Help me make the right music storage choice, please!

Christmas is right around the corner and I am completely flummoxed as to what to get my partner, Sally.

She lives and breaths music, so the "right" choice sounds like an ipod. However, she and I also need new cell phones (hers barely works) and there are 4 new phones in Americaland that allow you to download MP3 files....plus....they're frickin' PHONES! (with cameras, ability to watch movie clips and all the other bells and whistles that high end phones have.)

This is my dilemma:

1) Sally has used up 5 Walkman's in 3 years, so I know that a music device would rock her world. But an ipod costs $199 to $499, which would allow me to buy either HER a new phone or both of us. And, by the way, just HOW many people really download 15,000 tunes???

2) The phones that I'm looking at are:
Motorola Rokr
Cingular's itune: which is an Apple/Phone hybrid
Sony W600I
Sony S710
Audiovox SMT5600

So, this is my question to people who are ADDICTED TO MUSIC and can't live without it (which I'm not):

Are any of these music storage phones an acceptable fill in for an ipod??? I can't justify spending money on JUST a music device, (I'm far too practical for that), but will honor music-lovers answers, since that's why I'm asking.

ipod.

what he said.

Yeah, iPod.

Cellphones can be cheaply replaced if you make even a cursory search, and, more importantly

What do you think She'd rather have?

Get the iPod, get it personalized for her, and enjoy the benefit of her being able to tune you out whenever she needs to.

How do you get an ipod personalized?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 9 December 2005 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

(also, ipod)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 9 December 2005 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

I love ALL of your answers, particularly Big Loud Mountain Ape's.

I was trying to be practical, but you're right...it's Christmas...and get HER what she'd like.

I'd never use an ipod if I was given one, preferring to have a good glass of wine, on the sofa, while chilling to tunes. But Sally commutes for 2 hours...daily...and also goes to Uni part time and has downtime between classes.

Thanks for the honesty, guys. ipod, it is!!! There's a massive Apple store a mile from here, so I'll go in and get her one and have it personalized.

Now, for you ipod users/lovers: I'm not getting the Shuffle, but HOW big a storage system should I get??? And, with the new one, you can download movie/tv clips...necessary or not?

Thanks for your time.

i was looking at new phones the other day and there was this package that gives you a phone and an ipod shuffle FOR FREE.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 December 2005 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

i might get that.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 December 2005 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

oh oops xpost! re: shuffle

20Gb is quite a lot. i dunno how often people really use it for pictures.. videos might be good though.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 December 2005 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

ken c: which package was it?

PsychoKitty (PsychoKitty), Friday, 9 December 2005 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

I recommend a full sized iPod (and no, I don't work for Apple). My wife got a shuffle, and its perfect for her smallish playlist/short commute everyday. Nothing wrong, in and of itself, with the Shuffle. And they're really cool little things.

But, with a person who "lives and breathes" music with such a long commute? Totally go with as large a storage capacity as you can afford. I mean, I sometimes on longish commutes will jump from Johnny Cash to Miles Davis to ODB (I'm ECLECTIC people!), for instance, and its nice to have A LOT of music to choose from.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 9 December 2005 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

agreed. i got my ipod for free a few years back and its a 10gb, which is more than enough for me, i take old stuff off and put new stuff on all the time. although i am thinking up upgrading. i just bought this thing a few weeks ago and must admit its unbelievable.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Friday, 9 December 2005 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

I think the shuffle is a bit ridiculous. Can you get another (non-Apple- MP3 player for the same amount of money with a SCREEN?

How do you get an ipod personalized?

They scratch your name on the back, I think. You can order it at the online Apple Store.

"How do you get an ipod personalized?

You can get it personalized by buying On-line. It might also be possible (don't know???) if you go directly to an Apple store.

Big Loud Mountain Ape: Sally works for a theatre company and is getting her Master's in Music Theory, so her tastes range as wide as yours. One minute, it can be Johnny Cash, the next Massive Attack, the next Etta James. The 30 GB holds 7500 songs; I think that THAT will do her just fine. Again, I can't fathom wanting to listen to 15,000 songs!

My God, slow jamz: what an awesome looking device the link took me to. So, for the dimwitted (ME!), do you plug your ipod into that and it acts as a 'normal' stereo system that anyone can hear? I'm asking because Sally's bedroom stereo is kaput and she, herself, has talked about buying a new one. I could get her the ipod for Christmas and the other thing for her birthday. How is the sound quality on the stereo plug-in thingy?

PsychoKitty (PsychoKitty), Friday, 9 December 2005 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

i think it's one with 3??

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 December 2005 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

4GB and 6GB Minis and 20GB regular ipods with B&W screens are discontinued and remaining stocks are going for a little cheaper, if they haven't run out already. We got our daughter a blue 6GB Mini for xmas, and I got myself a 20GB in Sept.

my flatmate is looking into the details for me so i'll tell you when i find out the details later!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 December 2005 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

yes, you stick you ipod in the front little holder thing and it charges it and acts as a home stereo system, the sound is great on it. I compared it with the BOSE Ipod Dock (which is $50 more by the way) and the sound is just as good if not better.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Friday, 9 December 2005 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

Would that I could, listening to 15k songs AT THE SAME TIME would be amazing. I think.

Jesus. I need to sit here and ponder that.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 9 December 2005 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

Another easy fix is using a "Y" cable and just plugging it into the AUX plug on the back of most stereos. The sound quality is pretty good, and its 4 dollars instead of 249.

Those iPod docks DO look badass for an office/bedroom setting.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 9 December 2005 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

i've stopped using my home stero system with this thing...im too lazy to keep switching cd's so this is perfect. and its portable so i can move it to any room of the hosue....it also comes with all the plug adapters if you were to go UK to US or vice versa.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Friday, 9 December 2005 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

i used the y cable thing for a while with a seperate remote for the ipod...i got bored with it...it looked ugly.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Friday, 9 December 2005 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

nice. I have a relatively small living area and no other stereo at home than the main one, so the Y works for me.

Options! I love me some OPTIONS!

I wish that there was a laughing smile to attach; the $4 vs. $249 was pretty funny!

I have 3 Bose stereo systems at home; needless to say, I'm addicted to them! One in the bedroom, one in the lounge and one in the office so that I won't be 'out' good quality music. If the XDB sounds 1/2 as good as Bose, than it would be a great way to use her ipod further.

I agree with the "badass" look of the thing!

Or you could be REALLY smart and get het a Creative Zen 20Gb which not only comes with a screen as standard but also shits all over the crappy iPod for SOUND.

SteveJ, Friday, 9 December 2005 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

how's that?

Well, I went to Apple on Michigan Avenue, and they are 100% 'sold out' of the 30 & 60 GB and every single 'skin'. They told me to 'order on-line' as that's the only way that I'd get an ipod. In the meantime, I read SteveJ's post above, and went to the Creative Zen website, and it looks damn good! I can get it through Walmart, and save 50% of the purchase price, plus Walmart has an incredible return policy, just in case Sally wants the 'brand name' of ipod (but I really don't' think she's that snooty.)

Anyone else hear of Creative Zen?
