is there any justification?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I used to wear waistcoats, in the early nineties...before I had breasts....now they just look plain silly....

smee (smee), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

now they just look plain silly....

and they didn't before?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

yeah this was inspired by a woman at work wearing one, rather than the 'fusty aristo' look. she looks like someone in a c&c music factory video.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

OK, to re-phrase...they look EVEN SILLER with breasts, waistcoats are for victorian men...

smee (smee), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

VEry good in the winter. I've never worn one though. I may hire one as part of my dinner suit for this weekend's office XMAS party.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

I love the fusty aristo look! I wish more men would wear waistcoats...you're right though, there's something distinctly silly and early 90s about women wearing them.

Lars and Jagger (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

There is justification when they are worn by men, in certain circumstances. By women, NEVER. I used to favour loose velvet ones with 'ethnic' mirrors in arrrgh I almost bit my hand off just seeing it type the words. I blame Blossom (as usual).

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I wear them relatively often.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

But I won't justify the practice. It's just something I do.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Damn. I used to love them, but I've stopped. Ah, we all wore them during the 90s, it was OK. My favourite was suede and paisley. How I loved it...

On men, they should only really be worn as part of a suit. Otherwise it's a bit... Fabio.

Are we talking about vests? The Strokes caused a minor resurgence, didn't they?

Waistcoats and bow ties. Under NO circumstances ever should either be worn. Especially bow ties.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

I like to wear a bowtie and waistcoat when I eat ice cream by myself on the street.

elmo (allocryptic), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

You and I need to have a little chat.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I have a waistcoat. It is plain black and Iike it, even though I know this makes me a fashion victim. Sigh.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Boy, am I in trouble.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Especially if you eat ice cream on the street as well.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Don't eat much ice cream. I'm hoping for a suspended sentence.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

I think I was wearing a waistcoat when I met Ned.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

I prefer wainscots.

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Bit heavy, though, no Aimless?

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

No more so than a coat of mail, and ever so decorative.

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

- they provide extra pockets for e.g. keys/pocket-watch/change for the bus/hooking yr thumbs into before saying 'now, young fella-me-lad...'

- they stop yr tie falling into soup, or getting blown over yr shoulder by strong winds

- they may provide some shelter to the ribs from icy gusts

- they allow you to feel old in not too bad a way

- they provide more info/ammo on which to make value judgements about ppl based on their appearance/aesthetics

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

I am wearing one today! I think it might be a boys' waistcoat, it is dark red with some kind of black woven design. Thrifted it.. it's pretty well made though, like formal wear maybe. It seemed like a good idea this morning.
