A thread for events and FAPS and such in Brighton (UK). Let the seaside frolics commence.

Archel (Archel), Sunday, 11 December 2005 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

I nearly went to Brighton this week but only got as far as Chichester.

robster (robster), Sunday, 11 December 2005 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

Come all the way next time :)

Really I have started this thread to tell people about the new pub quiz in aid of the Peace and Environment Centre, at the Robin Hood off Norfolk Square. First one tomorrow, about 7.30. I'll be there, join me!

Archel (Archel), Sunday, 11 December 2005 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

I shall try harder next time. BTW are you going to see B**** & S******** at the Dome in Feb?

Don't think I can make the quiz :(

robster (robster), Sunday, 11 December 2005 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

They're being supported by Brakes, too.

Quiz sounds good, I'll come next week Archel! But I'm playing the blues - well, a couple of songs - at the Bath Arms tomorrow though, gotta learn some words. Should be easy though right?

Well, the first line of the blues, is always sung a second time.
I said, the first line of the blues...

angle of d... (tingo), Sunday, 11 December 2005 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

Hope the blues went well Tim! Quiz was initially shambolic but ultimately great. Second place and 4 bottles of wine thank you very much :)

It will be every three weeks I think.

I'm not going to B&S I don't think - my nights out at the moment stretch to approx. £1...

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

I missed this! Give us a question Archel!

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

Playing the Blues? Come on, Dateh! That's easy. You don't need words, you just sing

Mah woman left me, drink a bottle of gin
Mah woman left me, drink a bottle of gin
Mah woman left me, drink a bottle of gin
If Ah find her, I gonna kick her teeth right in

ad infinitum and come up with clever rhymes for what you will do to her based on what you've been drinking.

Kate Classic (kate), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

Mm, gin.

I can't remember any of the questions now! Oh yes, there was a 'real names' round in which we got George Orwell, Bob Dylan, Marilyn Monroe, Bono and a couple of others but couldn't remember Adam Ant, Prince or David Bowie. Got this wrong too: 'who has been credited as either singer or writer on over 100 UK chart hits?' Amazing we came second really.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

OOOOOOOOOOOH! I KNOW! I KNOW! I KNOW!

(knocks over pint)

(gets thrown out)

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

(Are they doing it again pre-Chrishmush?)

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

Haha some people did get thrown out last night. They did not Honour The Quiz enough (and kept on swearing loudly like they'd just discovered how).

I think the next one will be 2 Jan now?

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, if my liver is willing and my legs are able, I might be up for that. But if anyone fancies quaffing a festive pint or two before that, lemme know!

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

Stuart Goddard! I'm such a big Adam Ant fan, I got white makeup for a line across my nose when I was 11. I gotsta come to the next quiz, I gotsta.

The blues went well enough thanks. I need more confidence in my delivery though. And yeah, thanks Kate. My song turned out along these lines:

Sometimes I think my babe's too good to die
Sometimes I think my babe's too good to die
Sometimes I think my babe's too good to die
Sometimes I think she should be buried alive

angle of d... (tingo), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
Happy new year Brighton!

So, I am moving back to Preston Circus tomorrow - Rosehill FAP to celebrate at some point in the next week?

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 5 January 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

i went to Brighton after christmas. it was nice. i stayed in a hotel. the bed was hard, and i couldn't sleep.
i visited the Druid's Head Pub or something and the Fish Bowl or some such. i shall return, since much fun was had by all. hoorah!

snowkitten (g-kit), Thursday, 5 January 2006 10:33 (nineteen years ago)

I think the first ever Brighton FAP met at the Fishbowl :)
Matt used to DJ there but they paid him in whisky and his health was beginning to suffer...

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 5 January 2006 10:58 (nineteen years ago)

Hurrah, Preston Circus represent! What street are you moving to?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 5 January 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

St4nley Road (we used to be in Argyle).

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 5 January 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

Same road as Chris TT I think.

So, are you closer to The Duke of Yorks than us? We're about 30 seconds (Be4conf1eld R0ad).

Haven't been to The Rosehill in ages, what's it like at the moment?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 5 January 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

I reckon... 15 seconds from the DoY? :)

The Rosehill seems to occasionally fill with scary rugby types but mostly it's pretty quiet, good jukebox, good pint of Harveys.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 5 January 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

Fishbowl was hella fun. i look forward to returning.

snowkitten (g-kit), Thursday, 5 January 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

I can get to The DOE in 10 seconds if I run :-)

Let me know when the drinks are and I should be abke to pop along.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 5 January 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
I have not organised any drinks :(
But I am probably quizzing at the Roundhill (not the Rosehill) on Sunday if anyone fancies it.

