I've been practising this today but can only manage a minute, tops.

Round about 50 secs.

They say you should try taking fast short breaths until you're almost dizzy before taking a huge breath and holding it.... if you're that way inclined.

Breath-holding is supposed to be good exercise for asthmatic lungs.

C J (C J), Monday, 5 December 2005 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

i just did it for just over a minute. havne't really tried properly though.

i think being relaxed about it helps too. keep the heartrate low

ken c (ken c), Monday, 5 December 2005 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

When I was a teenager on long car journeys with my parents I used to practice. 3 minutes 14 seconds was my best.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 5 December 2005 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't you pass out?

C J (C J), Monday, 5 December 2005 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, isn't that clinically dead?

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Monday, 5 December 2005 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

Hyperventilating first does work, like Rumpie said.

Why is it easier to hold your breath underwater?

beanz (beanz), Monday, 5 December 2005 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe it's something to do with the water pressure or something?

C J (C J), Monday, 5 December 2005 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

I find it much harder to hold my breath underwater - the pressure on my chest seems to make it that much more difficult.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 5 December 2005 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe it's a survival instinct?

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Monday, 5 December 2005 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

Because we all used to be dolphins?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 5 December 2005 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

I used to practise this, around 2 minutes was my best. It’s best to do this at the swimming baths, as no one can cheat.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Monday, 5 December 2005 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

The world record for 'static apnoea' – i.e. holding your breath face down in swimming pool – is held by Czech diver Martin Stepanek: eight minutes and six seconds. (Says http://itotd.com/articles/496/ )

beanz (beanz), Monday, 5 December 2005 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

lets have an ILX compitition

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Monday, 5 December 2005 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

Before I discovered Chesterfields as a youth, I could top out at over 3 minutes in my mom's hottub. Now I bet a minute's probably the max.

andy -, Monday, 5 December 2005 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think I've ever been able to do much over a minute.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

75 seconds

luna (luna.c), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

If someone can name that short story about the boy who goes swimming, um, somewhere with an underwater cave and spends the whole time trying to hold his breath for longer and longer periods, my sanity would be really appreciative. I believe it had "mother issues" in it?

I can hold my breath for a while. I think maybe b/c of reading this story when I was young! Also: sibling competitions in the diving pool.

Someone phone for an ambulance

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

hyperventilating really does seem to help. I just did 2 minutes without trying very hard at all.

Rhodia (Rhodia), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

So am I still winning? I doubt I could do it half as long now, mind.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

(Right now, the question I'm facing isn't "Should I link a masturbation thread to this thread?", it's "Which masturbation thread should I link to this thread?")

Dan (Maybe The "Rock Star: INXS" Thread) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

New world record as of today: 15 minutes and two seconds.

I haven't got a clue how someone can do that.

Here he is, banging the windows (not really, don't know why he's holding his arms like that) :

I don't remember having started this thread!

C J, Thursday, 9 August 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

I just managed 1 min, 35 sec. In timing this I allowed myself to exhale, but not to inhale. It eems to help some.

Aimless, Thursday, 9 August 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

Don't try this, but apparently it's not impossible.

exhaling lowers the amount carbonic acid in your blood, which is what causes that panicky burning "have to breathe" feeling.
