Marines 'violent bullying' probed

*Probed*

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Sunday, 27 November 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

They're wearing pixelpants (TM)!

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 27 November 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Violence in the nude is always classic.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 27 November 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

"Why are they naked, for goodness sake?"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 27 November 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

No hidden weapons, duh.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 27 November 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Those quotes are just gone.

"Just imagine a young man turning up in his unit and being made to wrestle naked in a field while his non-commissioned officers are dressed up in women's frillies. I mean, it's not very dignified stuff, is it?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 November 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

i want to see this video!

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 27 November 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Ralph Ellison to thread!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 27 November 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Nice, how can I join?

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 27 November 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

"No hidden weapons, duh."

But they were PROBED!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Sunday, 27 November 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

wait i thought this was how everyone was initiated into ILX!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 27 November 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

No, just you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 November 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Who was I nude fighting with then?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 27 November 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

It's amazing what mirrors can do.

The response from non-military people seems to be "what the fuck?!". The response from anyone I know who's even vaguelly familiar with the military and the marines in particular (there are several marine barracks round here) is "why the fuss?".

I personally would not like to be stripped naked and made to fight another human being in a field by a fancy-dressed superior who then drop-kicks me unconscious. But then I don't want and never have wanted to be a marine. They all seem to be (broadly) enjoying themselves in the video... What do we expect marines to do in their sparetime, play chess? It's very odd.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 28 November 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

The fight appears to have been "directed" by two non-commissioned officers. One was dressed in a surgeon's outfit, the other dressed as a schoolgirl.

I know people who would pay good money to see this sort of thing. Ha-HEM.

Please Snap StressTwig (kate), Monday, 28 November 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

It's only one step up from the type of university-rugby-team initiations you used to see on campus every week at the start of the academic year, running naked round the field in the freezing cold while second years kick rugby balls at you.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 28 November 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

who says they were 'forced'?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 28 November 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

That's exactly it - they don't look forced. They look as if they enjoy getting naked and slapping the shit out of each other. Which, if you've ever seen marines out on the town in Exeter, shoudln't come as any surprise.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 28 November 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

slapping the shit out of each other

I'm trying not to take this too literally.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Monday, 28 November 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

So are they.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 28 November 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

i wasn't surprised at all, tbh.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 28 November 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

isn't all this covered by 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'?

koogs (koogs), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

i don't believe i care at all about any of this. Didn't the guy who was knocked out say that he's not taking any further action against the officer because he knew it was all just larfs, or words similar.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

it's typical that this captures more front pages than any of the deep cut stuff.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Henry OTM.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Well, marines only mate once every seven years, and before they can they must return to their home planets and fight to the death.

How is this any worse than being killed?

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Or woken up at 5am EVERY DAY.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

jessies

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Dear lord accentmonkey...

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Could someone put commas in there or something?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

No no, looks fine to me. Carry on.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Grand, so long as it's been approved.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Could someone put commas in there or something?

Dear lord accentmonkey, [...]

Dan (Helping You Out) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Sorry but no. It was really meant to read like: Good Lord, Accentmonkey?! In shock and surprise at the joke.

Thanks for trying though.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

naked men are funny!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 28 November 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Naked men

Rumpie, Monday, 28 November 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I know this whole bullying/initiaton thing is serious, but was I the only person who saw that video (albeit with strategically-placed pixellations) on the news and thought it was kinda hott?

C J (C J), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Not if Drew and Lex's posts were any indication.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

The response from anyone I know who's even vaguelly familiar with the military and the marines in particular (there are several marine barracks round here) is "why the fuss?"

OTM. This event sounds like the Marines are developing a variant of the Navy's "crossing the equator" ritual/pervefest.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking "lucky at least there's a doctor on hand if anyone gets hurt".

But then someone did.

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 28 November 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

Being forced to strip naked and fight one another? DUD
