Occasionally on the internet, trolls say "I am not a troll - I was just trying to get a reaction".

Is this a valid mode of discourse?

I think it's pretty dud, and also pointless. I can't offhand think of any instance where it was signal, not noise, so to speak.

If you poke somebody in the eye you get a reaction. Bit pointless tho. Devil's Advocacy or playing the Socratic gadfly is alwez a good thing tho, as is giving stupid or indirect answers to stupid questions.
