anthony, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

30 US states, four Canadian provinces, a slew of English and Scottish counties (couldn't quite count them all). Faves? I'm biased towards California, of course -- but beyond that, Utah had some absolutely stunning views (Logan may not have much, but damn does it have scenery), Montana has some great open spaces as well as the Bitterroot Valley, upstate New York is exquisite for hikes and camping, the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina and roundabout there equally impressive, Maine's Acadia National Park is a dream, my early memories of Hawaii remain wonderful, Scotland as a whole has never let me down (Edinburgh pips San Francisco in terms of the sheer beauty of the physical location of the place) and I really like Devon, for whatever reason -- haven't gone back in years, though.

Places I still have yet to visit which I'd like to -- Texas (just to see what all the shouting is about), Florida (likewise), Wales, Ireland, Vancouver and Vancouver Island, Alaska, Italy, Spain, Portugal, St. Petersburg, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand. I'd also love to go to Iran, but the political situation would have to rapidly improve first.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

8 provinces, 45 states. I loved Texas because it reminded me of home. Maine broke my heart . Alaska was the most awe inspiring. Driving across Sask. became Zen like in is reptitions, with towns like beads on a rosary. Manhattan was when i convinced myself i wanted to be in the arts . Victoria seems to call me back .

anthony, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Essex is the place to be. Well, it's better than Kent anyway.

DG, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Never been to America or Australia, and I have no idea where any counties are (Does anyone else have this?).

Can I play European Countries trumps instead? England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Germany, Switzerland, Luxemburg, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Denmark and Italy, and I've seen Sweden and Spain from the other side of the border. Belgium is obviously coolest, followed by Switzerland and Italy.

Graham, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I don't know, maybe I've been in about 2 dozen states (maybe a little more, counting drive-throughs on my way to other states). I don't really have a favorite. I do know that Texas looks like a blighted wasteland, though.

Josh, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Besides Québec, I've been to Ontario, New York, Missouri, New Jersey and Florida. Québec is my favorite, 'cause it's home and I know more good things about it than about any other place.

Patrick, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Without looking at a map, I'd say about 36 states - nearly all of the states east of the Mississippi, except Maine and New Hampshire, I believe. Fewer of the western states.

My favorite was Utah, where I went camping in the southeastern part of the state. Unbelievable if you're from flat, green swampland. I know it's Mormon, but god damn, it's beautiful. We drove into the southern part at night, camped under the stars, and I awoke at sunrise to find we were sleeping under one of those great red pinnacles. I also went hiking in the mountains in the north of Utah. Got to go back.

I'm a sucker for Wisconsin - my rural haven, spent many a summer there as a kid. Not dramatic, but deeply affecting green, piney land. And lots of Holstein cows lazily hanging about everywhere you go.

Only one Canadian province - I'm so ashamed. That would be Ontario of course - only a five hours drive from me.
One European country, the United Kingdom, primarily London but also a bit of places south of there. Weird - the south of England is like river country in Illinois, only with older buildings. I'm too "poor" to have gone elsewhere, but I'm working on it.

Kerry Keane, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Provinces - BC (duh), Alberta, Saskatchewan (August, lost souls), Manitoba (Slogan should be "At least it's not Saskatchewan" - actually Winnipeg rocks, complete with fearsome urban ghetto - think Chicago North), Ontario (lots of insects)
States - Washington (trailer trash, outside Coffee Republic Central), Oregon (ditto), Cali (should be 'two states' like Malkmus said), Nevada, Utah ("Let's do it"), Montana (Hi Ted K!), Idaho, Wyoming (luv luv LUV it! Also, everybody there is on crystal meth), Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois ("Mission from God!"), Ohio ("But the Lord can't make you burn..."), Indiana (Now THIS is an interesting state. Why are all Hoosiers such fucking nutjobs? Axl Rose, Michael Jackson, David Lee Roth...corn psychosis?), Joisey, New York, and from that point on it was across the pond. That was fun! Makes me think maybe my life hasn't been a total waste.

pissed, stoned, smacked, whacked, bent, broke and plain old fucked. Alternatively, 5 states and territories of Australia, plus 18 provinces of Argentina. plus the auckland airport- and what a state it was in.

Geoff, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Good god, it'd be easier to lists states I *hadn't* been in. Considering that it's twice now I've got a two-week Amtrak pass and just planned crazy transcontinental trips with the express purpose of seeing how many states I could visit in an alotted time. I haven't been to Alaska, Hawaii, Montana or North Dakota, but I think I've been in the rest. Oh, and Florida. I've not been to Florida, either.

