I'm just browsing around on Amazon doing a bit of t'shopping, and I need to get a Christmas present for one of my nieces. She's 17, and is into really scary horror movies - the scarier the better.

What shall I buy?

seriously tho, there are no really scary movies ?

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Cannibal Holocaust sounds really gruesome!

C J (C J), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

There might be, but every movie Ive seen in the last 3 years has been ruined by spoilers or cretinous monkeys in the back of the theatre making whooping noises.

Spink, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Cannibal Holocaust is indeed rather gruesome, might be worth a shot.

The original Amityville Horror
The Thing
Halloween 1
Se7en
The Omen

'cannibal holocaust' -> Uh that was just plain GROSS. not really scary. but it's def. a classick.

Oh, the ironing... finally a chance to say CALUM TO THREAD, but he's not here any more.

The UK version of Cannibal Holocaust has all the real life animal snuffs excised - it is quite an interesting movie, pre-Blair Witch self-reflexive blahdiblah, but is not esp. spooky/scary

i wld suggest these Italian horror flicks instead, all of which can be quite frightening in the right set/setting:

Suspiria (Dario Argento - ultra-stylish supernatural spookfest w/ high gore quotient - great great soundtrack too)
The Beyond (Lucio Fulci - dreamlike necro gutchomping)
Bay of Blood (Mario Bava - one of the first body count movies, ripped off for Friday the 13th)

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

the eye.

not much spooks me but this did.

i wouldn't really rate The Beyond as being scary, but it had some neat gore moments.

American Werewolf in London, enjoy the dream sequences. A great film to boot.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is still one of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is still one of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen.

Too much screaming, gets annoying after a while.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

yeah but that spooky old grandfather guy, when they're trying to get him to hammer the girls head. just wrong.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

just wrong

Yeah, but at the same time so right!

i do really like the film for it's shock content, but it's just the constant screaming that grates.

If you want to endear yourself to her parents, buy her Audition. (Don't buy her Audition.)

American Meh-wolf In London is OK, I guess, tho I'm down on it mostly because everyone hypes the living shit out of it, and when I finally saw it, I was let down. The transformation sequence is still !!!

A really good werewolf flick of recent vintage: Ginger Snaps. Canadian teenage werewolves are awesome! Don't know if it's all that scary, but it's a fun flick.

"Jacob's Ladder" is a good movie. It's one of those psychological horror movies, if that is the sort of horror movie she is into.

If she doesn't equate horror with gore:

The Ordeal is pretty fucking scary, and has the best bar scene in cinema

Sleepaway Camp (no, seriously)
April Fool's Day (It's fun but the ending is kinda cool and weird)
God Told Me To (Not really a horror movie, but dude...see it anyway)
Mulberry Lane (this was part of the Afterdark Film Fest and was one of its best entries)

Officer, I Just Shot Seven People (Bo Jackson Overdrive), Sunday, 14 September 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, and Skinned Deep. It's probably the strangest horror film I've ever seen