Also, I need restaurant recommendations. I hardly ever go out to eat these days so I'm a bit out of touch, but M just won £80 on his work lottery syndicate so fine dining is back on the agenda for one night only! Any thoughts?

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 11:22 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to be in Brighton this Friday...

Fancy a pint? or maybe archel can fine wine and dine me....... :-D

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yes, I forgot! I can stretch to a fine pint...

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

cor. i might be able to buy two pints even if i manage to sell a surplus ticket. i reckon so.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to be in Brighton too. LET'S DRINK.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

wow what you doing in BRIGHTON rob?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

Goin' to see this band yeah

robster (robster), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

Ah. I thought there was a wrastlin' convention or something...

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

well kate that's where i'm going!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

actually my flatmate and I are going to see WWE RAW this April.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

are there bowling places in brighton? i'm off work that day and so might spend the whole afternoon on the 10 pin

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, afterall, this is a ROLLING brighton thread.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

Also, I need restaurant recommendations

Terre a Terre is always good, and vegetarian. We had a great 3 course meal for £80 on our anniversary last month.

My parents are coming down and treating us to a dinner at The Gingerman at Drakes this Sunday - Madeline and I went to their original restaurant (on Norfolk Place) which was very good - I'll let you know what it's like.

Due South can be good, but has slow service and is inconsistant, Paston Place is widely reckoned to be the best, but you'll need another £40 at least for that. Sevendials is similair to Due South.

If you fancy a cheaper night out, The Argus is running a 'Dine For £10' per person campaign from This Friday. Book early (i.e. this Firday) and you'll be able to have a couple of meals out for £80 including wine and tips! The best ones on the offer are Sevendials and Due South, but you can also go to The Saint, Vanilla, La Marinade, Oki Nami and several others.

You will have to suffer the shame of buying a few copies of The Argus to collect the tokens, but at least you'll be keeping me in a job!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

Hardly ever get out for nice food these days, but when we do, it's Terre a Terre, like what Matt said.

Ken, there is bowling at the Marina. You can get there on the Volks Railway too - cor!

Regarding Sunday - it's my night in while the missus is out, I'm afraid.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

So, who fancies coming to the Kompakt night at The Concorde2 on Sat March 18th?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

I think I need to wait and see how money works out over the next month, but at the moment it's not looking good. Sorry!

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh thanks for the tips Chew, I thought you'd come through for me :)

I am off on Friday too! (After a supervisor meeting in the morning.) I could come bowling maybe. I hate the Marina but if there's a few of us I'd be prepared to make the sacrifice... definitely drinks pre-gig anyway (I'm not going to it).

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

So... this is almost an official FAP then! More solid plans for Friday anyone? When will you get into Brighton ken and rob?

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

i want to get to brighton as soon as i can basically! make a day of it and all, maybe take pix... shall i call you?

also check your emails!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 2 February 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be getting there around 5:30ish.

robster (robster), Thursday, 2 February 2006 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

Cool give me a call when you arrive! (But I haven't had any email from you ken...)

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 2 February 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

oh that's cos i just sent it moments ago

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 2 February 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

what's the cheapest way to travel around btw? on foot i guess but what about buses etc are there like day passes you can get or sommat?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 2 February 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

You can get a day pass to use on any buses for £2.80.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 2 February 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

sweet! i have £2.80! i'll be riding on brighton buses for a hobby tomorrow i think

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 2 February 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

And if you do go bowling, there is a bus that goes straight from the station to the Marina! (No 7.) Ooh and if you come on Thameslink I think you can do a Railbus thing where £2 extra on the train fare gets you on all the buses too.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 2 February 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
Where's good to eat in Brighton?

Also, anyone around on the 25th?

robster (robster), Thursday, 2 March 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

I finally found out why it's called The Vogue Gyratory the other day.

It's where a cinema called 'The Vogue' used to be, and cars, er, gyrate around it now.

Your night sounds good, but it would be better if it was in town!

I gave the Turkish shop some custom the other day, but there's not enough fresh produce to persuade me to go there more often. I really want something like the Taj Mahal over this side of town.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I think that might work, maybe cos it's not just totally bizzare. (x-post)

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe a little bazaar though (oh you knew that was coming).

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

x-post

ahh might well move into town when i decide where would be accomdating and have little to no financial risk, i had a enough of trying to play music to please people with financial implications,

now i'd like to play music to please people me included with minimal risk

any ideas...

secondhandnews (secondhandnews), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

Sure, I can understand that.

I can't think of anywhere other than the obvious ones for cheap hire: Prince Albert, Miss Fitzherberts?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

yeah did think about the albert... and penthouse too but thought might be a bit to unselfconscious for there

though seem to have missed miss fitzherberts, am i missing out on somewhere decent?

secondhandnews (secondhandnews), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

Matt has a t-shirt from that line dancing shop!