And my favourite is still NY state. Though I think Oregon might be sneaking up on it, due to its having better mountains.

English counties, I'll let you know when I get back from tour. I really do think we're going to be hitting every single one, except maybe Cornwall.

I can only think of Suffolk, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Humberside, that I haven't been to but there's probably some that have no impact on my mind that I have been to. I drive through Leicsestershire loads just never stopped though.

US states: Florida, NY, Louisiana, California. Only saw urban souther california and it was horrible. infact I've only ever been to urban bits of the US.

Texas. Houston to be precise. For a total of about an hour, mainly spent watching Celebrity Squares. I tell you, that gives you a great taste of the States.

State on inebriation is my favourite, I think. Though I often find myself in a state of confusion, state of bemusement, and just 'in a state'.

Don't really register places very well, I'm afraid. I liked Florida, and Oxfordshire, and NY State. But couldn't really say much about them.

The front desk clerk called the other hotels and when he could not find a room called B&Bs. He must have spent an hour trying to find a hotel. He then comped dinner and a cab to the new hotel.

I've been to more European countries than US states. Hell, I've probably been to more Asian countries than US states. My favorite state is Texas, even though I haven't been there. Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Walker, Texas Ranger...it just has the best mythology. Nevada's cool too, because of the casinos. The worst state is Utah by far; absolutely bizarre, EVIL people.

Kris, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'd have to say it matters WHERE in the state in question. New Jersey is pretty awful from what I've seen. New Hampshire seems full of militias and conservatives,Massachusetts people dont us e blinkers, Maine just wants your tourist money, Rhode Island drinks Autocrat, Pennsylvanias are emotionally needy, ...to be honest even despite some differences I am suprised at how similar alomst all of the USA is. As for nature, I like EVERY state for its nature, be it the redwoods or the plains or adirondacks.

I have been to 3 Canadian Provinces, 25 states, England, Spain, Portugal, and Italy. There is no finer place on Earth as Delaware..... No, not really

I would say perhaps Arizona, if no one lived there, it has the most amazing natural scenery, cluttered by crappy little towns and motels everywhere. No place I've been is more boring than Kansas, and no place has more Religious jibberish littering the landscape than Indiana.

Barcelona may be my favorite place. Wish I spoke Catalan, or even Spanish for that matter.

Five Canadian provinces (all bar the French ones).

Uh, AP, by my count, that would make 9 provinces, maybe 8 1/2 if you want to be generous and count New Brunswick as half-french.

Yes, Chris, but as I always say immunity is dead. I don't think people in these places are any more "backward" than Londoners, and many of them read these forums. Three quarters of the parliamentary seats in Devon and Cornwall are held by the progressive parties, as well: who'd have imagined that 10 years ago? All our lives have changed irrevocably, mine included.

Richard: you might also think of the Totnes hippies - the Dartington Hall effect again, as so often.

OK then (depressingly badly-travelled): Greater London, Kent, Essex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Dorset, Somerset, Surrey, Wiltshire, Devon, East and West Sussex, West and North Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire (a county abolished in 1974, but I've definitely been to where it was - now absorbed into Cambridgeshire), Avon (as was), South Gloucestershire (is that where Bristol is now?), North East Somerset (I think that's where Bath is now), Strathclyde (Glasgow).

Birthplace: Greater London. Have lived there (very briefly), in Kent, and in Dorset.

Outside Britain: only France, I'm afraid.

I've never been to Illnois, Kerry, but I like your analogy, and I sort-of understand it. Have you been to the Dartford / Gravesend area of Kent?

Ned: I remember you only went to the inland parts of Devon. Sensible man.

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh, and my favourites: Greater London and Dorset, by a mile. No other two areas of Britain can come close. I still have considerable affection for Kent, though.

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Patrick: uh, yeah. Sorry, w/ Canadian provinces I think of everything East of Ontario as "French", and whatever's North of most populated ones as, ummm, ice. So, phew, have been to BC, Alberta, Sask, Handsome Dick Manitoba, and Ontario.

Including passing through I've been to 19 states:

New York, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona.

I had the best times in Wisconsin, with honourable mentions to Illinois, California, Louisiana, Oregon, New Jersey and New York.

Mainly because I've spent more time in those states than anything. (I lived in Wisconsin for 4 months.)

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

You kinda have to declare the rules in this game. I've always had it that drive throughs don't count unless you get out of the car, and similarly layovers do count if you get out of the plane. Ideally, of course, you buy something in the state, and the commerce transaction makes it quite official.

