Mac Tiger Question. Help Please!

Mac OS 10.4.2 Tiger:

AOL AIM/iChat causes my DSL modem (ZyXEL Prestige 645M) to restart when another Mac user sends me a regular IM message. Using "chat" (instead of IM) causes no such problem.

I've tried disabling my Mac OS firewall, and changing both my IM and my firewall ports as suggested by a related tech document, but neither procedure helps. The modem firmware is up to date. Any ideas?

while we're at it

what is the standard keyboard shortcut to reveal sidenote? I've forgotten and since I made it reveal only using the shortcut I can't get into it to change the preferences or use it : /

Have you run Software Update recently (Preferences>Software Update)?

Tiger is at 10.4.3 and there have been many bugs address. I'd try that first. Also, have you run Disk Utilities and "repaired permissions" lately?

If you haven't done either of those things yet, first run Software Update, download/apply the updates, and then restart. Then run Disk Utilities and run "Repair Permissions". Then restart. Then see if you still are having problems.

Check out the Apple iCHAT forum. One guy who moderates that page,I think his name is Ralph, has his own web page which focuses on problems with iCHAT. Not that it helped me: I more or less know why my iCHAT/iSIGHT doesn't work, but he seems to offer solutions for others. :-)