The new Turkish store looked good, we also went into Expressa video or whatever it's called where you get your film out of a machine and it's like 99p for 6 hours. Lewes Road is teh future! (Maybe.)

Fitzherberts is good, I don't know if they hire out for DJ nights though? The Freebutt? Fringe Bar?

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, take pride in HotHouse Dj-ing histiry. You got paid shitloads, got wankered every night and met drunk and upforit girls. Carolyn is lovely by the way. Say hi.

And I miss the Vogue Gyratory. always found that sign a tiny little bit suggestive when i would see it while cycling down bear road. I miss the bear.

uptoeleven (uptoeleven), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

did the quiz in the bear a few weeks ago, didnt win but their bottle of wine for best team name is like free wine

Out in Falmer again!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 10 November 2006 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

that's what happens when the one of the blokes i running it with lives on campus!

still want to move to town though but far to lazy to get out and ask round, though today is my last day commuting to london before a new job in shoreham so might finally pull my finger out

secondhandnews (secondhandnews), Friday, 10 November 2006 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

who lives on campus?

uptoeleven (uptoeleven), Friday, 10 November 2006 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

Ooooh. Dan lives on campus. Was fun night.

uptoeleven (uptoeleven), Monday, 13 November 2006 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

So anyway, for those unable to view the jpeg it's called Bel Canto: Music Without Borders and is at the Gladstone on the Lewes Road on Friday.

uptoeleven (uptoeleven), Monday, 13 November 2006 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

i can see it nick and i shall be attending

uptoeleven (uptoeleven), Monday, 13 November 2006 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

this thread seems to have dropped out of the "new answers" page, indicative of the fact that no-one other than kelv is really interested. however, because Bel Canto is on this coming Friday i'm reviving it agin to see if any attention can be garnered from anywhere. Archel lives here yes? I'll treat thee to an orange juice if you put in an appearance. it is fortnightly so there'll be others. and i'm hoping to do new year's eve too. that's all i have to say really.

uptoeleven (uptoeleven), Thursday, 16 November 2006 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

I am interested and will consult with husband/unborn child/complaining body about coming along tomorrow, otherwise another time :)

NB. last minute but Kate and I shall be fapping/eating at The George tonight from 6 if anyone fancies it.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 16 November 2006 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, thanks for bumping (heh heh, bumping) this thread.

Brighton, your hipster mortgage boys are so cute. I look forward to drinking with you tonight!

I cannot stay late, as I've just been told I have to horrific Oracle programming at an early hour tomororw. Bah.

Little Star of Bedlam (kate), Thursday, 16 November 2006 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

That would be lovely but maybe am too much of an irregular/invisible ILX-or to involve myself in the intimate environment of a FAP just yet. Would be lovely to meet anyone at the Gladders tomorrow (it's really a very nice pub) and subsequent alternate Fridays though.

uptoeleven (uptoeleven), Thursday, 16 November 2006 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

Bel Canto returns to its old haunt of the Gladstone tonight, despite having found new and more central pastures.
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/7938/934/1600/belcantothesecond.jpg

Tracklistings for one of the buggers from before Christmas can be found here if you scroll down a bit.

P.s. tonight has been deemed to be the 10th one of these and to celebrate this fact we're doign absolutely nothing special except showing the Lion King (poss. with, possibly without subtitles) in the back room.

Will be at the Grand Central next Friday and again on Saturday the 31st.

There's only his right foot left! And I know I said I hated it but it wasn't me guv honest.

Archel, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

Save it for the judge.

I don't think I realised it was Steve Ovett before reading that so I won't really miss it. Preston Park is pretty but not as nice as Queens Park if one was to rank Brighton's parks.

Uptoeleven, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

Preston Park is the only one I've been in. Tell me about Queens Park.

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 6 September 2007 09:16 (eighteen years ago)

Where Preston Park is flat fowery and awash with bowling greens, Queens park has character. it's hilly - kinda like a smaller, tamer version of hampstead heath - with a big old pond and one disused bowling green which we call Islamabad and play crcket on.

So, I've just had a preliminary offer to do a Critical Theory MA at the University of Sussex. Provided it doesn't turn out to be an impossibly stringent conditional one, I will be moving to Brighton at the end of this summer. Me & the mister aren't exactly rolling in cash money, so are there any tips about areas we should be looking at moving to that are reasonably priced for renting? We don't really know anyone, so house sharing is probably not going to be an option.

Also, FAP?

emil.y, Sunday, 9 March 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

Congratumalations! I loved Sussex and am seriously considering abandoning my journalism ambitions to return there to do an international law masters. The only university in English located entirely within a national heritage site. I <3 walking on the downs.

