TV writers squeezing in references to popular culture to make characters seem down with the kids - C/D

So I was flicking through the TV stations and came across Holby City (incidentally starring at least three ex-Brookside cast members and one ex-EastEnder so far) and two young-ish characters were chatting.

Character A : *listening to ipod*
Character B : "Let me guess, "Darts of Pleasure" by Franz Ferdinand?
Character A : "Yes, they're great, do you like them?"
Character B : "I saw them supporting the Libertines once"
Character A : "Oh wow cool"

Me: "roffle"

This reminds me of the time once in Brookside when proto-chav hairdresser Jacqui Dixon and dull Katie Rogers were all excited because they were going to see Poisoned Electrick Head. Or Mike and Keith's ill-fated indie night at "La Luz" (also Brookside) - "we'll start with The Frank & Walters then play some Sultans of Ping, yes?" (or something, I can't remember the details, but I definitely remember the Poisoned Electrick Head one because it so smacked off the writer opening the NME and picking a random band off the listings page).

Has anyone ever succeeded in making a character sound like someone you would like by doing this sort of thing?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

remember the night court where bull lost his copy of atomizer?

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Seth Cohen just blushed and ran out the back. I thought, "Excellent, now the Bilson can be MINE"

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

There was a scene on elderly Lucille Ball's last sitcom (c. 1986) where she entered in jogging suit and Walkman. "What are you listening to Grandma?" brought "the Rhythm Pigs" from Lucy. But then, that was a joke.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Another involving Jacqui Dixon & Katie Rogers - standing outside their hair salon considering what to name it: Katie - "let's call it The Style Council" Jacqui "yeh, the we can get Paul Weller to open it, he's a dish".

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

I recall an episode of Major Dad where it was revealed the teenage daughter was an REM fan. I was big into them at the time and found it curious. Didn't make me like her character or the show any better.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

I think Tony took Alyssa Milano to a Beastie Boys concert on Who's the Boss.

Have FF ever supported the Thieving Junkie Twat's ex-band?

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Twenty-five years later, and I'm still trying to work out why Rerun was trying to bootleg the Doobie Brothers.

any episode of Fame where one of the students incorporates some pop or street element into his or her routine and the uptight instructor is at first bummed but is brought around by the end of the episode.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

That wasn't every episode of "Fame"?

Dan (This Was Practically Leroy's Entire Story Arc) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I swear I saw some cop/lawyer show in the early (but not that early) 90s where a guy who had brought this woman to his apartment asked her what she wanted to listen to and she answered "Do you have any Seattle sound?"

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Have FF ever supported the Thieving Junkie Twat's ex-band?

I figured not, as I don't think your average Holby City fan is going to worry about the finer details, but FF and the Libertines are just famous enough in cosy-drama-viewing world that they can feel like they've got the reference that shows that these are "cool" and "with-it" characters.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

I remember the Rhythm Pigs... were they from Napa or somewhere?

I remember Poisoned Electrick Head! They were like a proto Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

Chris-Lowe-On-Neighbours to thread!

Chris: 'scuse me, can you tell me 'ow to get to the recordin' studio?
Helen Daniels: Yes, it's just down there...[points]

Helen: [shrug]

Whole Saved By the Bell episode revolving around them camping out to get tickets to see U2 as well.

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Thursday, 1 December 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

The thing is that soap operas are so resolutely out of touch with anything that might remotely resemble reality that whenever they drop a topical reference it clunks so hard the echoes go on for half an hour.

Now let's sneer at the Friends/Hootie love-in.

Amity Wong (noodle vague), Thursday, 1 December 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

And then on the other hand there's the horror of the Made-Up group/football team/TV programme reference. The rules state that:

a) If it's a band, they have to dress like a timid Sigue Sigue Sputnik and be called something like Fungus and the Bogeymen - even in 2005

b) If it's a football team, they have to be a mash-up of 2 existing football teams - "Come on Everpool!"

c) Don't introduce a programme called The Magic Rabbits that is clearly better written and acted than the awful soap opera around it

Amity Wong (noodle vague), Thursday, 1 December 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

I vaguely rememeber someone in Prisoner: Cell Block H being a big Boy George fan and the 'script' 'writers' put in a whole conversation about whether or not he was a boy or girl. Or maybe gay or straight.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Like anybody in Prisoner would be confused about Boy George's sexuality.

Amity Wong (noodle vague), Thursday, 1 December 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Everpool! roffle.

