haha the best thing wz [xXx] wz there — we haven't been in the same room for i think two years, and we between us managed total non eye-contact, BUT i sang "lollipop (candyman)" by aqua (which includes the line "i wish that i were a bubblegum"), and [xXx] sang nothing so i win utterly

(i realise it doesn't actually work like that)

Anyway, here’s another semi-pro tip: “Hey Jude” aside, you can pretty much sing any Beatles song you want to that you can find a track to and if you do even a half decent job people will respond since most know and love every single one of their tunes. I sometimes get sick of the phenomenon of The Beatles and their monolithic presence in the monoculture but I still can enjoy their music in isolation tracks, in limited doses. But they don’t really need me anymore, Rob Sheffield is taking good care of them.

Just now hearing Death Cab for Cutie singing “Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)” and reminded that I was thinking about singing that last year like I was Darlene Love on David Letterman or something but ran out of time and couldn’t get over there. Maybe I can do it this year if we make it to December.

Which reminds me that I did two Merle Haggard tunes, “Mama Tried” and “Pancho and Lefty.” The first got a good response, the second crickets but I felt really good about it, it was really fun to do both Willie and Merle, and I may try it again. Also checking out some more Merle material for future use.

See some good candidates but don’t want to jinx myself and post ahead of time.

We were waiting at the end of our holiday for the coach transfer, about 30 mins early. So, we went into a bar where it was kicking and it was KJ time.
I put me down for doing "Ebeneezer Goode", what the hell, thinking we'd be long gone. Five mins later, I'm called.
Threw myself into it, kept up with the lyrics, did an "into the crowd", handed the mic back at the end, then grabbed our bags and out to the bus which came 5 mins later.
Definitely an "Elvis has left the building" moment.

Had to skip the last three times. Feeling some combination of withdrawal and a backup backlog of unsung material.

Still doing this. There is some kind of brinkmanship of singing something a little too high and seeing how it goes. Just tried “In Dreams.” Pretty much knew I would have to drop the last line an octave but there were plenty of rough patches before that.

I feel like whatever you can hit in a rehearsal at home (lol 'rehearsal' for karaoke, god i'm pathetic), you should deduct like 15% of that range at a karaoke night. something about alcohol plus nerves and having never done it before leaves the notes you thought you were just hitting at home to disappear.

Yes, this is a very good point.

I don’t really drink anymore. Sometimes I may have one in the middle of the thing after I have already sung one. I went out drinking with some old friends beforehand a few weeks ago and my one nurses drink extended to two. When I got to karaoke and tried to hit some high notes it was like there was a sock in my throat.

The bright side is that afterwards I did “Rocket Man” again for the second time after many months and I didn’t feel much strain hitting the high Bb, more or less.

Still can’t hit and hold that note well enough to do “Life on Mars?” to my satisfaction though. Which is pretty much the whole song so…

Tonight I overcame my lifelong fear of singing in front of people and did karaoke for the first time ever at a friend's birthday party. It was at one of those places where you're in a little room with just your friends, so less intimidating. I started with Tik Tok by Kesha, then did Dancing in the Dark, then Fast Car toward the end of the night. It was ridiculously fun and now I finally understand why people like karaoke.

Some songs get done a lot and I don’t like hearing them until some ringer shows up one day to show how it’s done.

Thinking of doing “Ray of Light” sometime soon, but might have to split the difference between Mo and Jim.

Been doing this regular for pretty much a year now. Wonder if I should issue some kind of summary report, start a new thread or keep my own counsel.

Man oh man, they started booking rock bands now before the karaoke, often playing at Live at Leeds volume in this cozy little place, which pushes the karaoke back even further into the wee wee hours, assuming it even happens at all.

They should make the bands play for karaoke

we have one actual karaoke venue at Citywalk that does exactly that, though for apparently only two nights a week. however, it's a crapshoot if you ever get called to perform as so many people sign up and htey pick randomly.

we also used to have a Blue Martini around here that did it where just about everybody got called up, and man....was it fun! so different singing in front of a band. more likely to move around and have fun with it.

Ha, another band tonight, and they just played one of my karaoke tunes from a few weeks ago and did a good job so I will give them a chance.

next time get on stage right as the vocals are about to begin
