Suburban Kids With Biblical Names

I mean.... really? You're making that up!

Please post other band names (real bands only please) that you thought your mates made up to take the piss.

(OK, maybe this should be on ILM, but I would prefer silly answer to serious ones.)

StressTwig (kate), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

A few weeks ago, someone accused me of making up The Victorian English Gentlemens Club.

StressTwig (kate), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

Clap your hands, say Yeah!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, yes. First time someone mentioned them, I did what was asked, then felt like an idiot.

Please Snap StressTwig (kate), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

That would have been mine, too. Good name, though.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

do you know you're getting young when you keep seeing combinations of words and thinking "hm, aren't they playing at the bull & gate next tuesday?" (it is always the bull & gate.)

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

I do that, too. Getting on the Thameslink, you see "Press When Illuminated" and think "aren't they playing at the B&G next week?"

Ha ha, remember when we used to play the "Bull and Gate Band of the Week Game"?

I think that's just a sign you've lived in London too long.

Please Snap StressTwig (kate), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

Kelley Polar. This obv means I should check ILM a bit more cause there's a mile long thread on him. :-( It just sounded so... fake. Like an obscure exotic shampoo.

Suburban Kids With Biblical Names is a David Berman (Silver Jews) lyric.

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Clap your hands, say Yeah!

My aunt thinks she's all cool because she read about them in the New York Times. At Thanksgiving she said to my 17-year-old cousin, "John's band played with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!" Blank stare. "They're a new band, a new very hip band right now." "Really," I said, "they're not all that popular."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

One day someone will actually start a band called Support TBC.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Well, your Aunt heard of them a few days before I did...

"not all that popular" = crap?? Just curious.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Ah, I kinda like them. I was just embarrassed.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Well, they *are* crap, but that implication does not always hold. xpost

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm so desperately unhip that I don't know what they sound like. I have a cool friend who..uh...likes bands and stuff..and HE likes them, though..

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Don't buy the hype; you're the cool one, hobart.

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

How about that band called "You be Nice to Your Aunt, Jaymc, Someday You'll Be Old, Too."

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

After a wave of "The XXXXs" bands, is the new trend to invent as weird as possible band names? Death Cab for Cutie? Clap Your Hands Say Yeah? Death From Above 1979? !!!? What the fuck?!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

FUN FACTS!

Death Cab for Cutie was named after a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, which appeared in Magical Mystery Tour.

Death From Above 1979 was once simply Death From Above, until they were sued by the production team DFA (the fellows behind the Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, etc.) and were forced to change their name. They appended the birth year of their frontman.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

NEW TREND! "The Strawberry Alarm Clock"! "Moby Grape"! "Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart"! NEW TREND!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

What about that band called "Courtney Love"? They presumably got a cease/desist letter eventually.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Okay, a reborn trend!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Band names should either be colors, numbers or representations of geometric standards of perfection.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

NEW TREND! All band names to be irrational numbers and/or punctuation marks.

Amity Wong (noodle vague), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

ITEM!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Actually, back in the nineties my friends had a band called Hey Girls, Smell My Hand, It's Got Dog Piss And Human Shit On It. The name came from something a random drunk once said to us.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

THERAPY?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

I like that name! But was it in Finnish?

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Hei Tytöt, Haistakaa Mun Kättä, Siinä On Koiran Kusta Ja Ihmisen Paskaa. More briefly known as HTHMKSOKKJIP.

ROFFLEMAO :D

Death Cab For Cutie have been around for like six years though, before all the XXXX bands, so it's not new. It might have inspired the other names though

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Psychic Paramount and Birds of Delay on the 6th...

-- Mestema (mrdavewhit...), November 29th, 2005 3:07 PM. (davidcorp) (later)

I rest my case.

Band names should either be colors, numbers or representations of geometric standards of perfection.

Why thank you!

Shimura Curve Multi Dimensional Torus Of Perfection (kate), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

I'm writing a song named after a color....

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

A band called People played here, and I was confused for days because I'd hear snippets of conversation like "he really hates People," or "I know it's weird, but I like People."

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

THERAPY?

No thanks, I'll solve my problems on my own.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Double Leopards.

Mattattack (matt attack), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

Back in high school we were trying to out do each other with wacky indie/new wave band names we knew and this quiet, nerdy, not at all trendy guy who no one liked came up with People with Chairs up their Noses. We scoffed at him for making it up. Then I found out they existed and that made him More Punk than any of us and I felt stupid.
