Er, football that is. Which teams are going to get relegated from the Premiership. As usual it's looking a bit tight.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

After tonight Southampton look as though they'll be ok. I'd go for Leicester,Derby and either Everton or Boro (sorry Michael but probably Everton).

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I AM A SLOOOBERFOX

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

S'ok, Billy - it's bound to happen eventually (Southampton the only other everpresent Premiership club with a worse record than us since The Dawn of Sky), but, funnily enough, I don't think this time.

I'm going to stick with my pre-season prediction of Blackburn Rovers (lost six of their last seven; penultimate game of the season is at Goodison, intriguingly), plus Boro and Leicester. Derby will somehow escape again and Ipswich have clearly turned the corner since their little European escapade ended. Bolton will steady the ship before too long and finish mid-table. EFC no better than 13th, but (players coming back from injury an' all) not a lot worse.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My prediction >>> bye bye premiership May 2002 : rock bottom Leicester, also Derby - if you cannot beat Bristol rovers at home - what hope of getting results and Bolton - they will slump down again.

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Boro, Derby & Southampton (I said Cov were omnipresent and look at them. Anyway I like the idea of Gordon Strachan being the new Alan Ball).

Pete, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fuckin Liverpool at this rate.

At the end of the day (ah football cliches) you've got to hand it to Ipswich (more) they've really dug out results (yes) when the chips were down. (thank you).

I don't think Everton will go. I hope Boro go. That chairman is such a knob for not sacking Robbo ages ago. They never recovered from that. He deserves everything he gets for having more money than sense.

Ronan, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my dream relegation of possibles = Bolton, Boro and Leicester, the first two I can't stand, the third are just rubbish.

chris, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sunderland could become the surprise relegated team this year. Especially, if they end up selling Phillips (could happen). Derby and Leicester look probable.

jel, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

very good point jel, Laslandes hasn't exactly been the Quinn replacement they hoped he would be, instead he's been rubbish. Strange considering I always thought he looked more than useful when watching the French league. (ooh this gives me an idea for a thread)

chris, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought Laslandes would be great cos he was class in Championship Manager and they have been right before. I remember Anelka being amazing in the version about 3 or 4 years ago before he'd actually got good in real life and we were all "anelka is shit, this is a silly game". Oh did we eat our words.

Ronan, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Leicester look woefully bad and will finish bottom. Ipswich could well escape, especially as they'll probably beat the Mighty Spurs on Saturday again. The other two will be Bolton and Middlesboro.FACT!

Jonnie, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where the fuck did the Dave Bassett=Good manager rumour get going.

Ronan, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, the media love Bassett because he represents a side of football they fear is being swept away by continental ponciness. He did do a decent job at Palace... before bailing out when things were going good (hey, there's a familiar line). But basically he stands for the yeoman values of going in with both feet. As the eulogiser of the Ugly Game, does Mr Hopkins have a take on Harry?

Mark Morris, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blimey, Jonnie agrees with me on footie! and most of mine was based on petty prejudice too.

Basset is 57, he looks good for it I must say. Doesn't stop him being a shoddy manager, when he was at Sheff Utd we used to go and watch when Chesterfield were away (long distance) and the football his team played there was horrible, basically boot it up to Dean and Agana and hope they bundle it in.

He is a bit of a footie dinosaur isn't he?

chris, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No I don't.

Jonnie, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes you do Polar boy, we're both tipping Bolton (boo) Boro and Leicester for the drop.

chris, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh.

Jonnie, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Chris: any particular reason you hate Bolton W? Can't just be the four points they've taken off the Reds this season? I have a soft spot for them as Burnden Park (yes, I know it's probably an Asda now, or something) is one of only five league grounds I've visited outside Goodison.

Riise: that's *two* contenders for goal-of-the-season from the lad. Remarkable.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aaaaargh, can of worms.

jonnie, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mike, step away slowly, very slowly, make no sudden moves.

It's not at all to do with footie tho.

chris, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why is Dave Bassett known as 'Harry'?

Andrew L, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know, and I can't find the answer on Google. that annoys me.

chris, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can in about 20 seconds because I am brilliant. He's "known as `Harry' for pulling off Houdini-style escapes at various clubs"

N., Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think that's arse, sorry Nick, but I do know that he's been known as Harry since his playing days, back in the day.

chris, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I reckon Derby are looking ripe for the drop. Anyone see them in the FA Cup? A team in freefall if e'er I saw one.

Will, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, OK. You're right, though lots of websites say the same thing. In fact his autobiography reveals that which when he was a kid there were lots of boys called David, so to differentiate him he became "Harry’s Boy" after his Dad, Harry, which eventually became just "Harry".

N., Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

lots of websites are lazy Nick, you however are not and found me good info, well done you.

chris, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I shouldn't have been so credulous, though. I would be more rigourous in a professional context, honest.

N., Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't beat yourself up about it Nick, it's done, and ended up being right.

chris, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Chris: Sorry... I've clearly missed something along the way. I won't force the issue.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My big problem with D Bassett is that I'm not sure he's even very effective at what he does. His rep for amazing escapes is surely tarnished by now. I have mixed feelings about his Crazy Gang us- against-the-world approach: it may well produce results in terms of players working hard, but it always seems to result in tedious tales of cutting up designer suits or something. Yawno. (Someone remind me to tell them my Imre Varadi story next time they see me in the pub)

I like beautiful, incisive play as much as I love hard, nasty play. It's ineffective football I despise.

Mr. Bassett is, of course, responsible for my favourite ever football quotation.

I have been tipping Derby to go down for the last three years. I will be right sometime.

Tim, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I really liked it when Derby were good. They were so likeable what with Baiano and all.

Ronan, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, but it's not easy to warm to the character of Mr. Ravanelli, is it?
