UK credit card advice.

I want to get a new credit card so I can transfer the balance on my current one (about £1,500) to it and rid myself of Barclaycard once and for all.

Obviously I need 0% on balance transfers (for at least 6 months) and it'd be nice on purchases too, just in case (although I'm not planning on using it particularly).

A low APR thereafter would also be a bonus, although I could always get another transfer to another 0% balance thing come September or whenever.

What do people recommend? Preferably something I can apply online for today...

Halifax One Card
0% interest on balance transfers for the first 12 months, 0% interest on purchases for the first 3 months, and an excellent typical rate of 15.9% APR (variable). A handling fee of up to 2% applies per balance transfer.

It's got it all packed in.

I think Capital One do a 0% on balance transfers. I applied for one of their cards online and it was sent through within a few days. I don't know what their APR is like though - I guess it might be quite high, but I only use their card as a glorified debit card and pay the bill in full each month so I've never accrued any charges.

Mint offer 0% till September 2006 on balance and purchases, and APR is typical 14.9% afterwards. Same 2% on balance.

Any advance?

My rather boring advice is chop up your card and arrange a loan with the bank to pay off the debt. You'd be paying off £50 a month for the next two years, which is a drag, but at least you wouldn't have that card burning a hole in your wallet anymore. I finally did this myself about 6 years ago after years of dodging the issue and having things get worse and worse financially, and I'm pretty glad I did it too.

My advice is to whore it around 0% cards for the rest of your life. I haven't paid interest on a card for about 5 years and I get an interest free loan for my holiday every year.

That certainly is sound advice, Nick, and I'd be more than willing to take it up except that I'm still paying off my graduate loan and will be for another 2 years. It probably still makes better sense than piling £100 a month into a credit card, I'd just feel awkward about getting another loan on top of student and graduate ones I already have. Hmmm...

I want another credit card too (Barclaycard arbitrarily raising their APR to 21.9% after 13 years of loyal service - suck me, Barclays) but more important to me is any kind of cashback or benefits offer. Any suggestions? Amex I think has the best rate but it's not accepted everywhere so that's out. I also want to boycott Mastercard because of their shocking monopolising of 2006 World Cup business.
