I'm going there next week, and it'd be great to get some suggestions.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

No idea, but that is the correct question, isn't it?

Mitya (mitya), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

St. Louis isn't a good town for BBQ, but there is plenty of good food. Try In Soo in U. City for Korean/Chinese.

mte22 (mte22), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

Local chain Super Smokers is pretty good, but I'm sure there are even better places that I don't know about here...

mike a, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

Go to the Salt Lick.

Spink, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

Chicken (in season) or Turkey Plate

There's a chicken season?!

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

In Texas, they have many seasons you might not be aware of.

Spink, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe I shouldn't have said bbq - clearly St. Louis is known for ribs, can I get some rib-centric recommendations?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

"St. Louis Style Ribs" mainly refers to the cut of ribs. The style of seasoning St. Louis is known for however is not my thing...I prefer either memphis dry ribs or 3 week smoked Texas style.

Spink, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

Aka St. Louis = sweet

Spink, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

I'm a vegetarian so I can't help you! I hear good things about sweetie pie's and delmonico's for soul food (and goody's, if that's still open--their downtown location is closed but maybe they opened up a new one on the north side?), and there is a BBQ joint up the road from me, Smokin' Al's, that I think is supposed to be good.

I would love to show you around but by next week I should have a new baby.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

Congratulations on the new baby, by the way!

I wouldn't have really had much time to see people - I'm only there for a couple days, and I'm spending all of my time with my old friend and his new wife. And we're seeing the U2/Kanye West show.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

ah good, then you'll have someone to show you around. St louis is a totally underrated city!

Kansas City.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

How about Springfield? That's actually where I'm spending the bulk of my time.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

Damn, Matthew, we could've had a STL FAP in your honor...except too many of us would need babysitters, I guess.

mike a, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

I've had a few East Coast friends/fellow bloggers visit me in STL. They always go home raving, like they were surprised STL was such a cool place.

Frozen custard at Ted Drewes, Matthew. That's another STL culinary must (though they might be closed for the winter).

mike a, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

Ted Drewes on Grand is closed but the Chippewa location is open to sell christmas trees! I'm hoping to make it down there to get mine before the baby comes.

I don't know anything about Springfield. How long are you in st louis? Another culinary must (and not far from downtown) is Crown Candy, in Old North St. Louis.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

I'm only in St. Louis for a day - coming in for U2/Kanye, staying overnight, hanging out a bit the next day before driving back to Springfield, where my friend lives.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

I'm totally making a note of the frozen custard place, by the way.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

Springfield isn't that big so your choices aren't going to be great. I lived there for a few years and never found a good bbq place. A good cafe is Ziggies, it's Greek and their breakfast menu is great. For Mexican food I always liked Carlos O'Kelly's, but now I don't remember why. Mexican Villa is a local favorite, their sauce is VERY VERY VERY hot. Most of the restaurants are the popular chains (Chili's, Applebee's, etc...), though. You could drive around by the college and take your chances with one of the hamburger places.

Rebekkah (burntbrat), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and Harpo's has decent food and you can take the cups home with you. Maybe the cups were the only reason I liked it. They're like beer souvenirs.

Rebekkah (burntbrat), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

Jane and Michael Stern recommend C&K Barbecue at 4390 Jennings Station Road. You need to run right out and buy their book, "Roadfood." We went to Booches in Columbia because it was written up in there, and had the most amazing cheeseburgers ever. It's worth a side-trip, plus Columbia is cool.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 8 December 2005 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.roadfood.com/

Here you go.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 8 December 2005 00:09 (nineteen years ago)

Huh. Can't find that restaurant in that site.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 8 December 2005 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

Four hours (round-trip) is a long way to go for a cheeseburger.

(even though they're really, really good cheeseburgers.)

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 8 December 2005 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I was gonna mention Ted Drewes as well. Oddly, the only restaurants I remember in St. Louis, from the four or five times I've been there, are both Middle Eastern places. Well, and Blueberry Hill.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 December 2005 00:21 (nineteen years ago)

Four hours (round-trip) is a long way to go for a cheeseburger.

No, no, you don't understand...it's a transformative experience.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 8 December 2005 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

I found St Louis BBQ really disappointing when I lived there. Ted Drewes on the other hand was fantastic.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 8 December 2005 00:57 (nineteen years ago)

ah, thanks for that link Beth! I was confusing the downtown soul food place Goody's with that Goody Goody Diner listed there, which is on the north side but is unrelated to the closed Goody's. It's near that C&K barbecue, too.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:18 (nineteen years ago)

Blueberry Hill is great - plus I've seen Jenny Toomey, Fiery Furnaces, Iron & Wine, etc. in front of tiny crowds there.

mike a, Thursday, 8 December 2005 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

I dunno about the bbq, but I've NEVER seen such an apocalyptic evening thunderstorm -- after which, it got MORE humid!!

Aside from the ballgames and that nurse I made out with at Clementine's Bar, ick.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

I love Blueberry Hill...I have yet to see Chuck Berry there. :(

Tape Store, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

Apparently, at the end of the concert, he'll have all the ladies in attendance come up on stage and dance with him. Factor in that the stage isn't very big... that's just filthy. The National played the Duck Room in June, I really regret missing them.

