from the story: "He's given Wendy's a corporate identity ... a down-homey type image. The lack of sophistication is a real benefit for the company,'' one financial analyst said.

In 1996, Thomas filmed his 500th commercial. The company staged a lookalike contest that attracted 1,600 entrants vying for the grand prize: a chance to appear in a commercial with Thomas.

maura, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Something better than it was before obviously, as I only have a vague idea that a 'Wendys' is a cheap-ass American diner (as if they come any other way). My, dissing from the ANTI-COOK means yer in a bad way.

Sarah, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or is it something else? Is Wendys a type of bread? Why am I thinking this?! Ah some threads I should just accept I know nothing on, innit.

Sarah, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wendy's = square burgers = massive flop in the UK.

Pete, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It is a burger place isn't it? I thought it was in Britain too, maybe not. It's not over here. We only have the usual suspects plus the dirtiest fast food place in the world with the coolest name, "Abrakebabra". Yes I always eat there when I'm drunk. It would be wrong not to support a namelike that.

Ronan, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wendy's in Wood Green was NUM NUM - nice burgers, very filling, those dinky little paper cups for ketchup, best bacon of any of the burger places, curiously addictive artificial Frostee texture...mmmmm. But the burgers were square I grant you.

Tom, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There used to be a Wendy's on Shaftesbury Avenue too didn't there? They were the best fast food burgers in town.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's an Abra-Kebab-Ra in Bolton too! Bolton or Adlington, somewhere round that way. It is genius!

Sarag, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why don't they replace Dave Thomas the dead with Dave Thomas from Pere Ubu? He'd be great providing he didn't start witnessing. I always trust a fat bloke to tell me what's tasty good.

RickyT, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kraft Cheese Slices are tasty good, RickyT.

Tom, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wendys in fact launched twice in the UK - firstly in the early-mid '80s, and then again abt ten years later. By far the best hamburger chain - good salad bar, ok chilli (w/crackers, which seemed so exotic at the time), those wicked ketchup pumps, and the calorific chocolate frosty. There used to be a Wendys on Cambridge Circus where a Pizza Hut now stands, and one on The Strand, where a Pizza Hut now stands...hmmm. Back in the 80s an American comics fan of my aquaintance refused to eat in Wendys because he claimed the management had something to do w/ the Kent State shootings - I never did find out if he was on crack or not.

Some years after Wendys vanished from the UK the first time round I visited Venice, and was absurdly delighted to find one of their 'restaurants' just off St. Mark's Square. Culture...mmmm....

Posession of full face beard negates any taste related trustworthiness accquired through girth.

RickyT, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

once, travelling in the US, we were in the middle of nowhere and quite hungry. the only restaurant that we'd seen in miles was a wendy's. I'm not american, but I'm familiar with dave thomas' legend. this wendy's. although seeming to be far from anywhere was TEEMING with people. and an old lady was having her birthday party. decorations adorned the salad bar and service counter. I forget what I ate. it wasn't square.

richard john gillanders, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely any new advertising strategy has to feature Huey Lewis and the news.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

they could replace him with the sctv dave thomas.

A DIGITAL RECREATION OF DAVID THOMAS.

Mandee, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There is only one MacDonald's that got bankrupt. Which one? the one in Bruges. hah! They opened a new one a few years ago and it's doing okay.

helenfordsdale, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Saw him on C-SPAN once, in the heady days of the Gingrich "revolution" giving a talk to a bunch of right-wing lunatics. I think he rambled on for a bit about adoption v. abortion, then started into that great Pauline theme, "If you don't work, you don't eat." Ever since then, I couldn't see his twinkling little eyes on his television ads without wanting to poke them out.

Far better fast food than the rest, in any case.

Benjamin, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Your change rolls down a plastic ramp!"

That's why I always went, anyway. That and the tables silkscreened with old Sears-Roebuck catalogs. Oh, and the "junior" bacon cheeseburger is 99c and just as big as the normal one.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

GOTT ADMIT I LIKE WENDYS BURGER , RA-THER!IT FILLS IT WITH LOVE TO EAT IT. LET US GRIND UP DAVE AND WE SHALL MAKE HIM A BURGER TOO

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's just like any other gross little burger place. They used to have salad and taco and pasta bars, and I would eat spaghetti because I don't like hamburgers, but now it's gone. Bring it back.