In Sly Stallone arm-wrestling flick "Over The Top", Sly gives his errant son a Talking Heads album to try to make him like him.

Oh, and I mentioned elsewhere that thing in T4 girlrock soap "Totally Frank" with one of the girls only aallowing some bloke to shag her if he could name her favourite Joy Division track, right?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 1 December 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

The Corrie Goths were particularly roffle-worthy.

In the made-for-bigscreen TV show 'Ten Things I Hate About You' .. "OMG, You like the Raincoats?" In that context, it almost sounded like they had made up the name of the band, the dialogue was so fake.

.. When The Strawberry Alarm Clock was on The Beverly Hillbillies, it was pandering to the kids, but somehow it worked.

Sailor Kitten (g-kit), Thursday, 1 December 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

There is a Simpsons episode where the Red Hot Chilli Peppers turn up! They could not even get the real Red Hot Chilli Peppers to play them. They got some yellow dudes instead.

It's not just TV either - The Archers to thread . . .

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Thursday, 1 December 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

'peep show' was maybe riffing on this trope wehn jez said 'it's not just you and tony soprano and jamie theakston [who have therapy], mark'. it just seemed so crowbarred in it must have been deliberate.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 1 December 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, ooh, and also an episode of Clueless (the series) which had a subplot which involved a whole classroom full of kids on mobiles trying to get through to the Oasis ticketline...

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

which was funnier in corrie, the goths, or Status Quo actually turning up in several episodes?

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Mogwai fetaured in a Neighbours plotline, I think.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Candice leave the street to become the Quo's tour hairdresser?

Bidfurd (Bidfurd), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

D.I.Y., I think the conversation went something like this:

Julia Stiles: (derisively, in middle of womyn-filled riot grrl all-ages venue where she didn’t expect to encounter Heath Ledger) “Enjoying yourself?”
Heath Ledger: (causally but clearly just dropping names) “They’re no Bikini Kill or Raincoats, but they’re pretty good.”

The Cosby Show owns this thread, no (in terms of real-life pop stars showing up)? And wasn’t there an episode where Vanessa and her friends were all about Kylie’s “Locomotion” and they went to a studio and sang it?

HA HA and a plot thread running through an episode of Family Ties concerning an oh-so-cool Duran Duran watch Justine Bateman acquired.....

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

I wanted that watch!

Lars and Jagger (Ex Leon), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Oooh - Family Ties - When Alex went on his barbituates bender, Justine said something about him being all weird lately and listening to "Jim Morrison and the Doors"...

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Sabrina the Teenage Witch (TV Edition) went to a Violent Femmes concert. In the mid/late 90s.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Sabrina clearly rocks the big one.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

clarissa nirvana and pearl jam were different episodes k thx bye

Sailor Kitten (g-kit), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

There were two very similar epsiodes, one where Clarissa wanted to see Nirvana, and one where she wanted to see Pearl Jam. Also, her parents really dug Arrested Developement.

explains.it.all, Thursday, 1 December 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 1 December 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Both Melissa Joan Hart.

I miss those preview shows.

kingfish crab trampycakes (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 3 December 2005 05:21 (twenty years ago)

Remember Marsha Brady meeting Davey Jones? "I'll never wash this hand again"...

The Entourage episode that ended at the U2 concert really sucked.

Gilmore Girls writers have lately been adding overt DVD/Theatrical releases into conversations, ie " see them all marching around like penguins", or "sure, it's not Mad Hot Ballroom..." -- lame, lame lame.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 3 December 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

In the first couple of seasons of CSI(Vegas), they always used to discuss Greg the lab rat's taste in music - usually Radiohead/Aphex Twin/Marilyn Manson.

Roz (Roz), Saturday, 3 December 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

There was a good Curb Your Enthusiasm episode that ended with Larry David going to a U2 concert with an acquaintance's mother. Obviously that had nothing to do with "seeming down with the kids."

31g (31g), Saturday, 3 December 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

CSI always played stuff like Radiohead too tho, and it never felt forced, I think. I liked it.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 3 December 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

LOTS of bands played the Peach Pit After Dark.

scout (scout), Saturday, 3 December 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

CSI always played stuff like Radiohead too tho, and it never felt forced, I think. I liked it.

