"Doug, do you even know who Bob Dylan is?"
"No, but I know he died of drugs!"
"Doug, Bob Dylan is alive and well. I produced his last 3 albums."
"Oh, you mean Uncle Robert?"
And those are the only two sketches I can really remember. I'd like it on dvd too.

It's a marvelous day at the porcupine racetrack!

So god if you're above, and it's orphans...that you love, please help the porcupine I chose.
― John Justen, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)
I think I might be able to do that entire sketch front to back from memory. Yikes.
― John Justen, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)
How much of the music is left, or were they able to license it?
― kingfish, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)
oh lol...in my highschool we had student directed plays, and my friend and i directed a version of "porcupine racetrack"
i feel really nerdy admitting that.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)
they took the crispy pops (and presumably all the other state sketches) off youtube, fuckerz
― impudent harlot, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)
kingfish: dunno but perhaps that's why it's taken so damn long?
i worry that seeing it again might destroy the perception in my mind that this show is brilliant.
"would you please, AS A FAVOUR TO ME, ignore the wide open gate"
"i'm bustin' outta here!" "How??" "that wide open gate over there"

the only thing i ever really liked on the state was the bankrobbers who make their getaway in an "invisible car" (really just them running down the street, pretending to be in a car).. they "pull into" a country gas station, "steal" the gas by pumping it into their car (i.e. onto the ground) and then zoom off... just as policemen pull up in their own invisible car
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 20 July 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)
* * * NOTE (Nov 1, 2007): We are sorry to report The State DVD is now NOT being released this fall. We worked closely with MTV to make a great DVD set with lots of extras for the show, and the DVDs are completed, but they has chosen not to release the set at this time. We don't know why.

I bought the first season of The State through Xbox live video market place. It's crystal clear, dvd quality. So far only the first season (episodes 1-5) are available. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/marketplace/moviestv/mtv.htm#S
I'm going to try to zorp this off my xbox and on to my pc (if I can figure out how) for "backup purposes".
So far xbox live looks like the only place to get quality copies.

― Jordan, Friday, 16 November 2007 17:09 (seventeen years ago)
I love KITH above all else, but that doesn't mean I have to love The State less (or, for that matter, Mr. Show, old SNL, less old SNL, new SNL, etc)... sketch comedy is awesome when done well! The State does it well! It's not like I have a certain amount of my time that's dedicated to watching sketch, and there's only room for KITH! Why can't we al jsut get along!!!!!
Course, there is BAD sketch comedy. That I don't watch. Example: this show in Canada with this dude named Gavin. Agh I hate it.

why?
― Jordan, Friday, 16 November 2007 17:56 (seventeen years ago)
hey its your brain, eyes, ear and DVD player. i know a few people who thought it was "cute" enough to be passable. I'm just shocked somebody from the State could serve up so many stale romcom cliches with barely a hint of self-awareness.
DVDs extras for the Ten look great too.

― da croupier, Friday, 16 November 2007 17:58 (seventeen years ago)
I don't really remember it that well but:
* a genuine romantic comedy that i could watch with sarah that was not cliched or stupid and was actually funny and had jokes * I have long been fascinated by the concept of the Baxter, though I never called it that, but like bill pullman's character in sleepless in seattle * michelle williams
― n/a, Friday, 16 November 2007 17:59 (seventeen years ago)
i think people who went in expecting some kind of crazy edgy "the state" movie would be disappointed, but as a romantic comedy it was like 9,000 times better than almost everything else that you get forced into watching with your gf/wife. i think that's what showalter was aiming for too, to make a good romantic comedy, not anything subversive or edgy
― n/a, Friday, 16 November 2007 18:01 (seventeen years ago)
plus michelle williams
yeah, i guess if i was expecting a romantic comedy with cool people in it, rather than wet hot american summer pt II, that would have helped
― Jordan, Friday, 16 November 2007 18:03 (seventeen years ago)
paul rudd and justin theroux were funny in it
if sleepless in seattle was a state movie bill pullman would have paused for a second and then shot himself at the table right after telling Meg Ryan she should break their engagement and go meet the man she's been stalking at the Empire State building.
my gf thankfully does not make me watch movies that are 9,000 times worse than the baxter. And those that are, like say, Rumor Has It, are probably more entertaining in their wrongness. I wish I didn't remember how cliched the Baxter was either (what in the movie was NOT cliched?). I would have listened to Showalter's CD by now, then.
The one good scene was when all the state guys showed up and just riffed.
― da croupier, Friday, 16 November 2007 18:04 (seventeen years ago)
the only difference between the Baxter and every other movie about two people in unbelievably awful relationships who eventually realize they belong together is that they wore cuter clothes.
― da croupier, Friday, 16 November 2007 18:06 (seventeen years ago)
the Baxter was weird, like, i don't like many zany indie comedies, but i see even less of a point in doing an indie comedy that's exactly like every mainstream rom com. they could've dropped Ben Stiller in Showalter's role and wouldn't have had to change anything else for it to be indistinguishable from your garden variety crappy Ben Stiller movie, including the supporting cast.
― Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 16 November 2007 18:11 (seventeen years ago)
Pitchfork: Another one of your blog posts mentioned a reunion of the State.
Michael Showalter: Yeah. We're making a movie together. It's sort of on hold because of the writers' strike. But I think within the next two years, you will be hearing about a State movie. In the vein of a Monty Python film, which is to say a sketch comedy film. Like The Meaning of Life or something.
Pitchfork: And it's going to be about U.S. history?
MS: It's going to tell the story of the history of the United States. Great moments in American history as told by the State.
Pitchfork: It sounds a little like [Mel Brooks'] History of the World: Part I too.
MS: I think that's a fair comparison, although I don't think it will in any way resemble History of the World. Because our definition of great events is fairly broad. And fictional. It's not been written yet, which is the truth. So I'm speculating.
Pitchfork: Is everyone from the State going to be in it?
MS: Yeah. Everybody. A total, full reunion.

I still think about that one sketch about "the Cracker family" who would stuff their faces full of saltine crackers and every time they talked everyone got covered in cracker dust. I have not been able to find it on YouTube or anywhere else
― frogbs, Thursday, 23 April 2020 21:52 (five years ago)
oh yeah
http://www.lasertimepodcast.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/crackers-thestate.jpg
seems like they did a lot of sketches with that premise, where it was basically just a typical american nuclear family living in a sitcom tv set except one thing was off: either they only ate saltines, or they drank too much coffee, or the house was sideways for some reason ("my boy is dead and this house killed him as it will kill every last one of us!")
then again I guess that might be the single most common sketch premise of all sketch comedy shows ever
― the burrito that defined a generation, Thursday, 23 April 2020 23:35 (five years ago)
but there will only ever be one Porcupine Racetrack.

still remember that guy as "Johnny Bluejeans" on Viva Variety. I think I was like, 10 when that aired, didn't really "get it" but still watched it every week
