MOVIE TRAILER REMIX

So I keep seeing these revised movie trailers around the internet, including ones for West Side Story, Titanic, and Big at metafilter, and another for Romance of the Jedi at ifilm.

All of these above trailer remixes are somewhat funny, if rather forced, but then last night I find one for The Shining: http://www.ps260.com/molly/SHINING%20FINAL.mov

And damn...that one is really great. Really great. When Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill" starts playing I almost hurt myself with laughter.

But anyway, the trailer remix trend... what's that all about? Seems like it could get old fast, cos really, it's all about doing something completely contrary to the film's true meaning, and would thus be quite predictable.

I still like that "Shining" one, though.

"Shining" is the best one of these I've seen. The one for "Big" isn't as well done, thought it gets points for being a whole lot more sick.

Apparently there are competitions held by various film post societies: recut a well-known film so that it appears to have a different plot & belong to a different genre.

I think the Big one shows a bit too much of Tom Hanks flailing around like a dork for him to really come across as sinister or threatening.

And yeah, "Solsbury Hill" makes the whole thing work.

last night in a car I asked some guy I just met who's an editor "did you see the Shining preview on the internet?" and he said "yeah, so funny, and Solsbury Hill is so perfect!"

I think the funny thing about the Shining one is that it doesn't just go for cross-purposes funnies -- it actually goes far enough to put the obligatory moments of tension into the "Solsbury Hill" portion, so that stuff like Danny running down the halls seems to represent whatever tear-jerky crisis would be in the family-drama genre it's shooting for. Also using Bathtub Lady as a Kiss-of-Fortitude moment is nice.

I started to post this exact same thing to a different thread the other day, but I'm pretty sure I didn't actually submit it. Maybe I did.

Musicwise I was actually maybe less impressed by the Gabriel than by the perfect pegging of that quaint flute-and-oboe shit that I'd never really considered was at the beginning of like every trailer ever, before the strings and/or Meaningful Pop Music come in.

There seem to be three musical/cinematic moments to the trailer:

1) quaint flute-and-oboe quirky tune paired with scenes of the "humorously harried writer" and "wise-beyond-his-years, wise-cracking child".

2) seriously sad piano music accompanied by a single, longer scene of poignant father-son interaction.

3) upbeat and inspiring Peter Gabriel song spliced with scenes of the harried writer getting his act together and learning to live again.

The formula seems so absolutely spot on, eh?

Well yeah, that series of music essentially tells a story, hence the formula. (1) = everything is going along normally, (2) = a crisis/conflict has emerged, (3) = the conflict has led to grand beautiful moments of self-realization and change.
