In an flourish of retro-chic, the “ello Tosh gotta Toshiba” TV adverthas been revived as part of a major new marketing push from Toshiba’sComputer Systems Division...
Breaking on Monday 17 October, the new advertisement featuresToshiba’s memorable Blueprint man speaking the familiar tag line,“ello Tosh”, originally recorded by Ian Dury, and now updated byMadness singer Suggs.
The original advert featuring the tagline “ello Tosh” was creatednearly 20 years ago in 1987 by Dave Trott, creative director fromadvertising agency GGT.

DFGW has created the new advertisement. Although originally used topromote Toshiba’s televisions, today the phrase “’ello Tosh” from theBlueprint man will be promoting Toshiba’s latest range of laptops, highlighting features such as spill resistant keyboards and dropresistant technology.
To give the campaign a modern edge, the advertisement features ahigh-tech electronics laboratory where robots subject Toshibanotebooks to a series of rigorous tests. The Blueprint man has evolvedfrom a 2D image to 3D wire mesh man to reflect the advancement intechnology over the intervening years. As well as voice over fromSuggs, the advert also features rapped lyrics from JC001, whoaccording to the Guinness book of records is the fastest rapper alive.

Matt McDowell, marketing manager for Toshiba Computer Systems Divisioncommented, “We were looking for a way to make Toshiba’s advertisingstand out amongst the noise, and the more we thought about it, themore we realised that the Blueprint man and his “ello Tosh” taglinewas the answer. If you ask anyone what they think of in relation toToshiba, most people cite the advert first.”
Dave Waters, creative director at DFGW said, “The 'ello Tosh’ taglinehas gone down in advertising history, demonstrated by the fact peoplestill remember it today - it’s been a privilege to take the originalcreative and give it a modern twist. It will be interesting to see theimpact the new advertisements have on the general public, andcrucially the impact it will have on Toshiba’s laptop sales.”
As well as television advertising the campaign will be supportedonline advertisements, and a specially created “ello Tosh” website.

Note: The song used and adapted in the adverts was originally "Hello,John Got a new Motor" released by comedian Alexi Sayle in the early80's.
