A pop at racism

MAKING MUSIC: Bill Singh and Rik Waller Cm10541/2

POP Idol's famous fat bloke, Rik Waller, has gone from entertaining the nation on Saturday nights to promoting ethnic diversity in north Kent.

He travelled to Gravesend to plug an ethnic diversity conference for teenagers organised by North West Kent Racial Equality Council and Kent County Council.

Teenagers will get to discuss issues such as drug and alcohol misuse, the Cliffe airport proposals, sporting achievements and careers in the Kent fire brigade.

They will also enjoy performances by bhangra singer Jassi Sidhu and will get to hear songs from Rik's debut album.

The event is on November 8 at Northfleet Youth and Community Centre, in Hall Road. Admission is free but places must be pre-booked by calling 01474 369329.

Reminds me of the old Popbitch story about his video

>> Rik Waller: an apology <<

Director suffers attack of shame
Hopesprings writes:
"If you can endure watching the Rik Waller video
long enough to get to the bathroom scene, the
eagle-eyed among you may have noticed the words
'I'm sorry' scrawled in the misted-up bathroom
mirror. The director himself wrote those words:
he needed the job but he wanted to make sure his
friends got the message".

Strangely...

Sometimes I feel nostalgic for when music had more of a mystique to it for me, and sometimes I blame youtube and streaming services and social media for demystifying it, but some of that may also just be that I'm 41 and not 22.

Still, there's something about the fact that there's no video of, say, David Gilmour, that starts with him saying "Hey everyone" and ends with "and be sure to smash that like button and subscribe to my channel."

Or maybe someone long dead would be a better example, Hendrix or something.

Also feel kind of nostalgic for bloated recording budgets feeding sonic grandeur and experimental excess.

Not to mention bloated Music Video budgets.
Although I feel like there still might be some of that in things like K-Pop.

I do feel quite a bit of nostalgia for the older internet. Geocities, livejournal, neopets, mp3.com*, a less corporate vibe overall (I say as I list companies, I realise). Also more text, less video-oriented internet.

*I've said before but bandcamp reminds me of the best things about the days of mp3.com, part of why I love it so much.

We have snow today and I'm reading text based Internet like it's the old days!

I reckon when this thread started I was obsessed with GTA San Andreas and Half Life 2. It was maybe my last year of proper smoking.
