im wondering if theres anywhere in london you can pay for less than about a 100 a week? it seems from whitechapel to brixton, youre paying the same amount. its a little annoying.

I pay 350 a month and I'm about 3 minutes from waterloo station. I'm lucky though.

Fuck me! That seems very cheap. Do you live on your own or share a flat?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Sunday, 27 November 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

nah, you can definitely get places for less than that! where are you looking? there are plenty on gumtree right now for £80-90 a week, some including bills. my rent is just over £80 a week and i've got a big room in a nice house with a garden in hackney. one of my housemates has the small room and hers is £65 a week i think, if you don't need a lot of space you should be able to get something for about that. look in places that haven't got a tube and it gets significantly cheaper.

looked on gumtree, south of the river for 2 bedroom flat - its about the same price

blankard, Sunday, 27 November 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

same price as what?

"Pleasant family house. Please send some background"

What does this mean? Potted bio? Is this just "please be middle class" or "please don't be creepy" or what?

(three years ago my then-girlfriend and two ghastly others paid 240 each to live four minutes from Archway tube, pretty big rooms but one tiny corridor) (they did have to look pretty hard for it though, it was basically a 2br with one of them converting the living room)

In my experience you can live wherever the heck you want in London, all it takes is time and some tenacity on your part, unfortunately time is often an issue as most people have to give 1 months notice (2 at a push) when moving from place to place.
I've found great places in the past that were in high bracket/posh/central areas and affordable, but only when I've had the luxury of time.

I am moving to London for a year in the summer. What kind of rent should I expect to pay? I think it will be around the Mile End area - what would I be likely to get for around 100 a week?

Have you heard the Pulp song 'Mile End'?

Worth having a look at Gumtree to get an idea of current rent levels in London.

also moveflat.com. i've lived in mile end/bow/bethnal green for the best part of a decade and have only just started paying more than £100pw for a decent-sized room in a nice house.

CharlieNo4, Sunday, 6 April 2008 12:34 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah you'll easily find something for that money.

Matt DC, Sunday, 6 April 2008 13:05 (seventeen years ago)

Sharing a house is the key, 1/2 bed flats are a ripoff.

Bodrick III, Sunday, 6 April 2008 13:10 (seventeen years ago)

I pay £433 a month for a big-enough room in a room in a massive house in the posh bit of Mile End.

One of my housemates just moved out and we had at least a dozen people call up about her room over about three days.