So: I've been up and down both coasts and made a few small excursions into the middle. I've been to ME, NH, MA, RI, CT, NY, PA, NJ, DE, MD, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL (still haven't hit Vermont); I've done WA, OR, CA, NV, UT, ID, WY, CO; I've spent some time in IL; and I've done the layover thing in TX, MO, MI, AZ, OH.

That makes 29; obviously I have huge stretches of the country to see (the Midwest, the deep South). Florida is by far my least favorite state I've been to; Oregon and New York are home; Utah and North Carolina were the most consistantly attractive to drive through, although certainly most states have their attractive areas.

I haven't left the country, and thus haven't been to any provinces, though I plan on finally getting up to BC this summer and touring through Saskatchewan and the rest of the prairies this fall. The truly foreign countries will probably have to wait another year (sigh).

Um, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Arkansas, Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, California....so 24 states.

Favorite is New Mexico: variety of landscapes, deserts meets mountains, beautiful clear deep blue skies, good climate (mean elevation is about 4K feet so it's usu not THAT hot), extreme desolation (Jornada del Muerto (sp?), ancient pueblos still lived in, quietness/wilderness, good food (even got some really good Chicago-style Pizza in Santa Fe), extremely friendly, laid-back people. Favorite part of New Mexico: Tularoosa Basin, in between Sacremento--almost sheer cliffs that vault 5000 feet above the valley--and San Andres mountains. White Sands is there, so you can be completely surrounded by bright white dunes in the desert and see snow capped mountains at the same time.

Least Favorite: Iowa

Both times I was there, it was empty except for a few stoic-looking Icelandic guards, and nobody would answer my questions when my flight was delayed for four hours, and everything was wood, and footsteps echoed eerily through the vacant corridors, and there was one tiny smoking lounge and I sat in it and drank Pilsner Urquell with a Harvard student and we did crossword puzzles and I was so much better at them than she was. And they sold Bjork cds on Icelandair. It was just a strange experience.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 June 2003 13:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't have a favorite, but I have been to 49 of the 50 states. (Hawaii is the one I haven't visited.) Many of them were when I was pretty young, so I can't say I remember them all well.

A couple weeks ago when I visited Jen Nstop and other ilx folk in Seattle, I crossed Washington off of the list of states I had not yet been in.

I've lived in Virginia (Charlottesville), Alaska (Homer), Arizona (Phoenix), Tennessee (Nashville), Pennsylvania (Bethlehem) and New York (NYC). Of those, New York is easily my favorite, though the city of Bethlehem has a special urban decay sort of charm that I really dig.

Me too except for the trip I took to Paris a few months ago. But I got my first ever passport for that one...

I've heard of Paris. France, right? That's supposed to be nice, over there. (Must. Travel. Someday.)

Neudonym, Thursday, 5 June 2003 18:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh, yes. Paris, France. come to think of it, I've never been to any of the Parises in the US. I know there's one in TX...

So far, I got most of the U.S. states.. I still need to visit Alaska and Hawaii (both of which I plan to cross off my list within a year from now). Also have not visited Maine and Florida in the other two corners, and Wyoming and Colorado in the Rockies. Otherwise, I've not visited all the very middle states.

Favorite state: Washington (practical), New Mexico & Arizona & Utah (natural beauty)

Canada: Visited British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec only. Want to do Trans-Canada one of these days... (though I might fly out to New Brunswick to see family some time..)

Favorite: B.C... though I want to visit all those eastern provinces.

I haven't been anywhere, apparently. I have lived in NYC and DC and (sort of) Seattle. I have also been in NJ, PA, DE, MD, VA, NC, CT, RI, MA, NH, VT, ME, CA, AZ, UT, CO, and BC. And I've been to London and Paris, but was 5 and barely remember. And if I've never been in NM, I spent the night about 200 yards away. Favorite places other than home - Western Washington and Southern Utah.

I've been in all states west of the Mississippi, excluding Alaska (got stuck in British Columbia during fleet week. Oh well.). And east of the mighty Miss? Most of the south - but anything north of Virginia is foreign territory to me.

My favorite state? Probably Oregon or Washington, for the beauty of the lush landscape and the wildness of the mountains. But Nevada runs a close second - especially in the winter, when the desert is icy old and the air is dry and biting and the sky is a brilliant blue - perfect for clambering around old graveyards and such.

I've a soft spot in my heart for Northern California - that's for the land, not necessarily the people and so forth - just give me the mountains and running water and perfect trout streams in the high country and I am blissfully content.

Countries - Canada, Bahamas, Germany, France, Spain.
