The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

1) FINALLY MAKING ENOUGH MONEY AT MY FREELANCE WORK THAT I ONLY HAVE TO WORK SATURDAYS AT MY DAY JOB. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

2) Depeche Mode at the Air Canada Center this past Thursday night, which FUCKING RULED even though we were up in the nosebleeds (apologies to Noodles, Grimstitch, and MIR).

3) Sleeping in all this past week due to item 1).

4) Rediscovering home cooking this week, also due to item 1).

5) LADY SOVEREIGN TONIGHT! HUH-FUCKING-ZZAH! I have purchased a new hoodie in anticipation.

6) Nice new bed. Yes, it's an Ikea, but it's our first forreallyrealgrownup's bed with a metal frame and all.

7) Stars' "Reunion". Best bass-and-drums interplay I've heard in forever, and with a slinkiness that you don't always hear in this kind of indie-pop/rock. At least, I don't, but I don't know shit about this kind of music.

8) Finally seeing my father when he crashed at our place a few weeks back. I barely had more than an hour at a time for the man (he was only in town for 5 days), but holy shit, so good to catch up after three years. Dad, I'm really hoping it won't be another three years before I see you again.

9) 'Tings a g'wan: big plans, both musical & non-musical, for the year ahead.

10) Narnia movie forthcoming!!! 'Nuff said.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 3 December 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Ha, Jody, I just went in Book Court a few hours ago with the elletes, but I couldn't really maneuver today so I turned right back around without really looking at anything, never mind getting anything. I would have liked to have gone to that Paula Fox reading earlier this week, though.

k/l (Ken L), Saturday, 3 December 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

i was also in book court a few hours ago! we probably just missed each other.

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

6) Nice new bed. Yes, it's an Ikea, but it's our first forreallyrealgrownup's bed with a metal frame and all.

i would love a real bed again. i'm through with junky futons.

Thanks Kim!

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 3 December 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

haha daniel_rf i have that comp on my computer! i love it because it has "only to other people" by the cookies!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Saturday, 3 December 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

i looked at the track listing of that and realized i owned like 80 percent of it already. :-P

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

do you want a medal?

dabnis coleman's ghost (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 3 December 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

YES

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

i just mean, ya know, these songs have been anthologized in many places for a long time now... why are people acting like this set is a big deal?

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

uh because i got it for free on the internet

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Saturday, 3 December 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

I love "Motel Blues."

youn, Saturday, 3 December 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

uh because i got it for free on the internet

just like you can get all the other sets free on the internet!

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

why does this matter? i was just sharing the joy. i'm not saying it's like the best compilation i've ever heard in my life. stop raining on my parade

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Saturday, 3 December 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

fair enough

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

it's just the "lost and found" part of the title that bothers me, because the bulk of this stuff hasn't been "lost" for a long time, and the anthologizers aren't the ones that "found" it.

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

haha daniel_rf i have that comp on my computer! i love it because it has "only to other people" by the cookies!

That's a great tune. They're all great tunes! Right now I'm crazy about "When You're Young And In Love".

You do realise, tho, that by only owning it on yer comp, you're missing out on this packaging?

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000B5KRV6.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

it's just the "lost and found" part of the title that bothers me, because the bulk of this stuff hasn't been "lost" for a long time, and the anthologizers aren't the ones that "found" it.

Rhino box sets have always been digest versions of other compiler's efforts tho, no? I mean, surely Freakbeat collectors were just as blasé about "Nuggets 2", Rockabilly fanatics about that 50's box, etc.?

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 3 December 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

a "fanatic" will hunt down the original singles on 45.

a "fan" will have some compilations.

i never said i was a fanatic.

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

the packaging's ok, but if i go to the goodwill i can find a hat box that looks like that and it'll only be $3.

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

I mean mostly I think it's always a good thing when there's one big high-profile box set for newcomers to test out whether they like the sub-genre or not. I mean, they can always purchase the other comps afterwards if they want more. And while those singles maybe weren't "lost" to serious Girl Group fans, they surely were to a much larger, more casual fanbase.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 3 December 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

remove one stick from ass

dabnis coleman's ghost (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 3 December 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

eh, i've always been somewhat distrustful of the "digest version" approach to life, and i'm not even a super-trainspotter or anything. it's not like i'm being pissy because i found all the original pressings in a box on the side of the road when i was in kindergarten and THESE NEWBIES WANT TO TAKE MY "I WAS THERE" MOMENT AWAY FROM ME.

oh dabnis, you're one to talk.

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

anyway i gotta go now, or something.

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

Bessie Banks, right? Although for a long time, I only knew the Denny Laine version.

k/l (Ken L), Saturday, 3 December 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

I am getting that box set in three days!

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Saturday, 3 December 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

if i go to the goodwill i can find a hat box that looks like that
In keeping with the Downtown Brooklyn Appreciation Meme, I was going to suggest you look no further than the St. Chas Jubilee Thrift Store, but I don't know if that place is open to the general public.

2) Depeche Mode at the Air Canada Center this past Thursday night, which FUCKING RULED even though we were up in the nosebleeds (apologies to Noodles, Grimstitch, and MIR).

We were close to the top row, but the view was great. Most of the seats on our level were a lot further from the stage than we were. I'm pretty sure that's the closest I've ever sat from the band!

In stark contrast to my panicked November fucking ten (written like ten days ago):

10) SLEEPING IN

We were close to the top row, but the view was great. Most of the seats on our level were a lot further from the stage than we were. I'm pretty sure that's the closest I've ever sat from the band!

And the crowd in our section was GREAT -- very energetic. That's so important (this is my addendum to #2).

Nathalie, I have acid reflux, low blood pressure and am hypoglycemic. Mornings are miserable for me.

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I have low blood pressure as well. Is that correlated with your acid reflux. I mean, your AR, not mine of course because my acid reflux is due to pregnancy. :-) IT SUCKS. Night time is worst. :-(((

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

i have acid reflux + hypoglycemia too!!