And has anyone been to the Lucas School? I saw Asobi Seksu there last fall, which is the biggest - or best known band that has played there yet, to my knowledge. And, on the first floor, the big screen had on the Cards game in the NLCS against the Mets, the one where Jeff Suppan hit a home run. Later, I had to go to the Chase Park to meet friends for a birthday party, and that goblin Steven Tyler - he'd sung the national anthem - got ferreted in through the bar. He's tiny. It was a magical evening.

jposnan, Thursday, 2 August 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

I was at that nlcs game ^_^

Moved from the Worst Airport thread...

...

In mid November, I'm flying to St. Louis from Seattle to take part in a musical thing. I'm using Southwest for all legs of the trip.

Here's my schedule. Each way has one layover
Sunday, Nov 9th: morning to evening : SEA -> DEN -> STL
Friday, Nov 14th: afternoon to evening : STL -> MDW -> SEA

I'm also checking a hard case containing an electric guitar.

In which ways will I get fucked over? (This was the standout cheapest and affordable option.)

how did EWR escape with 0 votes

Mackro, I quite enjoyed St. Louis when I visited a year and a half ago. Have fun. Take some pics of those wonderful old Munsters-like houses (and share them please)! I took some great pics of those but lost them in my computer crash. Lafayette Park and the houses around it made a deep impression on me. (Though I suppose for you it's not the right time of year to be outdoors) There was also a bar right near there that specialized in chocolate drinks and chocolate desserts. Can't remember what it was called, but I thought it was really cool. They had pics/quotes from Alice In Wonderland for their bathrooms.

Also, some woman had left her bra neatly laid over the side of one of the garbage cans in the park. I thought that was funny. Like passion just took her over right there and then!

I don't remember any problems with the airport, there, but I don't believe I checked any baggage. Can't remember if I had a layover at another airport or not.

Bimble, thank you! I'll be staying more or less in the downtown area. I have to rehearse at the Powell Symphony Hall, then head west to the Pageant Theater for the soundcheck and actual performance, so I won't be going outside the city limits or anything. And Powell Symphony Hall looks like it's just walking distance from the arches.

As for the weather, I checked it out and apparently November is a really good weather month for St. Louis! Then again, I like sunny and cold.

I should move this to a St. Louis thread.

...

Doodly doodly doodly.

So I'm flying in on the Sunday so I can intentially have a full free day in STL, being Monday November 10th. I'll be too busy the rest of the week with the musical thing (although if it's your thing, I highly encourage you guys to either attend the event on the 13th, or perhaps partake in the rehearsals if you qualify!)

Any recommendations on places to stay? The main thing is that I need to stay somewhere really close to Powell Symphony Hall, preferably right at the main cross streets if possible. Is there anything else out there? Even a 7-11 or Kinko's or something?

Also if you guys recommend a good reliable music store whom I can rent a guitar amp from, that would be a bonus.

Thanks in advance! I'm excited about this trip out.

obamaloverholeinyohead (Mackro Mackro), Friday, 10 October 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know that I would stay near the Symphony Hall. That's kind of a dead zone.

Alex in SF, Friday, 10 October 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, there's nowhere really to stay right there. think there are some coffee shops nearby but thats about it. don't go north or you may get shot :(

bnw, Friday, 10 October 2008 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

Very useful! Thank you Alex and bnw.

hmm.

obamaloverholeinyohead (Mackro Mackro), Friday, 10 October 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

bnw, what's St Louis like these days? I really South Grand and U City when I lived in the awful awful awful suburbs.

Alex in SF, Friday, 10 October 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

west of there is the Central West End which has shops, bars, restaurants, and ppl walking around. south is st. louis university, which has some bars and food around it, most are on the south or west side of campus. theres a metrolink stop on the south side of campus too where you can ride to other parts of the city, like university city/delmar loop where theres at least 1 music shop and vintage vinyl which is the biggest record shop in the area.

bnw, Friday, 10 October 2008 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

South Grand is still pretty cool. U City has gotten better in some ways, like its crept into the city somewhat, but its also gotten a lot more commercialized with ugly chain stores.

bnw, Friday, 10 October 2008 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

Has the new stadium revitalized the downtown at all or is it still a dead zone (minus the pretty but tacky waterfront)?

Alex in SF, Friday, 10 October 2008 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think the stadium has changed things, but things have changed, people live downtown now so there is stuff going on in the evening. There are some development plans for the waterfront too, they are going to try to connect the arch grounds to downtown a little better, maybe hide the interstate that cuts between the two.

Powell is not walking distance from the arch imo. Although 2 or so miles during the day would probably be fine, and you can take the metro from downtown to the Pageant. Walking down Delmar/Washington may take you through some slightly dodgy areas, but I'd characterize them as shabby, not dangerous. I have not hiked that stretch (toting a guitar) recently though. If I were you I'd take the bus. I'm going to email you. I wish I could put you up/give you a tour but once again I am due to have a baby a week or less before an ilxor visit!

teeny, Saturday, 11 October 2008 11:42 (seventeen years ago)

Teeny, congrats! Best of luck once again!

I just booked myself at the Civic Center Sheraton (400 S 14th St.). Apparently, it's literally across the street from the central train station, so for carless me, I hope this helps out my transit options.

Still looking for places that will rent out guitar amps. It seems all guitar stores are at least 12 miles away from downtown. :(
