A tin of Quality Street

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Last year I got her a pretty expensive spa treatment certificate that she still hasn't used, so this year the old bag gets nothing.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

a car spoiler

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

I embroidered a pillowcase for her.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

A Gotan Project CD and I haven't got anything else yet, maybe something for the house. I am trying to trendyise my parents music taste. I tested the water with Jon Hopkins, then moved on to Global Communication. I am now going to try Gotan Project and Hotel Costes. By this time next year Richie Hawtin.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Cripes, I can't imagine my mum listening to techno. Try her with some Cristian Vogel first maybe.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

no my parents like no music whatsoever, my dad liked Nana Mouskouri (sp?) and the Beach Boys, and I think Simon and Garfunkel, back in the 80s.

so I am trying to build a bridge of common interest and get them nice background music, especially for when they go away, I think they appreciate the effort, and they do actually like the CDs so far. they'll never like techno really, but they do like stuff I've got them so far.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

I got my mom several of the ocean liner books from Dover Publications.

http://store.yahoo.com/doverpublications/0486245748.html

I also ordered myself a couple of clip art books, because shipping's free if your order is over $50. Amazing clip art—old engravings. So if your mom is into graphic art, go for it.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

marks & spencer vouchers, she'll love you for ever!

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

a car spoiler - !! She having one of those neon lights, too? Does she drive like a twat?

Actually, I can imagine my mom liking Gotan Project. She likes Zero 7 and other Starbucks shit like that.

Mestema (davidcorp), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Nothing yet. I think I'm going to get her a posh facial (she will use it).

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

I sorta got my gran into A Red Planet Compilation, I was visiting one day still half out my tits from clubbing the night before. I put the CD on and raved to my gran about how 'nice' it was, how 'mellow' and she agreed.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

My mum, bless her heart, has worked out that a day out from where she lives to that Lunding on the train is a perfectly feasible thing, and a thing she rather enjoys. So she's getting one of those memberships of the Tate which gets her +1 into any of the paying shows.

I suspect that it would be cheaper to just pay for her to get tickets to any show she actually sees, but I think she'll enjoy being a member, having a membership card, that sort of thing. And she'll get their quarterly magazine posted to her.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

And you can dress up as your mum and use her card.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

beth, i almost started a thread on dover publications the other day. i was obsessed with their paper doll books when i was a kid.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

i got my mom a print of a photograph i saw hanging in a gallery in woodstock a few months ago. the photograph is of some brightly painted houses on a canal in italy, with a boat tied up in front. on the boat, there are some decals which spell out "alice," which is her name.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Between them, Ronan and Alba have completely spoiled my Christmas.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

lauren-I got my mom the Pride & Prejudice dover paper dolls last year as a joke gift and she loved them.
This year I got her some Godiva chocolates, Foyle's War set 1, a swallow-shaped tree ornament, and I am still trying to find a pair of earrings.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

I never know what to buy, so I put off buying anything until the day before. Not a good course of action.

Lars and Jagger (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

I am trying to trendyise my parents music taste.

Trust me, it won't work. I tried in vain to do this with my dad. It was rather pointless to try this with my mum cause the only music she listened to was Japanese 60s vocal muzak.

I haven't bought anything yet. They have everything already. :-( I'm hoping my baby'll be here so that I can say: here's your present, you're GRANDPARENTS now. :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

mom is going to get dover's new illustrated old-timey hard-bound edition of p&p. she's an austen scholar and will hopefully get a kick out of it.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

I got my mom the Have a Nice Day '70s box set. She's been listening to way too much Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse and Gwen Stefani these days and I need to de-trendify her.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

A bird-watchers' guide to Belize, in the hopes of prompting a family vacation there. And an ornament.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

So far the only thing I've got for Mumward is a fantastic slipper cushion from Ikea. It's a cushion with two holes in it, so you can stick your feet inside and keep them warm in the lovely soft cushion. I might keep it for myself actually.

James Ward (jamesmichaelward), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

I went shopping for a xmas pressie at lunch time, spent two hours wandering the shops, came back with a cone of chips (not for my mum).

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Which CD did you get your mom, Ned?

An In the Nursery disc. She's quite the addict. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

The cushion thing sounds great, but what happens when you forget it's there, think you're wearing actual slippers, and attempt to walk somewhere?

I've got my mum Donovan's autobiography, and my mum-in-law Just Like Mother Used to Make which I desperately hope won't be construed as an insult, since the recipes are very much NOT like she used to make. But she was admiring it at our house, so...

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

i think i promised my dad some cds, but i'm not sure what outta our catalog he'd even like.

btw ronan, new gotan cd next spring.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

We finally gave in and got her what she's been asking for years as a joint birthday and christmas present, a trip in a hot air balloon

We bought Chris's mum £27 worth of rococco chocolates etc.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, I fancy a 'slipper cushion'.

My mum has one of those big electric slipper things that plug into the wall....

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Mmm, I covet that slipper cushion, but the one I saw was in the kids' bit and I have big feet. Did you find a magickal bigfoot version or does your Mum have ickle plateser?

