Fillmore Jive, or: prescribe something that'll help me sleep which isn't sleeping pills

My dad went on sleeping pills and got the fucked-up nightmare treatment. Most drowsy drugs I've ever taken have given me the same, so I figure I'd be best to stay away from sleeping pills if I can.

And yet, I can't sleep. It's worst during stress periods, but I pretty regularly toss about for a couple hours before nodding off, and I regularly wake up for a while in the middle of the night. It feels like I can't switch my brain off. Is this normal? Is there anything that'll help?

Passed out on your couch
You left me there (thank you)
Let me sleep it off
I need to sleep it off
I need to sleep why don't you let me
I need to sleep why don't you
I need to sleep
I need to sleep
I need to sleep
I need to sleep, why won't you let me
I need to sleep
I need to sleep
I need to sleep
Why won't you, why won't you let me sleep?

I think sometimes when you reach a certain point of tossing & turning and you're about to give up hope of ever dropping off to sleep, it can be a good idea to get out of bed, turn on the lights, get a glass of water, go sit in your favorite chair (don't get back in bed, this is key), and read a book for a while. Eventually, you will start to feel sleepy. At that point, go get back in bed and try again.

go for a brisk walk in the evening, thirty to forty-five minutes. when i get to the tossing-and-turning point, i get up and do stretches for ten or fifteen minutes. usually works, because not being able to sleep (especially when i have to get up for something) makes me tense up.

I used to keep a copy of Das Kapital at my bedside for just this purpose.

Verveine or Teilleul Tea, very pleasantly soporiphic. Valerian if you want to get hard core.

I recommend reading a treatise on the interrelation of the gift and estate taxes. It never fails to put me to sleep, and I've got an exam in a week!

a nice, hot bath. and a blowjob.

failing that, beat off.

geoff (gcannon), Thursday, 1 December 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

OK, so here's the plan, then. First, a quick jog. Second, a nice warm bath. Then, sip some sleepytime tea while receiving a blowjob and simultaneously beating off. Once that's finished, I'll dive into Marx.

Just lie down and get comfortable, but create a reason for needing to get up in about 20 minutes, e.g., having to get clothes from the dryer.
