Rolling London Home Furnishings Orgy

So as I'm buying a house next week, I've suddenly got TEH PH34R as I realise I don't have a stick of furniture in this country!

I've made a philosophical/aesthetic decision to have an Ikea Free Home. (Yes, I know this may be controversial, but it's my decision because I'm sick of living with Swedish semi-disposable furniture.)

But still! Tell me what I'll need! Tell me where to buy a bed! A sofa (preferably sofabed)! Bookshelves! Dining Room Table! Desk for my mixing board! Hoover! Ironing Board! Curtains! Etc!

For the time being, I think I'm going to get stuff at Oxfam and paint it jolly colours until I save up for real furniture. It's worth spending the money to get a decent bed, but what about everything else? I've read that Brown Furniture isn't fashionable right now, so I might be able to pick up bargains antiqueing.

Let's be as middle class as possible and talk about where to get good deals and good value on furniture!

New "she's so common she had to buy her own furniture" answers now!

Theres a salvation army place in wandsworth that specialises in furniture.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 1 December 2005 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, we have a furniture Oxfam at the top of Streatham Hill which is what gave me the idea.

I think a bed/mattress is the only thing I wouldn't buy second hand, but if I can't have lovely brown furniture and proper antiques, then I want mismatched things painted jolly colours. I'm still sad I didn't buy the harmonium when I first saw it there.

If you have carpets, and need Hoover, then Richer Sounds are knocking out a great one for 25 quids. I commend your anti-IKEA stance. Argos is cheaper anyway.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 1 December 2005 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

Ohmigod, I'm going to need carpets, too! Argh! I hate the one in the bedroom, I'm going to have to cover it. But I might see if I can get my mum to carpet trade me some deals with her pushers carpet traders in Khabul.

But I need a hoover even before I get proper carpets becuase it's great stress release hoovering. Or at least, that's what Iggy said.

does iggy hoover shirtless in tight trousers?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 1 December 2005 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

No. In 3 Stooges pyjama bottoms.

(I wish I didn't know this.)

I take it we're talking curly, larry and moe here.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 1 December 2005 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

I know, because I've seen them. (But not often.)

Anyway! I will refuse to allow this thread to derail into discussion of Iggy's pyjamas! Let's talk about curtains, people! And where I can get good deals on Persian Carpets!

So where's a good place to buy a bed? Should I go to the weird "Dreamland" shop on Streatham High Street (even though I'm kind of scared by their weird marble swan bed creations) or should I go up to John Lewis, or buy some funky seconds thing from a local liquidation place? (Though I'm terrified that would have a second hand matress sprayed with Fabreeze, ugh.)

argos has the cheapest non-ikea beds i've seen, and they do hoovers really cheaply as well. actually, they do everything really cheaply. ikea does have good (and good value) throw rugs, though, so i'd reconsider the ban.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

I hate Ikea's throw rugs, seriously, I just think they're horrible. I'd rather get some cheap kilims at the Middle Eastern shop on the high street.

Control your ponies, children! (kate), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

well, there's your rug problem solved then.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 1 December 2005 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

Yay! H just said that she would lend me her vast collection of decorating magazines to give me ideas. Now if I can just persuade her to come to John Lewis or Streatham Dreamland with me to bounce up and down on the beds to figure out which one is comfiest!

there is a weird second hand furniture shop on the junction (almost) of coldharbour lane and railton road that sometimes has interesting art deco looking chairs at not ridiculous prices. you could combine that with a visit to the nearby brixton argos (DO NOT ON ANY ACCOUNT ATTEMPT THIS AT THE WEEKEND)

barbarian cities (jaybob3005), Friday, 2 December 2005 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

I know that shop, I've passed it!

I'm not going to any shops this weekend - not until after Christmas, I'm not going near anything. (Plus, we've got an Argoose in Streatham, anyway.)