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Nothing yet, but I'm going to buy her a pay-as-you-go phone and something else, as yet undetermined.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I asked my mom what she wanted for Christmas, as she already has a lot of things, in a very tiny house...(all of which will be my things at some point, which makes gift giving weird)...and she said "All I really want is for my children to visit me more often."
Emotional blackmail! Cheapskate daughter! I have purchased a set of little cards, and written in each one a date (or two) that we will have, according to the month - including helping with cleaning her garden (May), driving her to see her grandkids (February), lunch and a movie (January), etc.
I mean, it's things I already do, but it seemed like a nice way to honor her request and avoid buying more stuff for the person who has too much stuff.
One of the "dates" is spending a day catalouging all of the antiques and "family" stuff with her, which she has wanted to do for two years because:"Nobody knows what these things are! If I died tomorrow, you would never know what these things are!"
So, maybe I'm a cheapskate, but it seemed like a nice way to resolve the traditional, annual conundrum.
On a separate note, my mother once gave me a sweater I had given her, (two years later), as a Christmas gift. And her gifts can be very weird-obvious things that she purchased for $1.00 at the thrift store.
I told her that I want: a kitten. Christmas should be exciting!
Also, her birthday is 12/24, so she'll get something nice for that-earrings, or maybe a sweater?!

aimurchie (aimurchie), Thursday, 15 December 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

I was going to get my mom a cashmere sweater, but she said she didn't want one because cashmere is so hard to take care of. This is what I'm working with, people.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 15 December 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

i got her rough stone rolling by robert bushman

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 15 December 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

My mother is 81 years old. She has not the slightest desire or use (not to mention space) for more things in her life. She's been busily divesting herself of objects.

I have purchased some chocolate truffles, a few used books I think she'll enjoy reading, and I plan to write a very loving card to go with them. It will say (among other things) that she may throw away the books if she wishes.

Aimless (Aimless), Thursday, 15 December 2005 06:33 (twenty years ago)

Nothing, my family don't celebrate Christmas.

.....

YAY!

The Other Kate (papa november), Thursday, 15 December 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

Aimurchie, it's weird, isn't it, when you're aware that all of the things in your parents' house is going to come down to you in the end. My mother in law keeps reminding us of this fact (to the point where she will point out the things that my husband will inherit when she dies. The woman is not 60 yet, I should point out) so I feel weird buying her things at all. This year I have bought her time also. I am taking her to a lunchtime Mozart concert and out to lunch and a little shopping in the sales in the middle of January. It should be nice.
I bought my Mam a couple of books and a voucher for a major DIY chain because she's doing loads of work in the house at the moment and I thought she would like a hand.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

My mum totally loves Richie Hawtin!

My parents live in the outback and love, love, love going to Miss Maud's whenever they venture into the big smoke (Perth, Aus). So I bought them a pricey Miss Maud voucher. (I know vouchers sound a bit lame, but seriously - they're gonna be so excited about this. Plus it means I don't have to pay ridiculous amounts of money in postage trying to send a huge gift home so there :p)

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

Mom: some shopping excitement at her favorite store and some chocolates. Next year, I hope they've got the shipping laws sorted out so I can send her a case of wine.

Mom-in-law: Booksfree subscription continuation. Something else too, but her son will have to think of it.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 15 December 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

I love how thread title warns you off in case you are, actually, someone's mom.

Gravel Workelsworth, Thursday, 15 December 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

I just realised that Ste dude was totally taking the piss. Weak!

(or is he actually pimping his momz ride?)

Mestema (davidcorp), Thursday, 15 December 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

ah so it was a shite joke. at least i'm HAPPY!

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 15 December 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

I usually get my momma a big flannel nightgown with long, ruffled sleeves and a high collar to keep warm in her coooooold house -- also because she won't spend the $ on herself, the silly goose. I send her Tasha Tudor books and children's reading materials & songbooks all year long so Christmas is kind of a bonus.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 15 December 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

I made her a hat and some socks, and I bought her some old gardening books and a big box of gum and some various things from the $1 section of Target.

im trying to figure out what to get the old man for christmas now.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Accentmonkey- that DOES make me feel better! Since I'm doing 12 months of dates, and kind of making it a fun present at the same time. My mom is 73 this year, her sisters are 9 and 11 years older, and both have cancer, both which are probably terminal, So she's in a hard place.
The "recording of every single thing she has stored, while she describes the objects importance: within the family and American and Modern European history" will be amazing. I think I'm going to ask her if I can record our conversations. It would be wonderful for her grandchildren to hear them someday.
I can just tell her I have to record it on tape in case the Antique Roadshow shows up.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Saturday, 17 December 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

My mother has, bizarrely, started to watch entirely too much tv. This never used to be the case, but when ya go over to her place now, it's fucking ALWAYS ON, whether she's watching it or not. So, for her kitchen (where I'm usually forever turning off her pint-sized tv), I got her a very stylish white tivoli PAL radio (see pic). We have one ourselves, and we love it. I'm thinking of glueing the dial to either Air America or NPR or something, just so she doesn't listen to fuckin' Don Imus on it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 17 December 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

I think now I've bought my mum enough presents for Christmas:

* A box set of the St Trinians films
* the DVD of 80s telly series The Box Of Delights
* a fossilised fish

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Saturday, 17 December 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Ohno, my dad listens to Don Imus. I couldn't figure out why he bashed his own party nearly as much as the GOP and thought John McCain walked on water. Now I blame the I-Man.

dar1a g (daria g), Saturday, 17 December 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

If I get around to it I might get her a gift certificate to beauty salon and/or some old-timey licorice.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 18 December 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

i bought my mom a spice rack, which she needed. then she bitched me out cuz she was hoping i'd get her jewelry and not, you know... something she needed.

I made my mom a "best of your son", i.e. a cd of passable recordings I'm on with various bands from the last three years. Also some bath stuff.

Mom's also getting a Street Atlas/GPS thing for the laptop, which should help them when my folks get lost on another National Lampoon roadtrip.
