Is anyone REALLY Swiss or do people just emigrate there/spend large parts of their lives there. Perhaps we're all Swiss in our own little ways.

Matthew Campbell of the Times reports that "prominent feminists" helped to lead the push for the minaret ban, deeming the structures "male power symbols," that represent the oppression of women. ""If we give them a minaret, they'll have us all wearing burqas," a woman named Julia Werner tells the Times, "Before you know it, we'll have sharia law and women being stoned to death in our streets. We won't be Swiss any more."

According to government statistics, fewer than 13 per cent practise their religion. None of the country's mosques, including the four that have minarets, broadcast the call to prayer in public.

Just don't quite get how/why there was a referendum on this given what seems such minimal impact.

mdskltr (blueski), Monday, 30 November 2009 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

it must be said that the oppressive nature of Swiss culture has produced some of the best noise music ever: Voice Crack, G*Park, Sudden Infant, Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock, Dave Phillips, Schimpfluch Collective. If it wasn't a stifling consumerist snob-zone of the highest order, there wouldn't be such wonderfully perverse outcasts inside it!

twice boiled cabbage is death, Monday, 30 November 2009 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

when i first read about this in the Globe & Mail a commenter was saying that this was actually due to some super strict building regulations that they have there. i'm not in any position to confirm or deny that - but i'm curious if that was the case why no article i've seen has mentioned it.

he just as easily could have been just using the building codes to justify his prejudices too.

Switzerland has got to be one of the least culturally influential countries in Western Europe. Yes it's got a small population, but so has Belgium and I reckon I could name loads more Belgian writers, musicians, artists etc than Swiss

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 31 May 2018 00:33 (seven years ago)

I'd say Rousseau, Jung and Godard are a fairly influential trio. I suspect there's a lot of Swiss writers/artists who people don't know are Swiss - a bit like being Welsh. Dieter Moebius from Cluster was Swiss, for instance.

Poisoned by Johan's pea soup. (Tom D.), Thursday, 31 May 2018 07:05 (seven years ago)

There was a piece on Jacob Burckhardt in The Guardian only yesterday.

I'd second Tom's point that there are a lot of Swiss artists who people don't know are Swiss: Giacometti, Paul Klee, H.R. Giger, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Jean 'Hans' Arp, Marianne von Werefkin etc. I also wouldn't underestimate the influence of writers such as Dürrenmatt, Frisch or (going back a bit) Rousseau and Keller.

Portsmouth Bubblejet, Thursday, 31 May 2018 08:08 (seven years ago)

Klee is one of the greatest painters of the 20th c for me. I fell in love with his work when I was a Textile Design student and some of my tutors were very dismissive of him, like his work was very pretty, but too decorative and feminine to be real art - at least that was the impression I got from memory.