Maria, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A BOLD PROTEST FROM MARIA. THE MASSES HAVE SPOKEN

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what is wrong with square burgers? round = more natural? = don't be silly...

mark s, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bullshit. Wendy's burgers are the best! Their 99 cent menu rules it.

Kris, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Their chicken sandwhich is good because it's an acutal whole chicken breast, not shredded up bits all pressed together. But then they ruin it by placing it on a mushy bun with a scant piece of iceberg lettuce and lone tomato slice, so it's not that good after all.

Sean, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I really miss Wendy's in London. It rocked.

suzy, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fond memeories of 1986-ish. Saturday mornings - go into King's to get results of overnight experiment, followed by a few pints in the Wellington and a burger from Wendy's on the Strand to eat on the way to Stamford Bridge (if CFC at home) or recd shops (if CFC away and out of town).

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They should say, "We've ground up Dave's body and put it into our burgers! That way, there will be a litle bit of Dave in all of us!!"

noo, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have just read that Dave flipped his first burger at the age of 12 in his hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee! Dang! I wonder if he lived near the Chapman Highway store.

I say bring back "Wendy"!!

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hear Wendy is now divorced and living in Reno with a kid in jail

mike hanle y, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ad strategy = shots of dave's grave and voiceovers from the past. Run nostalgia for all its worth. "It was a kinder, gentler time for fast food chains. The people were friendly and real, and then, as now, we made every burger with an extra helping of love."

They need to fill in with yellow

tehresa, Sunday, 16 September 2007 03:51 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it took me a while to figure out what was going on in that photo. The person's shaved hair follicles or skin pores or whatever almost look like the texture of a styrofoam cup.

dell, Sunday, 16 September 2007 03:56 (eighteen years ago)

Wendy's got a bad nose job.

Abbott, Sunday, 16 September 2007 04:04 (eighteen years ago)

tehresa, Sunday, 16 September 2007 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

This is a terrible advertising strategy. That tat is positively nauseous.

libcrypt, Sunday, 16 September 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

HOW CAN YOU TELL?

wanko ergo sum, Sunday, 16 September 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

I had previously supposed that Wendy's-diners were sorts of folk uninterested in culinary nausea, but perhaps I supposed wrongly.

libcrypt, Sunday, 16 September 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

three months pass...

Just got back from Wendy's. THEY'VE REMOVED THE CATTLE CORRAL. That was the only thing that separated Wendy's from the anarchies of McDonald's and Burger King.

Also, there were no old-timey ads to read on the table-tops, but I think those have been disappearing for awhile anyway.

But seriously. It looked like an Arby's in there. No terrarium either.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

They nixed the ham and swiss ciabatta, which was the roundabout the only reasonable thing they had. Inexcusable.

The Reverend, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I've seen old-timey ads on the tabletops since the early '90s!

jaymc, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

wendy's is by far the best fast food joint in the US and as long as they have a chicken sandwich, fires and a frosty it's unfuckwithable in my book

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 December 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

yes as long as they feed me FIRE

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 December 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

the chicken sandwich!!

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 31 December 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

When I was younger and poorer I'd make a meal out of their 99-cent baked potato and 99-cent chili, combined in the obvious way -- this is still the cheapest, easiest fast-food thing I know of that feels like real actual life-sustaining food.

nabisco, Monday, 31 December 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

which topping would u get on the potatoe

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 31 December 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

(a) get it plain and pour in the chili
(b) broccoli

nabisco, Monday, 31 December 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

I still kinda miss that weird salad bar they used to have.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 31 December 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

their burgers are fucking gross, and it's just...more odd than reassuring that they seem to put some effort into everything else. their fries and shakes i remember as being good but when i think of going to a place i think of their flagship item and if it sucks it puts me off the whole place, which is my problem i guess. wendy's is a place i can safely say i'll never go to again without ever really hating it.

tremendoid, Monday, 31 December 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

Their latest advertising campaign, trying to ape the off-center vibe of Burger King's, is really fucking stupid.

If I see that guy in the wig interrupt the political debate again...