Queens Park would be my location recommendation. Being relatively far from the centre of town (and Hove), and near enough to Whitehawk, it's pretty reasonable as far as rent goes. It's easily within walking distance of anything you might want to walk to, near to my favourite park (see above post) and the beach. It is also whimsically close to an awesome Krazy Golf Course but that may be less of a selling point for you. (FAGOKG?)

Queens Park is also really close to the gay hub of Kemptown and some decent enough pubs.

Oh and St George's church is also pretty local (seen some great gigs there).

Anything else I can help you with?

Upt0eleven, Sunday, 9 March 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, that sounds good. I had a look at some maps online and it doesn't look too far away from anywhere, so if it's cheap enough then that would be ideal. Krazy Golf is not the highest priority, but it can be fun indeed.

In general, what's Brighton like to live in? Nottingham has a fairly close (but not too cliquey) DIY music scene, and I'd like to maybe find some people to make music with... I'm expecting to not have much money for going out, but gigs will always be important.

emil.y, Sunday, 9 March 2008 18:46 (seventeen years ago)

From my perspective Brighton's amazing to live in. I lived there for four years on very little cash and was never bored. (I actually refuse to admit that i've left and am pretty much there every weekend anyway).

It has an amazing live music scene with loads of great little venues like The Prince Albert, the Freebutt (sadly not as good as it used to be having been taken over by some vile company from Southampton), Audio (bit claustrophobic but some decent gigs there), The Hope, The Engine Rooms and various others. Concorde2 is an uhmazin' 600 capacity venue for bigger acts while The Dome caters to mainstream fare and the Brighton Centre to collossuses of the Kanye calibre.

As far as making your own music you will probably find more offers and opportunities there than you can handle. Here is the relevant Gumtree just to start you off. I'm not creative in the slightest but Brighton likes to think of itself as a hive of creativity, which is mostly nice but it does have more than its fair share of pretentious hipsters/scenesters. You just have learn to tune the fuckers out and appreciate the goodness.

Check out this record label run by a very good friend of mine. They work with a lot of really great burgeoning acts and put on some of the most interesting shows in Brighton.

I could go on - and will happily do so if you wanna email me nick dot uptoeleven at gmail dot com - but might leave it there for now.

Upt0eleven, Sunday, 9 March 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

Have mailed you, thanks. Bumping in case any otber Brightonians have anything to add.

emil.y, Monday, 10 March 2008 16:50 (seventeen years ago)

Does that really say 'otber'? Um, I meant 'other'.

Nobody else has any thoughts or advice about this?

emil.y, Friday, 4 April 2008 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

five months pass...

Have lived in Brighton for approximately 3 weeks now and, unemployment aside, am loving it to bits. All my jobhunting has been done via free wi-fi in relatively nice pubs (special kudos to the rather lovely Foundry) and the gig venues are pretty decent, although the Freebutt's pillar is a bit odd (i.e. right in front of the stage), but as a tally it permits me to stand up front without pissing anyone off. The Hope is a weird one - a bit towny downstairs, but some excellent indiepop-type gigs in the very nice venue upstairs.

Record shop wise, Edgeworld is stunning for the slightly more avant/obscure side, where Resident and Rounder cover the main gamut of stuff quite well, with Borderline covering your discerning 60s/70s/kraut/folk/tropicalia/jazz angle pretty nicely. And the Wax Factor place on Trafalgar Street is pretty impressive in the amount of second hand vinyl it has, although it's almost too much to wade through.

In other words, loving it!

Are there still any good record shops open in Brighton? I thought I had read that some stuff has closed but can't remember the specifics...

Resident Records on Kensington Gardens is great for new release stuff, your P4k and more out there stuff.

Borderline Records on Gardner Street near the Komedia is superb for reissues, 60s, 70s, Krautrock, folk, jazz etc.

Across The Tracks on Sydney Street and Wax Factor on Trafalgar Street/Tidy Street are good, big second-hand shops with varied stock worth spending some time with.

A bit further out, the Monkey Music Emporium is off London Road (on Baker Street), is full of rarer/expensive stuff from all eras, it has an outstanding avant-garde/experimental section, if you want stuff on Incus or half The Residents back catalogue this is your place.

Rarekind on Trafalgar Street has more hip-hop/beats friendly stuff, is good pricewise. One Stop Records is a newish place above Wolf & Gypsy Clothing on Sydney Street, this has some good stuff - especially worth looking through the 7"s in the corner, although few bargains are to be had here, there is a lot of good stuff.

In short. YES! Although the loss of Rounder leaves a massive hole, and the loss of Edgeworld (subsequently Endless) of Kensington Gardens means the friendliest of the shops to hang out in has now gone :(
