This could be a short thread.

Best of luck!

And now, I'm off. Se ys later.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 24 November 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

I’m fucking sick of hearing about this cunt George Best. He got preferential treatment because he his famous and as money gets a transplant and fucks it up by drinking. Fuck it he should not have had the op in the first place let alone all the attention he’s getting now. The medical team shoudl not help him turnoff all the equipment and let him die he fucked up in the first place by thinking he could live like he did. It’s his fault he doe’s not deserve to live. Someone as died to give him what a second chance that he blew? Another few drinks? Someone could have had the transplant in his place and made a difference not wasted it. It goes to show how unfair things are. If it was me I would have refused to have treated him in the first place.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Thursday, 24 November 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Is that Roy Keane's statement?

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Thursday, 24 November 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Where is he now in relation to that bottle? On it? In it? Nearby? Does he hit it? Or merely tap it? Could he be off it? Or is he above it?

Aimless (Aimless), Thursday, 24 November 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Are you sure? I walked past the butcher's earlier and there was a sign up saying 'Best liver for sale'.

Cha-ching!

danski (danski), Thursday, 24 November 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

He has to die today, the day when twenty four drinking becomes law. His work here is done.

snotty moore, Thursday, 24 November 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

he is dead isn't he? the evening standard last edition posterthingies said "best slips away" when i was walking through liverpool st station a few hours ago, anyway.

emsk ( emsk), Friday, 25 November 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

I think 'slipping away' would have been more accurate. He continues to cling grimly on.

Apparently he wants to donate his organs after he dies; his liver's screwed, his kidneys are fucked, his lungs are full of blood... Tasty right foot, though.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 25 November 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

Wow! The jokes are in, Before he's off. (Not bad, though)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 25 November 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

the old ones are the best ones.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 25 November 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

he's not that old

RJG (RJG), Friday, 25 November 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

shit

RJG (RJG), Friday, 25 November 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

pre-emptive, but i gotta let it out:

Hasta la vista, Besty.

g-spot (g-kit), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

Front cover of every fucking paper "Middle aged alcoholic not dead yet". Unbelievable.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's almost as if he was one of the most famous celebrities in British history with a large fanbase who would be upset if he died, isn't it?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

little bit of hyperbole never hurt anyone

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

unless it was hyperbole of the balls.

Sailor Kitten (g-kit), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

I know Besty was considered to be one of the most talented footballers of his day, but how do you think he'd stand up to comparison with today's players (if he were playing at his height of fitness now)?

C J (C J), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

He certainly knows how to drag it out.
The papers are gagging for him to croak it. Front page this morning on the metro, big black & white photo of young best, I thought he’d died already.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

Then tell when he dies. That he's still alive is not news.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

as stated on the other thread, he won't die. he'll pull through. because he's a death cheating TERMINATOR. he'll wake up and the doctor will be like "OMG BESTY WOKED UP" and Best will just look at him/her and be all like, "Fuck you, asshole."

Sailor Kitten (g-kit), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

I hope so.

C J (C J), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

if he lives, they should put him upfront in germany.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

and then Everton will buy him for $half a million

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

as i said on the other thread, he should last 120 years on his existing power cell. so he's only halfway.
problem is, he won't ever learn to stop drinking because skynet set his neural net processor to read only. they don't want him to do to much thinking.

Sailor Kitten (g-kit), Friday, 25 November 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

That he's still alive is news. Fact is, while he stays as such, like the pope, they can run and run with news stories, photos, and 'well wishers' tributes and so on.

When he goes, only one more day of fulltime coverage, then the tribs, then everyone goes home.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 25 November 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

bloody hell he's taking longer to die than the pope did

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Friday, 25 November 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

he cannot self terminate. the doctors must lower him into some steel.

Sailor Kitten (g-kit), Friday, 25 November 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

...and all those TV news channel people can continues to claim overtime for "covering" overnight in case of an "important" announcement.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 25 November 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

"if he lives, they should put him upfront in germany. "

Ah, but Norn Iron didn't qualify...

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 25 November 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Stranger things have happened.

Actually, that's not true.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 25 November 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

do you think the doctor said to him "come with me if you want to live"?

Sailor Kitten (g-kit), Friday, 25 November 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

No I think he said "Girl you'd better have fun no matter what you do"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 25 November 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

But he's a fool.

C J (C J), Friday, 25 November 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

they should give him a bottle of glenmorangie to finish himself off in a fashion he’s accustomed to.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 25 November 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

Didn't he abuse his wife at one point? I seem to recall she accused him of hitting her?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 25 November 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Oh aye, he's a national hero.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 25 November 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

he broke her arm in a fight once.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 25 November 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

hasta la vista etc.

