Rolf Harris: Cool or Fool

He's a comedian! No, he's a musician! Ah no, he's an actor! Hang on, he's a cartoonist! No wait, he's a TV presenter!

So what do you think of everyone's favourite multi-talented antipodean piss-drinker? What's the best thing he's done? Do you have him in America? Or even Australia? Is there anyone at all similar?

Graham, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

He's known only vaguely at best here, maybe "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport" here and there. First I ever heard of him was an old _Goonies_ show repeat about capturing all the Rolf Harrises loose in nature and putting them together for their own protection.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ned you mean "The Goodies". That was a real good Goodies ep. too so he's COOL just 'cause of that.

duane, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

_The Goodies_, quite right. I was confusing the title with that damn mid-eighties movie.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The Goonies was a great movie!

Mike Hanley, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"Piss Drinker"?

I always enjoyed RH's cartoon time admittedly for the cartoons rather than RH's shakyhand can-you-see-what-it-is-yet stuff. He was a bit too keen on the sentimental ones though. RH's animal hospital stuff I can take or leave. RH's music is wankchops, especially "Stairway To Heaven", surely the Nadir of Human Novelty Culture. Though more shocking yet was the revelation that this came off an Australian show whose only point was that somebody did a cover of "Stairway To Heaven" each week, and you could buy compilation albums of the results.

Tom, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

FOOL: his contribution to world music is the wobble board his contribution to world comedy is to walk around on stage with a prosthetoc leg swinging it around (admittedly quite adeptly), singing I'm jake the peg. his contribution to TV is animal hospital he is a budget australian noel edmunds impersonator

Cartoon time was pretty good though although it would have been better without hi you could have fitted in an extra cartoon.

Ed, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

search -rolf and the wobble board playing stairway to heaven.

Geoff, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Rolf's music is *not* "wankchops", Tom! "Sun Arise" is a masterpiece the equal of "To John Coltrane in Heaven" off the 4th Count 5 album. Alice Cooper covered it man, would the Coop hand you poop?

duane, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The advert for milk is a work of genius.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The measure of the genius of Rolf Harris is simple. When Rolf defected to ITV for Rolf's Cartoon Club (and like all ITV defections it was never as good) who did they get in to replace him. Tony Fucking Robinson - who suddenly made all Warner Bros cartoons impossible to watch ever again. So just for that Classic.

And my Mum's favourite record (after Motorcycle Emptimness which she only likes for "Tragic Richey" so doesn't count) is Two Little Boys - so a second hand copy made a really cheap birthday present when i was a student.

Pete, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Rolf = greatest fine artist of our age = saviour of 20th C.Art from the Pit of Modernism, as Kate will surely confirm.
OUR ANDY WARHOL!! Not only could you see make out what the picture WAS OF (f*ck you Mark Rothko),. but he finished it in LESS THAN A MINUTE!!

mark s, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I thought your mum liked that bollocks tune about lonely housewives by Glen Campbell or something?

Rolf Harris..... what was all that face slapping stuff about eh?

Emma, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dud: 'Two Little Boys' by Rolf chosen by M. Thatcher as one of her 'Desert Island Discs' (along with 'Telstar', IIRC.) Dubious 'fact' - Rolf once came top of some 'Name Yr Favourite Painters' poll in UK.

Classic: Rolf's 'Stylophone' 45rpm - "an orchestra the size of a box of chocolates". And his public service swimming films.

Andrew L, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Rolf Harris is one of my hero's...Cartoon Time was brilliant, he's the world's most famous artist!

james e l, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Those kind of polls are always brilliant. I'm waiting for them to do a 'Britain's favourite architect' one and a load of Manics fans to win it for James Dean Bradfield.

Tom, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Tony Robinson is far ace-er because he presents Time Team. I will hear no blasphemy against the Mighty Team.

masonic boom, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Adam Hart-Davis is far cooler than Tony Robinson. He came to our school once (the Robinson character that is) and he was as dull as shit. And he can't draw a Robinsonaroo I dare say.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Best T.Robinson anecdote I know. For a time my sister long-distance dated a Seychelles fisherman named Ned (=possibly sweetest guy I have ever met). He came over to UK one bitter winter. Sat in my flat, miserable. wrapped up superwarm, he was watching TV as Time Team came on. His face lit up: 'BALDROCKS!" he shouted delightedly.

mark s, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Also - check it : I have a genuine Rolf H. stylophone, w/ the little record you're suppose to play along with, all the stuff, in its original box...I'm not a big collector of kitshy crap & toys-their- orig.-boxes & all that happy horseshit but it's rather a prized possession.

duane, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

(sp.- kitschy)

duane, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

There was a stylophone for sale in the Music and Video Exchange a few months ago, it was about £50, I wish I'd bought it.

james e l, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Apparently Adam Ant's "Prince Charming" is a rip-off of Rolf's "Canoe song". Although Rolf ripped that off an old Maori chant.

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

50 pounds? hot damn, that's at least $150 in our worthless toilet paper! finding out that people pay big money for stuff that i've already got r00lz!

duane, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Leave Rolf alone. He's a childhood hero of mine, and my dad's met him and says he's a really nice bloke. And my dad hates everyone.

yo DG *I'm* not bad-rappin yr man. c'mon join me in a rousing chorus of "Sun Arise" here...*sings* *everyone leaves*

"Retro-mania has prompted the return of the Stylophone device to a UK chain.

HMV is bringing back the battery-run pocket organ as part of the 1970s revival. "

I can play "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" on the stylophone.

aldo, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 09:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Don't Let Me Hear It. You couldn't make up Rolf Harris if you tried, his career is truly stranger than fiction.

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 September 2007 09:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Fell in the river.
Didn't know how to swim.
One of his mates jumped in and saved him.

aldo, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 09:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Bringing back the stylophone is a stupid idea. Don't they understand that the reason these things are so rare in mint condition is because everybody else took them out and BROKE THEM AGAINST A WALL because they are rubbish?

That said, I'm all in favour of Rolf Harris, even though I don't really like it when showbiz figures from my childhood start to work blue.

Okay, not blue, but *sweary*. Like one night when I saw David Attenborough on some programme and he said "shit"; I didn't like that.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 09:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Rolf has never been blue!

Tom D., Tuesday, 18 September 2007 09:26 (seventeen years ago) link

i caught something on tv about him recently which ended with him painting uluru in the pouring rain, a kinda retrospective / autobiographical piece. there's a lot to him. and he's enthusiastic.

i seem to remember him doing the doggy paddle (complete with actions), rather than having one of his friends rescue him.

but yes, sounds like a wasp in a tin. (space oddity, orbital, belle and sebastian)

He's a bluddy liar. Wikipedia sez:

As an adolescent and young adult Harris was a champion swimmer being the Australian Junior 110 yards Backstroke Champion in 1946 and Western Australian state champion over a variety of distances and strokes during the period 1948–1952.

CAN'T SWIM MY ARSE.

Mark, that is Rolf's greatest moment, that BOAC ep. "If You've Never Seen San Fransisco" is the best song he ever released. I say this as someone who has way more Rolf records than anyone needs ever.

Plus, it's bloody hard to find.
