extraordinary footage (requires Flash)

He is the greatest player in the world right now so this is his thread for future reference.

Overrated

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Friday, 2 December 2005 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

:o

scotstvo (scotstvo), Friday, 2 December 2005 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

That's not real, is it?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 2 December 2005 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

He's so crap he is hitting the bar every time lol

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 2 December 2005 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

CGI, its like that Michael Vick ad where he throws the ball like 300 yds.

Rotgutt (Rotgutt), Friday, 2 December 2005 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

It had BETTER be CGI.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Friday, 2 December 2005 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, but even if it is cgi we should still all bow down in the wonder at his greasy-haired, buck-toothed mastery.

barbarian cities (jaybob3005), Friday, 2 December 2005 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

and bow down in wonder at the CGI/editing dude too.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 2 December 2005 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

my video card is shit...what exactly is he doing? hitting the goal post?

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Friday, 2 December 2005 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

repeatedly, intentionally, supposedly.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 2 December 2005 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

He's chipping it right onto the bar of the goal so it comes straight back to him every time.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 2 December 2005 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

ah....

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Friday, 2 December 2005 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

I read about this the other week. Apparently it's not real, they just got some bloke to throw him the ball back each time. Still a great player, though.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 2 December 2005 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

It's amazing that the bloke was able to throw the ball back to him that accurately each time!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 2 December 2005 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

Spends more time putting on the shoes than playing with the ball.

Hmmm I've got a sudden irresistable urge to go and buy shoes just like those.

beanz (beanz), Friday, 2 December 2005 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

It's amazing that the bloke was able to throw the ball back to him that accurately each time!

Yes, maybe that would have made a better advert.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 2 December 2005 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

at the end, he kicks it gently behind him but it goes slighty too far, i like that. perhaps it was intentional

neverthless i dont think hes overrated, and i think its quite a hipsterish pose to say otherwise

calderdale in the 70s (gareth), Friday, 2 December 2005 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

to those who think he is overrated: do you just think he is overrated or do you also think there are other footballers who are better?

Lovelace (Lovelace), Friday, 2 December 2005 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

He's no Luca Toni.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 2 December 2005 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

Dadaismus thinks everyone is overrated. I think Ronaldinho is fantastic, possibly the best player I have ever seen.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 2 December 2005 23:24 (nineteen years ago)

White soccer shoes are ugly.

Rotgutt (Rotgutt), Saturday, 3 December 2005 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

There is no player I've seen recently who looks anywhere near as good as Ronaldinho. Except possibly Samuel Eto'o, in which case tough shit anyone who isn't at Barcelona.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 3 December 2005 00:40 (nineteen years ago)

I've never seen Eto'o play. Could somebody outline his strengths for me?

Soledad (nordicskilla), Saturday, 3 December 2005 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

Barcelona wont win he CL though. Their defence is SHIT and they've only played against weak teams recently(yes, Real Madrid is nothing special - their defence is even weaker).

Lovelace (Lovelace), Saturday, 3 December 2005 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

That's not real, is it?

it's clearly barca innit.

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 3 December 2005 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

Barca's defence shit? hmm, bollocks, they have a world x1 central defender in Puyol, a world class full back in Belletti and enough other decent defenders to make them a very solid unit, in fact they have the second best defensive record in Spain behind Sevilla.

And as for claims of Ronaldinho being over-rated Mr Lido is spot on, that's just hipster contrariness.

Porkpie (porkpie), Saturday, 3 December 2005 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

yes, they're pretty strong defensively

ronaldinho is a fkn treat; it's nice to be alive to see someone soar

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
He added: "Henry is a beautiful player and and has got complete technique.

"I adore watching him. I respect him very much as a man and as a footballer. He reminds me of myself."

Ha ha.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 18 December 2005 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

So what's all this about him being a pisshead then?

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 12:46 (seventeen years ago)

He's no Luca Toni.

