I sometimes dispair at my own lack of discernment, but it's only fleeting.

Andrew, I think you put a question mark where you meant to put an exclamation mark. I know, in the haste to post, they're easy to confuse.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

Johnny Depp is probably the nearest I get too. He doesn't always pick good'uns, but they're always interesting. And since I've been dating Sgs, Chow Yun Fat is another whose oeuvre I'm becoming more familiar with :)

(the last two films I've seen - Corpse Bride and The Libertine - are both Depp, and both good, the former definitely worth seeing)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

I totally wanted to see that Witherspoon/Ruffalo vehicle, despite the lousy reviews, just because I like both of them. I am staying away from the Aniston one, though.

nineteen years pass...

At the movies the other day, I was struck by the fact that none of the trailers I saw -- for Thunderbolts, Jurassic World: Rebirth, Superman, Until Dawn, and M3gan 2.0 -- touted (by name) the actors who starred in them.

Perhaps understandable in the case of Until Dawn, for instance, which doesn't really have recognizable stars. But Thunderbolts has Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan and David Harbour, and Jurassic World has Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali.

In the Thunderbolts trailer, title cards told us the names of the characters, but not the actors who play them. (Would've been easy to do "Florence Pugh *is* so-and-so.") Felt especially weird that ScarJo's name wasn't mentioned at all, but I guess she is playing second fiddle to the dinosaurs and the franchise.

With Superman, I don't know the lead actor (David Corenswet), but he's been in stuff that surely other people know? And omitting his name seems like a missed opportunity to help make him a star. Meanwhile, I was wondering "who's that playing Lex Luthor?" because I didn't recognize the actor with a shaved head, and the trailer didn't have the courtesy of letting me know it's Nicholas Hoult, which could potentially have made me interested in seeing the movie (though probably not lol).

Interestingly, Superman was the only movie of these that touted the name of the director: "From James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy." I guess Gunn's MCU bona fides are more important to people who might see Superman than any of the actors in the movie.
