Is this not brilliant? I am a little worried that I won't be able to watch real news any more without giggling at - well, everything about it really. The scrolling headlines are particularly genius.

This is the first time I've ever heard anyone say anything good about this programme anywhere and at anytime

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

I have never heard anyone say anything about it ever, except the other 'arf, who made me watch it last night. I don't know whether the format will take sustained viewings, but it had me laughing out loud, something Jon Stewart and Never Mind the Buzzcocks both failed to do.

But then News 24 made me laugh even harder. /shrug

Zora (Zora), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

I assume you've seen "The Day Today"?

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

Yes, of course. And the news has been somewhat hilarious ever since. Perhaps I'm just getting a resonance effect.

Zora (Zora), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

I've been watching it, and it makes me laugh. Yes, it's a "The Day Today" rip-off, but as far as I'm concerned that's a good thing.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

I confess I haven't seen it but a "Day Today" rip-off sounds like a terrible idea.

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

The "[X] is rubbish because it's exactly like [thing like X but better and cooler]" meme is so flawed. Being good, and being like something that's better, is a good thing, people!

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

That's true, but a glaring absence of originality can get in the way of teh funnies, no?

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

It's a lot less sharp than The Day Today; it's rambling, slightly unfocussed, rather gentle. But it is funny. And I wouldn't say there's a 'glaring absence of originality', b/c the format and tone are both v. different from The Day Today.

Zora (Zora), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was utter shit.

Rumpie, Tuesday, 22 November 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

The format and the gags are virtually the same! Newsreaders talking nonsense, meaningless graphics, 'amusing' names for people and football teams – and it's all a piss take of tv news. To be funny, surely it needs to make a point that hasn't been made before? I agree it's kind of amusing though.

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

What makes it different, apart from the lack of acerbity, is the channel-flicking thing, which, yes, owes a lot to the fast show, but then Kundera owes a lot to Kafka and you don't slate him for it...

Zora (Zora), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

... he doesn't owe enough IMO

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

the one thing that did make me chuckle were the tickertape stock price names flying by. but yes, nothing Collaterly Sisters didn't do years ago.

oh, and it has the woman with the Russian sounding name from B5.

Everything in the world now is better than everything in the world was two seconds ago

This is excruciatingly awful.

Kevin Day is a writer, and I've always like him.

We watched a couple of episodes of The Day Today straight after the first of these and it was much, much funnier. And considerably less irritating.