2005/06 FC Barcelona 2 - 1 Arsenal FC Stade de France

onimo, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 12:57 (seventeen years ago)

I think Ronaldinho is now underrated.

onimo, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 12:59 (seventeen years ago)

Pretty sure that only Japanese schoolgirls and Thai dictators agree with you on that one.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:01 (seventeen years ago)

In the last year or so there's been a lot of "enjoying the good life too much", "a bit fat", "not as good as he was", "place not even guaranteed" type comment on him. He's now probably still in the world's top ten/twenty rather than a stand-out top three player but many (in this case meaning blokes in pubs and British commentators and pundits) see this as somehow meaning he's not that good any more.

He remains one of the best players I've had the pleasure of watching live (though it didn't feel like it at the time, given that he was ripping the piss out of Celtic on every occasion).

onimo, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:06 (seventeen years ago)

Ripping the piss in games that Barcelona failed to win - therein lies the problem

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:08 (seventeen years ago)

a couple of years back he was on another level to any footballer out there. it wasn't even debatable for a while.

if you asked who the best is right now, there'd be at least four or five candidates.

darraghmac, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:10 (seventeen years ago)

It was debatable

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

Messi, Kaka, C.Ronaldo, Kitson, Cannavaro... who else?

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

And yeah, even at his peak (2004?) I'd have taken a couple of players over him for my team.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

Ripping the piss in games that Barcelona failed to win - therein lies the problem

Apart from them winning three of their last four against us...

onimo, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)

About time he proved effective as something other than a circus act

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:18 (seventeen years ago)

i dunno, who exactly would you have taken over him three years ago?

darraghmac, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

apart from kitson

darraghmac, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:25 (seventeen years ago)

European Footballer of the Year 2004 = Andriy Shevchenko!

Wheater

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:38 (seventeen years ago)

matthews, best, fabregas, edwards, beardsley, schmeichel.

point taken, you could debate it, if you really wanted.

darraghmac, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

Fabregas? Beardsley? Schmeichel? What?

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 April 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

What is that a list of?

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 April 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

Fabregas/Beardsley/Schmeichel poll needed

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 14:07 (seventeen years ago)

Aubrey will win it easy

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 April 2008 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

Tom doesn't think that the great Peter Bearsley deserves mentioning alongside fabregas, matthews, bullard.

nothing's sacred.

darraghmac, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

Fabregas isn't _that_ ugly.

fabregas- no ronaldinho, which was my point all along.

darraghmac, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 14:24 (seventeen years ago)

Ronaldinho - no Zidane

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 April 2008 14:24 (seventeen years ago)

zidane's good at headers.

ken c, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

zidane- no jenas

darraghmac, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

although zidane was the last adel taarabt, apparently

darraghmac, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 14:29 (seventeen years ago)

I still think Ronaldinho's transfer fee and wages would qualify him as 'overrated'.

I'd have taken 2004-era Nedved over virtually any player in the world. Except Wayne Rooney during that magical fortnight.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

transfer fees and wages over-rate loads of players tho, esp. in the PL

blueski, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

darren bent to thread

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

bent = 1/2 shevchenko

darraghmac, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

1/2 the wages, 1/8 the player

Tom D., Tuesday, 8 April 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

4/5 the age.

looks terribly slow this season....robinho, ibrahimovic, pato will become their default front 3, r10 will probably be off to turkey or something

ilxinho (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

saddest thing since the last brazilian before rivaldo to be the world's best footballer.

cant believe you sb'd me for that (darraghmac), Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

agree^^ hard to think of another player who made every game as much his show as ronnie at his peak

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:55 (fifteen years ago)

messi is brilliant, and probably more effective but he doesn't have the range of peak ronaldinho- guy could beat you walking and still send you three wrong ways, then hit it from 35 yards. set pieces too.

cant believe you sb'd me for that (darraghmac), Thursday, 14 October 2010 13:58 (fifteen years ago)