Yeah for the most part, I liked it too (but then again, I like Greg a lot). Except for one episode where the conversation went something like this:

Warrick (to Greg who's wearing headphones): Hey Greg!
*Greg takes off headphones*
Warrick: Let me guess? Radiohead?
Greg: Nope. Audiobook. Restriction enzyme analysis in DNA typing.

... which felt kinda laboured in the "Look, he might be coolest guy in this team, but he's still a geek.." sort of way.

Roz (Roz), Saturday, 3 December 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

Heh yeah. But agreed on the Greg being hot thing!

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 3 December 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

Uh, "Gilmore Girls" is full of pop-cult references.

And those yellow dudes really were the Chili Peppers. They all caught hep from sharing needles, man.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 3 December 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

haha i LOVE it when scriptwriters do this, it's always so shit and fake and hilarious. it gladdens my heart. but are they trying to fuck with my head when soaps shoehorn in references to other soaps? i once saw a bit of brookside where one of the characters went "i'm not wearing that - who d'you think i am, peggy mitchell?" AAAAARRRRRGGHHHH

How many TV shows have featured U2 concerts?? Incredible.

I wonder which band/artist has had the highest saturation?

Also, a couple of obvious ones - the introduction of the Baitshop for session two of The O.C. as a platform for new 'alternative', Cohen approved rock - The Killers, Modest Mouse, the Walkmen. (but that said, this was a huge improvement over 'Rooney' for the first series).

Also, the last session of Dawson's Creek had a featured episode around going to a No Doubt concert.

BTW - was there ever any famous bands that played the Bronze?

Mika, Sunday, 4 December 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

I know they had The Breeders, Aimee Mann, and Cibo Matto. Aimee Mann got to speak, and there was a whole conversation about the fact that Cibo Matto was playing.

four months pass...
Revive for tonight's EastEnders. Little Mo pops in to see straight-laced and dullsville new doctor. He has headphones on and is drumming on the desk with his pencil singing "I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor".

Him: "Oh, sorry, catching up with Arctic Monkeys, do you like them?"
Her: "No, I'm not that into wildlife" (haha, do you see what they did there?)
Him: "No, they're a band, they're really big. I can lend you some CDs"

This bloke looks and acts like James Blunt would be a bit outre for him. What exactly are the scriptwriters trying to prove about his character?

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, it's my thread title! I just wondered why the Arctic Monkeys. The doctor doesn't look like he would like the Arctic Monkeys, and I thought, you know, Keane or Coldplay or Embrace or something would be more his cup of tea. If you know what the Arctic Monkeys are about, and who they appeal to, you wouldn't peg the doc as being a fan, would you? Scriptwriters be clueless!

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

"catching up with Arctic Monkeys"???

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

All the people I know who like the Arctic Monkeys are among the most straight-laced imaginable. I didn't think this would be in the slightest bit unusual. Lame, maybe, but not unusual.

Not like the time they mentioned Mogwai on Neighbours.

I know loads of people who like Arctic Monkeys, and they are all in their mid-thirties. Me, for instance. And Mister Monkey, and our housemates. They're sweet, with the jumping up and down and all. And the tunes are catchy. I wasn't surprised that the doctor would like them. He's too young for Mo, though.

Most bizarre clip played: I remember once hearing "The Jeweller" by This Mortal Coil being played in the Queen Vic, just after Filligree & Shadow had come out.

I think the earliest one I remember is Seaview, a BBC children's sitcom from the early 80s that starred Yvette Fielding. Yes, I know, I'm probably the only one. Anyway, despite the whole heavy metal band sub-plot, one episode centres around how Yvette can go and see the Human League without her parents finding out.

In fact, CSI: NY even managed to squeeze a mention of the British fox hunting ban into its first series. Which is not exactly a pop-culture reference, but still shows the writers are actually human beings.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 07:25 (nineteen years ago)

Home To Roost starring John Thaw and strangely omitted from all his obituraries pwns this thread, viz.:-

Cue hysterical (presumably canned) laughter.

Stone Temple Pilots was the must-see band on an episode of The Nanny - Mr. Sheffield blanched at the song titles "Sex Type Thing" and "Dead and Bloated" (how quaint).

I also remember an Ellen episode where the gang went to see Liz Phair, roughly Whip Smart era.

A band called XYZ Crew (or something), who are, as they tried to explain to a bemused Peggy Mitchell, "grime with a bit of hip-hop". Apparently this band have a big following who would all come and see them live. In the Queen Vic. On a Thursday. Hooray.