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 31 December 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

Not Whatever This Fresh Hell Is...

https://www.foodandwine.com/wendys-introducing-dynamic-pricing-8600506

Tanner stated, “Beginning as early as 2025, we will begin testing more enhanced features like dynamic pricing and daypart offerings along with AI-enabled menu changes and suggestive selling.”

In case that sounds like a load of corporate jargon, let us break it down: Dynamic pricing, as defined by our friends at Investopedia, allows companies to set variable pricing that can fluctuate up and down throughout the day, depending on demand. For example, if you’ve ever seen “surge pricing” on your Uber app, this is dynamic pricing.

"Businesses are able to change prices based on algorithms that take into account competitor pricing, supply, and demand, and other external factors in the market,” Investopedia explains. “Dynamic pricing is a common practice in several industries such as hospitality, travel, entertainment, retail, electricity, and public transport. Each industry takes a slightly different approach to repricing based on its needs and the demand for the product.”

This means a Wendy’s burger may sell at a higher price point during a busy lunch rush, then come down in price during an afternoon lull, and go back up again at dinner time.

an icon of a worried-looking, long-haired, bespectacled man (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 02:27 (two years ago)

Sounds like the top suite of corporate officers are desperate to find a some way to pump up the stock price. It's also a brilliant way to infuriate your customers and your franchise holders.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 02:44 (two years ago)

reminds me of a bar in Kalamazoo that has a "stock exchange" gimmick, where demand affects the prices of different beers on tap. but it's presented as a novelty, where the price never actually goes *too* high, and there are artificial random "market crashes" where everything is cheap for like a short period of time. the wendy's version doesn't sound like that.

jaymc, Tuesday, 27 February 2024 02:53 (two years ago)

thanks i hate it

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 04:48 (two years ago)

my father has been with "Wendy's" for most of his adult life, quotes because over the past decade or so they have sold most of their restaurants to franchisees, pretty much just a brand today

anyways have it on good authority that everything went south when Dave died, RIP king

Baconator futures

batman monster truck (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 05:17 (two years ago)

Those features are so enhanced!
That's what I look for in a boiger... enhanced features....

m0stly clean (Slowsquatch), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 12:38 (two years ago)

What the fuck does “AI-enabled menu changes” mean? Making up new recipes with ChatGPT?

B. Amato (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 13:05 (two years ago)

i am the only person i know - i have issues - who doesn't use drive-thrus and the wendys in my town is like a TB ward when you go in there. so bleak. like i'm half expecting to see Mother Theresa in the corner wiping someone's brow with a blood-speckled washcloth.

scott seward, Tuesday, 27 February 2024 13:58 (two years ago)

the quality of Wendy's burgers went off a cliff about a decade ago, so gross now

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 14:03 (two years ago)

the junior bacon cheeseburger used to be pretty good. back when it was just a buck. I think their spicy chicken is still one of the best fast food sandwiches. and Frosties still rule. that said when you are talking about "dynamic prices" and "AI-assisted menu options" you are clearly going out of business

frogbs, Tuesday, 27 February 2024 14:15 (two years ago)

skot, about thirty years ago I saw a junkie pass out in the toilet at the West Street Wendy's in Danbury

B. Amato (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 14:16 (two years ago)

This new business strategy feels like some higher-up pretty brazenly trying to sabotage the company from within and all of the other execs sagely smiling and nodding at this daring new approach because they're too stupid to recognize what's happening

Great-Tasting Burger Perceptions (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 14:18 (two years ago)

the wendy's ai server clicks and hums in a remote datacenter, spewing out an endless stream of "spicy chicken frosties" on the front ticker tape.

batman monster truck (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 14:32 (two years ago)

Just to be a devil's advocate, why is this different from places that have a happy hour and offer discounts at off-peak times?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 14:38 (two years ago)

Because they are raising prices at peak times, which, in the context of fast food offerings, is the act of someone who is very very stupid.

Great-Tasting Burger Perceptions (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 14:47 (two years ago)

Boy I can't wait until grocery stores follow this lead too. Such a great life in late stage capitalism.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 27 February 2024 14:49 (two years ago)

I'll be surprised if this actually happens.