Sailor Kitten (g-kit), Friday, 25 November 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

Lovelace (Lovelace), Friday, 25 November 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Pele say he was the best player in the world of his time?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 25 November 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

i think he said 'playa'.

Sailor Kitten (g-kit), Friday, 25 November 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 25 November 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

does his record prove it?

Lovelace (Lovelace), Friday, 25 November 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 25 November 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

His goals scored are hardly going to compete with Pele's are they?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 25 November 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

In the same league as the other European Players of the Year?

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 25 November 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

how long did Maradona play in Europe for? i'm surprised he never won that.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 25 November 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Him, Keegan and Matthews being the only UK players on that list.

xpost it's about nationality, isn't it? Or did I miss summat?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 25 November 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

bobby charlton and denis law are on it too

:(

Lovelace (Lovelace), Friday, 25 November 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

has the World Player of the Year award really only been going since '91?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 25 November 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

The headline of the Evening Times is GEORGE BEST DEAD, which seems a bit callous.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 25 November 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

as does this thread title now (and perhaps initially too).

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 25 November 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

He's still alive inside all of us.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 25 November 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

i have been wearing the associated wedding present badge for a couple of weeks now. nobody seems to have noticed.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 25 November 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

wear it upside down now.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 25 November 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

I think he was the best of them all. It was a different game in some ways - less defensive organization, less about hitting the killer pass and more about beating players by dribbling past them - all teams had 2 wingers then, and at least one 'ballplaying' inside-forward. There was no-one better at creating something from nothing than Best - supreme ball control + an amazing body swerve + genuine two-footedness and balance. It didn't matter what angle the ball came to him or from which direction, it was instantly under control and he was off.
I never saw him play live, but I can remember MOTDs and goal-highlights programs from the early 70s, just as he was coming to the end of his time at MUFC. There always seemed to be a goal that involved him beating 5 defenders and the keeper, usually in a snowstorm. (It was always snowing in the early 70's of course, even through the summer, and we had nobbut candles to keep us warm, aye.) In the mid 70's he made a comeback for Stockport and I went to see him turn out for them vs Scunthorpe in Div 4 (in the snow, obv). He didn't play. I can't remember if he just didn't turn up, or even whether the match was cancelled - I just know it never happened. (I did see 3 of MUFC's European Cup heroes - Stiles, Sir Bobby and Sadler - play for Preston v Grimsby in Div 3 in around 73/74.)

Dr.C, Friday, 25 November 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

There were only two types of goals then : a) winger 'skins' the full-back and the centre-forward heads it in (Latchford, Royle, Osgood etc) b) striker gets it somewhere in the area and beats clownish defenders milling about in the mud or snow. Takes it up to keeper and scores.
The seasons were leavened by the odd freak who could toe-bog it from 35 yards (Lorimer, B. Charlton). Remember that the ball was v.heavy and it was always snowing.

No-one ever, ever 'shaped' the ball round the keeper, God forbid.

Dr.C, Friday, 25 November 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

My dad saw him play a few times for United in the 60's and reckons he was 'more slippery than an eel' but that he also took a few kicks from 'uncompromising' defenders.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 25 November 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Great posts, Doc.

I'm afraid I am disappointed by the poor taste, the unnecessary casual disrespect, of so much of this thread.

Let it snow.

the pinefox, Friday, 25 November 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

I'm disappointed too PF.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 25 November 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

I'm with the Pinefox and Dr C here. I hope he was without pain at the end, dreaming of jinking (who jinks thesedays?) through the Benfica defence.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 25 November 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

'more slippery than an eel' but that he also took a few kicks from 'uncompromising' defenders.

One of the RTE journalists who interviewed him at the height of his career in the back of a limo said that Best rolled up his trouser legs to show him the bruises from the previous Saturday. His legs were not only black and blue, but a horrible shade of green as well.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 25 November 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

First game I can remember seeing was the 1968 European Cup Final, and Best was maybe the star of the 4-1 defeat of Benfica. With the long hair and fancy skills it's easy to forget that in a team with players like Charlton and Law (three European footballers of the year up front (more or less) in the same side!), Best was the top scorer several years in a row. A really gloriously good player, a very strong contender for the best these islands have ever produced.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 25 November 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Yes - it's either him or Derek Mountfield, really.

the pinefox, Friday, 25 November 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

a waster

RJG (RJG), Friday, 25 November 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

?? He helped Everton to two league titles and three FA Cup Final appearances in the mid-1980s!

the bellefox, Friday, 25 November 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

great, on the news, today, michael parkinson (whom I also dislike):

"george drank because he was bored. everything people found difficult, he found easy. , george had no problem. getting a girl, george had no problem."

RJG (RJG), Friday, 25 November 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

I have an old birthday card sitting on my desk. It features a picture of George Best, and a quote.

I spent a lot of money on booze, birds, and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

RIP
