-droid person good luck with his attempts to sort out an on-going problem. He thanked me and said most people just moan.

This afternoon I will helping to put together a podcast. I've never done that before.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

I moved a box of stale donuts off of my desk.

And into your stomach?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm considering it. They could have been placed there any time between 3 p.m. Friday and 8:02 a.m. today. But one of them is a Boston Cream (my favourite), and those don't really go bad since they're entirely synthetic.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Oh, that reminds me. I saw a mouldy carrot cake for the first time ever.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Thinking about it, I don't even remember seeing any kind of mouldy cake before, but surely I must have done?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

I would guess that as a type of food, cake is less likely to have the chance to grow mould than almost anything else.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I guess so. This was the carrot cake icing. It was only a week old.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Maybe you ate the moldy cake before you could see that it was moldy!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Today was the first time I've ever gone to the gym before eight o'clock in the morning.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

I started a new bar of soap with my shower today. Which I have done before, but it's a rare enough occasion to feel special.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

read the identity cards bill

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Gone into work with quite visible facial injuries after slipping on ice during a weekend in Finland.

James Ward (jamesmichaelward), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm wearing Heidi braids today for the first time since I graduated from pinafores. It's a little odd & I may not repeat.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

I got something to work between an MSDE database and ASP.NET (which I am learning) - a moment of triumph.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm wearing a new shirt that I bought on Saturday.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 21 November 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Colleague's theory on the mouldy cake: damp nuts.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Saw my first robin red-breast of the winter.
Missed out on the chance to buy an iMac G5 for £375 by minutes.

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

But... but... carrot cake is iced with cream cheese, no? And cheese goes moldy like nobody's business, because it's *supposed* to.

The Damp Is Rising (kate), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

I climbed an external fire escape in London to get to an office; I came in to work to find that my computer wouldn't even turn on (its mother board was fried by a hoover seems to be the current diagnosis); I bought satsumas from the best stall on Berwick Street market.

xpost - my hideous former boss fancied herself as a bit of a cook, and brough in a cake for somone's birthday; the cake was very well made but she'd used off cream in the icing and no-one had the heart to tell her. Gross.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

I just gave out my home phone number for work purposes. AND INSTANTLY REGRETTED IT.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

I just swept up the remains of the first pint glass my kitten has ever smashed.

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 21 November 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

I used the word "inshallah" for the first time ever in a text message.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Let that be a lesson to you - kittens make nasty drunks.

xpost

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Kate, you're probably right. I'm a bit of a carrot cake icing ignoramus.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

For some reason I thought this was going to be a Hanle y thread. Oh well. Alba is very good too.

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

I had lemon curd on scotch pancakes, I've never done this before!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

I showed a bruise to a coworker.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

This is a positive thread, I will think more about the subtle differences that occur.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

I arranged to take someone out for lunch on an expense account to discuss business. I feel so grown up!

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 21 November 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

I got lunch at Cosi today, and I walked through the building it's in to get there rather than along the sidewalk around it. Somehow that had never occurred to me before.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 21 November 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Also I got a brownie there for the first time.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 21 November 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

roffled at the phrase "damp nuts"

j b everlovin' r (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 21 November 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

I doubt many of you have really actually roffled. (on the floor)

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 21 November 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

b-b-but the floor is dirty!

j b everlovin' r (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 21 November 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

oh, and last week was the first 3" cd single of the year (of several years, last one was shinkansen christmas thing i think, a lifetime ago). oddly enough, they were the same band.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

i have moved to a desk next to and looking out of a window for the first time in an office. now i look over the site of sheffields old castle, pulled down in the civil war, and where it stood now is a crummy old market building. the window is wide, and the sky bright and blue, and in the distance i can see the hill where crookes and walkley rise above the town, so this is a good thing for me today.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

New bra, new knickers, new tights.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

I just made homemade eggnog for the first time ever and it tastes GREAT! Yum!

