Laziest thread ever.

Yes, I have plenty of free time at the moment.

let's hope simple_solution knows about laptops, too!

g-spot (g-kit), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

sorry, i don't know dick about laptops.

simple_solution, Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm... well, just throwing this out there you know?

More in frustration than hope of easy solutions or vaguely useful tips.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

sorry, he insists that he has no clue about laptops, having never owned one. er, whoever he is.

g-spot (g-kit), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

I's assumed that was some kind of ILX in-joke that flew right over my head anyway so, no worries :)

Check out http://www.hotukdeals.com/ as they often link to some good deals on laptops/desktops, mostly Dell though. Currently there's one for a little over £400 listed but the spec ain't the best.

Why use Linux on an iBook? Mac OS X will run X-Windows, and has vastly better power management as well.

pity you didn't spend any of it on google 8)

um, the 500 pound thing may be tricky.
(ha, i have one of these: http://walbran.org/sean/linux/znote/znote.html
but mine's a 486)

linux on ibook may be more successful:

i assumed this was a call for help after seeing the AMAZING advice dished out by a random stranger on the "i wants me a sub £500 computer lol" thread.

g-spot (g-kit), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

it's a fair cop ;)

Thanks koogs. Very much appreciated, this is probably something I'll pencil in to start having a go at next week (after much careful perusal and some printing, of those kind of notes/instructions).

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

is this just a learning exercise or do you have something in mind?

(not that this changes anything above, i'm just being nosey. have toyed with a linux laptop for myself, if only so i can code down the park in summer. problem is the cost especially if you want accelerated opengl support (which i do))

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 24 November 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Why would you want to put Linux on an iBook!?!

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 24 November 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

xpost - partly curiosity, partly a learning exercise (steep learning curve no doubt!), partly just not wanting to be beaten, partly the millions of things I HATE SO MUCH about OSX (I'm won't go into them here (I have a text file somewhere with all my frustrations I promised myself I'd send to apple feedback one day... when it's made legible)).

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 24 November 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

ILXors switching to Apples. It's a Thanksgiving miracle!

Anyways, forgive my ignorance, but is there much advantage to running Linux on a Mac instead of a PC? I imagine the vast majority of problems with PC's is due to software, including the OS, which would obviously be remedied with Linux. Hence the reason servers are almost always on some flavor of *nix, and never Windows, and I may be wrong here, but I haven't heard much about Mac servers.

Anyways, good luck fandango.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 24 November 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

No advantage at all except that I'm still oddly reluctant to sell my iBook...

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 24 November 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Goodluck finding something to do with it.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 24 November 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

I ran Linux on my Pizmo-era powerbook for years and it was great, other than annoyances with X and a one-button mouse. Linux is a hell of a lot faster than OS X on an aging piece of hardware, that's for sure.

I really appreciated the Amazing Advice mysterious solution kitten figure! I need to sort out money stuff first :(
