Is this a scam?

Ok, so I was looking for yoga stuff on ebay and I cam across a product being offered from the UK, and although the user does have a %100 positive feed back rating, I am feeling a little bit sketchy about their story...cuz how does he find things in the attic if he can't get in the house? Also, why would a boy with no money for a ramp have so much yogo stuff in his attic?

I agree, yoga is a skam, but so is not using the short hand for full stop(.-.-.-). In other words, I have just schooled you Mr. Morse.

Talking of scams, I got a text message saying something like "PARTY on the 27th, let me know by 22nd, see you there" the other day, it was from a regular mobile phone number though not one of those 5 digit premium codes, so assuming it is a scam (which I am), how does it work? You reply and they start bombarding you with premium rate texts or something?

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

A definite scam, the dodgy dealers have moved away from selling plasma tvs, ipods and laptops and realised that yoga bricks is where the big money's at.

snowkitten (g-kit), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps somebody just texted the wrong number?

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

That's what they WANT you to think. So you text back saying "sorry, who are you?" then they charge you a million pounds.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

Maybe they actually want you to come to the party. There'll be lots of hot indie girls there who'll laugh at your jokes, and you'll have a great time. Then, ZING! The next party'll cost you!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Call the number from a landline...

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Call the number from a telephone box.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Reverse the charges.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Find out who owns the number through your telephone operator, then call up a couple of your shadier friends, bring baseball bats with you and hang around wherever the texter lives, and when he comes home beat him up and shout, "That's what you get for trying to scam ME! Colonel Poo!"

FUUUUCK

Just got a call from my bank that somebody has been scamming my debit card.

Yesterday they tried to buy $1045 in Harry Potter sculptures from the White Wizard Toys in Schaumberg, Illinois. Additionally, they charged me over $90 in protein powder.

Bank closed card and flagged further purchasing, but toys and protein powder have already gone through so account will be drained and I will have to wait for them to refund the money, also will incur overdraft fees.

FUUUUUUUCK

remy bean, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

WAAAAAAAIIIT they'll have to refund the overdraft fees as well, you can't be paying for someone else's use/withdrawals.

Laurel, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

yes, but only after the purchases post and i get a statement to prove the fraud.

remy bean, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

grrrrrr

remy bean, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

That seems unnecessarily burdensome for the customer. My bank refunded the money & overdraft charges on "credit", pending their investigation of the fraud. It was available like the next day.

Laurel, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

on the bright side, the things they bought are pretty funny.

UH YEAH LEMME GET LIKE 50 OF THEM HARRY POTTERS STATUES AND UH SOME PROTEIN POWDER

jhøshea, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

my picture of the scammer is, like, a really huge nerd.

Alphascript Publishing. They publish wikipedia articles as books, then sell them for £30/$70. Amazon has 46,747 of their books for sale at the moment. AFAIK this isn't illegal but still, its pretty terrible!

This guy is a treat:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/14/business/media/14link.htm

(a cleverer one than the Alphascript "editors", but then this one really seems to think he's doing something inventive and worthwhile, and not just scamming people... much)

I see these scam publishers have moved on from printing Wikipedia articles and have started reprinting out-of-copyright works from Google Books - except I guess the scan images are still copyright Google, so they're using the really bad OCR text instead. Try learning German from this $27.95 reprint of a 1914 book:
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=dmS6tXf5gsYC&lpg=PP1&pg=PA1#v=onepage&q&f=false

While looking for the price on Amazon I found like 20 other 2010 editions of books about German by the same author, some of which had a lot more professional-looking covers. Not sure if I ever bought a book online that I hadn't seen in person or had personally recommended to me, but the days when you might have got a readable book for your money by doing so are definitely over.

what is he like? the guy's a juggalo, man (a passing spacecadet), Sunday, 17 October 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

After reading the second paragraph on page 1, I'm pretty sure I'm fluent in German now. Dankefj!