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 24 November 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

I paid my phone bill and bought Woolworths own make AAA batteries.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 24 November 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

I plan to have even more fun tomrrow. Perhaps I'll go into Blockbusters.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 24 November 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

I made deviled eggs with lime mayonnaise instead of regular mayonnaise. I wasn't sure they'd be good, but I love 'em, and it's more for me if nobody else does.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 24 November 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

I got hugged by a random Rangers fan in a pub when they equalised against Porto last night. I don't usually go to the sort of pub where this is liable to happen.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 24 November 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

I just got threatened with litigation for the first time. Sadly I can't go into details on this thread. I was mortified at the time, now I think it's kind of funny.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 24 November 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

I sewed a button on a pair of trousers. This could lead to comedy tomorrow, when I attempt to wear them at work.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 24 November 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

well, my mouse is broken, so this is the first time I've been desperate enough to surf the internet that I've tabbed my way through the entire way.

Also, first time waking up in a long-time friend's apartment, which is a little odd because you think I would have slept over before now.

xpost Jel, where in the world are there still Woolworth's?!?

emilys. (emilys.), Thursday, 24 November 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

emilys, that would be the UK.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 24 November 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

i bought a jello mold today - never done that before.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 24 November 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
I got BITTEN by a DOG!! Wtf?! In the street - it was, I think, a boxer, and according to its owner "it's my brother's dog - it's out of control".

It's not a bad bite thankfully but still, I was shaking afterwards.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 12 December 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

oh no! are you going to have to get the jabs for rabies?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 12 December 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Ken, we live in Britain, we don't have rabies.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 12 December 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

::starts foaming at mouth::

Kate Classic (kate), Monday, 12 December 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

what they've banned rabies in britain?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 12 December 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

It's political correctness gone mad!!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 12 December 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

presumably it offends Rabbis.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 12 December 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

My dad had to get a tetanus jag when he got bitten by a dog. No rabies though.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 12 December 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

When I was younger I was bitten by the Dulux dog's sister.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 12 December 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

My mum may have made a celebrity of the dog to make the incident less painful.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 12 December 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

I watched Pingu for the first time ever, this morning.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

I taught two workshops! I am a teacher now.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Did you ever think about the *last* time that you do things?

This morning, while eating breakfast, I thought "this is the last time I'm going to be sitting at this table eating breakfast." (Which may not be true as I will probably eat breakfast there tomorrow.)

Kate Classic (kate), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure my days of buying random CD's from Indie Record Stores are over. I went in one the other week, and there was just nothing there that interested me.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

I thought "this is the last time I'll ever do x"-type thoughts a lot when I was preparing to leave London.

I was originally intending to bore you all with posting new things every day, but I quickly found that a lot of the things that were new each day were too private to put up here. Which makes it sound like I'm talking about outlandish masturbation practices or something, I realise, but that's not the case.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

Damn. I was really looking forward to hearing about the outlandish masturbation practices. First RJG won't post pictures of his hair, and now you won't reveal your dirty thoughts. My day is ruined.

Kate Classic (kate), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

I came to work this morning with my shirt on backwards!

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

I wish I could think of something new I've done recently, I think I've been stuck in a rut.

I got lost in the basement of my workplace; a security guy had to show me the way out.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

outlandish masturbation

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

I think it would involve puppets.

Lars and Jagger (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Not mine, but my mother-in-law got a phone call from a tabloid journalist asking about a recently--mega-famous TV actor WHO (spot the subtle clue) she knew in his younger days. I'm pretty sure that's never happened to her before.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

I watched Pingu for the first time ever, this morning.

Damn, I watched Pingu on Sunday with friends for the first time ever since I was a kid. I hadn't even realized how hysterical it is, everyone should rewatch it as an adult.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I'm still stuck on the outlandish masturbation.

Kate Classic (kate), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Do tell.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

It's not a bad bite thankfully but still, I was shaking afterwards.

Maybe better to SHAKE THE DOG OFF you the next time. ;-)

The last time a dog bit me, it bit me in the lip. It was my mum's dog, Basiel, who's now sadly dead. God, I miss that dog. :-(

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

It was also the first time I saw that Tuomas picture. I'm hoping also the last time. ;-)
