Music-related tattoos

I'm thinking of getting a tattoo. The symbol I've decided I like best is an obscurish early logo of a well-known (and now defunct) record label. Is this a foolish thing to do? The image is still quite striking when taken out of context.

New tattoo answers

For a while there I wanted a 4AD tattoo. Still do, actually.

I've got the EN logo on my arm. Not Rollins-related! I Was A Young Deconstructionist...
I'm still pondering whether I should get the Lords of the New Church dagger underneath.

Tattooing yrself with the phase ROUGH TRADE in block caps will garner you no end of exciting adventures, electric sound of jim

Jim, what tattoo, innit? Is it the record label of popular beat band ACE OF BASE?

I've always thought FACTORY's factory would make a nice tattoo as well. Slightly depressing if you *actually* work in a factory, though.

Simon, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You're bang on with Factory there. It's the logo that appears on the Wake's "Harmony" album (and possibly elsewhere) that I want. I think it's a lovely image.. and something I think I'd be unlikely to get sick of in a hurry.

Although Rough Trade is tempting. As is 4AD. In fact, 4AD was one I was seriously considering for a while.

Interestingly, at no stage have I been tempted to get Sub Pop tattooed on my person.

If you like the image, why is it foolish? Foolish would be to get like NSync's logo tattooed on yourself (or any band, I am just using NSync as an example), or something like that. I'm sure at least half the people who see it aren't going to locate it as a former logo of a record label (I mean, honestly), so...what's it look like then anyhow? It's an image, and if you like the image WITHOUT the context, then it's not foolish.

That would be it.

if it's p.saville then chances are serious that it's nicked from some old futurist anyway

mark s, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh what a cool idea. maybe i'll get a tattoo of the slag strut records logo. damn right!

di, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In any case, I like it.

Simon, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually if I'm going to get a tattoo of anything it'll have to be the Kranky logo. They're the only label that I buy anything and everything from, sight unseen (or sound unheard, rather).

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

At this point, the only music logo (or anything for that matter) I'd consider getting a tattoo for is the Rocket From The Crypt rocket logo. (Yup, the one that looks like an overhead of a roasting pig.) And it would be a Mike Stobbe one... if I'm going to brand something permanently on me, I'd might as well travel to San Diego to have it done right.

Brian MacDonald, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, I like your logic, but then I guess that would mean I'd have to get a Harriet Records tattoo. Which I don't think I want to.

I have a memory of Archie Moore from Velocity Girl saying "Chris from Sleepyhead has a tattoo on his arm of a star, and around it it says SLEEPYHEAD--ROCK BAND. That's the only thing I've ever seen that's made _me_ want to get a tattoo. And if I did, mine would also say SLEEPYHEAD--ROCK BAND."

I'd never get somebody else's symbol tattooed on me, what if they did something really evil the very next week. I'm sure there's someone out there with a Glitter Band tattoo.

dave q, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the sign from the Paul's Boutique album cover tattooed on my back.

Samantha, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells logo tattoed on my arm - left upper.

Jonnie, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a 45rpm adapter tattoo.

Sean, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuzztones, Skull with the two Vox Phantoms, not the name though, and of course the mandatory circle A from whence I was a hardcore punk rocker and the 'Flipper' fish with x's for eyes.

Hank, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tempted to have a DEAD MAN RAY tattoo. But uh no, i better not. I just wouldn't look coolio.

helenfordsdale, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If I were to get a tattoo it would definitely be of the East 17 dog logo.

alix, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
I have an Nsync star tattooed on the inside of my left ankle....i love it. i would get another Nsync on in a second. I think if that type of music is a big enough influence and part of your life, why not get it? It's the same as someone getting anyting else tattooed. To each his own... and mine happens to be a band tattoo :D
