German Christmas Market

There's one in the town.

Sausage stalls, handmade Christmas decorations, hand-knitted itchy woollen hats, pretty little handblown ornaments.

Pots of steaming goulash (not really German, but), buckets of sweeties, hot dripping garlic bread.... much much tweeness.

Cheap and tacky or a Christmas staple?

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

It's all about the gluhwein, innit? And sausages, obv.

Falling down the stairs again (noodle vague), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

Mmmm, mulled wine. The whole place smells of Christmas...

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

Glühwein!

haha xpost

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and score some decent lebkuchen. The ones I got from Lidl are a bit sub-par.

Falling down the stairs again (noodle vague), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

There’s one in Manchester, there great. The beer is cheaper than the bars, and the food is of a good standard. I like them as the remind me of holidaying in Austria.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

Delicious. I also love the Swedish Glogg, I bought a few bottles from Ikea to tide me through Christmas but I'm on my last one after distributing them to family and friends.

Sainsburys sell a handy little 'mulled wine spices' sachet. I think you just sit the little bag in your choice of red wine whilst simmering it, then add fruit etc. I may give it a try.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm happy that I'm stuck in the shop all day and that I don't need to pass that XMas Market every day. Then again I'd love some bratwurst. Yum yum.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

We've had one of those sachets sat in the cupboard for a couple of years. Aldi sell gluhwein in bottles, which is why i've never bothered with the sachet.

mmmmmmm, bratwurst.

Falling down the stairs again (noodle vague), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

Hot and Spicy Garlic Bratwurst. I know that I'll spend a fortune on sausages if I go near that market again.

We bought a wooden cat for Mr R's mum. The stallholder told us that the wood was called scwar. I have no idea if this is spelt correctly or if it's even true. It's a pretty ornament though.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

it's because glasgow is twinned w/ nuremberg (as well as twinned w/ havana, turin, etc, etc)

don't think much of it, really

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Penis, NV (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Why should kids miss out on the spicy, vitamin C-y goodness of booze?

Falling down the stairs again (noodle vague), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

i like the wilford brimley guy in the background.

Penis, NV (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

"There's a little German in all of us"

I wonder how true this statement is.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

allyzay knows a little german

Penis, NV (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

I brough back some Finnish Brandy Glogg from HElsinki, twice the alcohol, twice the fun.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

I fancy some of that action.

I don't know any little Germans.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

Udo Kier?

Falling down the stairs again (noodle vague), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

Nah, not an acquaintance of mine.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Went to the Glesca one on saturday and had a big sausage. It was lovely. Mulled wine was good too.

I lol'd when I saw the calzone stand and considered doing a Costanza.

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

I liked the little finger puppets.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

The best one I've been to is in Lincoln. However, it's only on for four days, and it's always HUGELY overcrowded.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Ha! Yes, I went visit my best mate in Lincoln last weekend and she went on a massive Christmas market rant. She used the phrase "bloody Christmas tourists" the same venom I reserve for saying things like "bloody Italian backpackers" when stuck on Oxford Street.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

I have to admit, I am planning to go Christmas shopping in Lincoln on Saturday. However, I don't usually go to the Christmas market because it's SO busy. Did she tell you the full horror of pedestrian one-way systems, and no parking within several miles of the city?

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

"There's a little German in all of us"

Well I know I have Austrian in me, my gran was Austrian.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

i have austrian blood as well!

Penis, NV (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

She works for the local paper, so she's well up on all of that.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

What I remember from German Christmas markets is that smell of roast almonds everywhere.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, the Echo? A friend of mine said her dream job would be there - I'm not entirely sure why.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

penis, tell more. where in austria?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

So it's not worth going to the market in Lincoln? :(
Every year we talk about going and then don't bother.

Falling down the stairs again (noodle vague), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

Yes, the Echo. Apparently the market is lovely, she's just all resentful because it's too close to her house and their road gets sealed off and the loud hailer man wakes them up at weekends.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

penis, tell more. where in austria?

not sure exactly. i think it's just one set of great-grandparents, so it's not like i have a very strong sense of my austrian heritage.

Penis, NV (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it is worth going to Lincoln, it's just a bit stressful.

(at least the park and ride carpark this year was at the Lincolnshire Showground, which would have been ideal for you, Noodle, as it's north of the city on the A15)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I know it. I think Mrs V will be doing her best to avoid driving for the next couple of weekends. Hull's a nightmare at the moment.

Falling down the stairs again (noodle vague), Thursday, 15 December 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

We went on a coach trip to the Rhine/Mosel valleys the other week and visited 4 over two days. They were of varying quality, but the standards of food and drink were much higher than the ones you get in this country: glühwein in a number of varieties including a white riesling one, one with advocaat added and one with cassis liquer added; and better eats including currywurst and bockwurst, reibekuchen (potato fritter things with apple puree), mushrooms with a strange white sauce and these fermented dough dumpling things with cherry filling and vanilla sauce.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 15 December 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

My mouth is watering. The one in Glasgow has Currywurst too. I must try it.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 15 December 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

don't try it

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 15 December 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

No?

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 15 December 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

Ich habe Hunger Hunger Hunger, habe Hunger Hunger Hunger, habe Durst
Wo bleibt der Kaese Kaese Kaese, bleibt der Kaese Kaese Kaese, bleibt die Wurst

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 December 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Is there a tune to this?

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 15 December 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Yes.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 December 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm guessing it's oompah music.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 15 December 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

I wish I could sing it for you.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 December 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

It's okay, I've made up my own tune now.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 15 December 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

I grew up near an entire town that was a German Christmas market. Ladies & Gentlemen I give you Frankenmuth, Michigan:

http://www.frankenmuth.org/

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

it's no solvang

Penis, NV (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

michael moore paid a visit to frankenmuth in pets or meat. that's all i know about it.

Penis, NV (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

We always sung the Hunger song to our own tune, rather than the one printed in Deutsch Heute!

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Solvang is Danish you irredentionist!

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

(oh, and I think the second line is actually "wo bleibt das Essen...", but Käse fits too)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

i know it's danish. it's all equally aryan to me.

Penis, NV (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, I might venture down the other end of the town for this at some point, just for fancy sausages and gluhwein. I need to work out when there will be the minimal amount of other people there because Christmas shoppers in Glasgow scare the bejeezus out of me.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

There are a few variations, FP, but cheese is my favourite. If I could only eat one food for the rest of my life it would be cheese (and a short life).
