I just went to the website and got very excited.

Jonnie, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Spidey senses goin' crazy.

Jonnie, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's going to be EXCELLENT. This was one of the previews I got to see before "Fellowship Of The Ring", hee-hee.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was resolutely unturned on by said trailer. Explosions! Psuedo-witty dialog! Willem Dafoe's mugging! End.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But Toby McGuire has little spider-cilia coming out of his hands! How could that not appeal? Plus, dizzying swoop shots + Toby McGuire hanging upside-down in full costume = COMIC GEEK HEAVEN.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Looks Ace! I just watched 'The Quick and the Dead' again last night, and it reaffirmed my faith in Sam Raimi (after the decent but not spectacular 'A Simple Plan' and 'The Gift'). Also, Tobey Maguire has been in far fewer bad movies and far more good movies than your average actor; and many of the good movies he's been in have been made good simply by his acting. So, despite those nasty rumors that Raimi was Directing Without A Clue, Spiderman should be great.

After Jeff Goldblum in The Fly, surely this is just the scrubbed-up catch up. ;-) I had forgotten Raimi had something to do with it all, but surely if I want to watch Darkman I'll just see that instead. Can McGuire gargle "BURN IN HELL!" like Qui-Gon? ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kirsten Dunst is in it, she was good in Virgin Suicides. I'll go and see it. Though, I hope it's better than X-Men. Batman (the first one) needs a challenge for best comic book adaptation. When is it out? I hate the way trailers come out 6 months before the film, I get the feeling it will be held back until the summer holidays so all the pesky brats can see it.

Just checked on google...May 3rd in the USA.

UK = May 10th (I'm dubious of this).

And why do films always have those horrible take forever to load Flash sites?!

jel, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is funny...Spiderman has an average rating of 8.9 out of 10 on the Guardian film site! Thats loyalty!

Spid erman, spiderman, does whatever a spider can!

jel, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

arguing with ned about movies = even less productive than arguing with ned about music

Josh, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Josh is a wise, wise man. Actually, did you get yer DI discs?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ghost World was by far the best comic book adaptation. Though I guess you probably weren't thinking of indie comics...

Justyn Dillingham, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I did Ned and THANK YOU. The EPs have been quite great; after just a few listens I can see why you and Tom and Tim say the things you do about them.

Josh, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hmm. but the only thing is that i find Toby Maguire quite punchable, so i'm gonna have to think about this one. the plus point is that he will be wearing that there Spidey mask, the minus point is when he takes it off and starts speaking...

katie, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am IMPOSSIBLY excited about this. Spider Man was the first popcult artefact I ever got obsessed with. I think I saw a Johnny Romita era cover - back when Marvel first launched in the UK (when Neil Tennant was working for them!) - and it was the most glamorous thing I had ever seen in my tiny life. And the original, late 70s (?) movies were such a crushing disappointment. I'm not sure about the casting of Maguire AT ALL but the Dunster gets my whole-hearted approval. [Pet theory: in its wise-cracking high school nerd kicks monster ass moments, Spider Man is the unacknowledged template for Buffy]

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dudes, it's Spiderman, it's got lovely Kirsten in it, of course it's gonna rock.

chris, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The one defining thing about Spider-man which draws in the obvious Buffy comparisons is the idea that power = responsibility = fucked up social life. Where the two diverge is in putting on all over body stockings and not getting your mates involved. Peter Parker is witty and cool only when he puts the blue and red duds on, Buffy (at least from season three onwards and probably earlier) is cool all the time because she has found away of getting her friends involved with her responsibility.

Unfortuantely Spider-Man has pretty much lingered on the above point as its main form of dramatic tension for the last 40 years, Buffy wore it out in about ten episodes.

Saw the trailer on TV again this morning, and think it works very well. Kinetic, whilst reassuring that it has all the plot points down pat. I worry that they will fill two origins and a decent story in the mix, but I do think Raimi was pretty much born for this gig. That said though, whilst I think Dunst is terrific, she isn't a natural ginger - and died red hair never looks natural.

Pete, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot!

Andrew L, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've got two records by the Pastels on vinyl - what's wrong with Buffy liking them?

Jonnie, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a friend and former co-worker who's dating a woman who looks almost exactly like this, only blonde.

Dan Perry, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dan, I wish I was that friend and former co-worker. Jonnie, I will fight you for her tonight!

chris, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A blonde version of Kirsten Dunst with red hair = Kirsten Dunst.Duh!

Pete, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kirsten Dunst is one of those people I have no idea who they are, along with Ben Stiller, whoever he is. DG = Pinefox.

DG, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

she looks like a cheesy quaver

mark s, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are you mocking me, Ptee? I WILL NOT BE MOCKED.

I remember when I first met this guy, he told me that she couldn't see any resemblance between herself and Kirsten Dunst. When I met her, I decided she was mental, because they really do look alike.

Dan Perry, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cheesy quavers = yum, so that fits obv.

(i must stop saying yum today)

Jeff W, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

just saw a trailer for it last night, and yup T. Maguire looks just as punchable as i had feared. *grumbles*

katie, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He can't look in any way as punchable as a hobbit!

Jonnie, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Spidey Vs. Hobbits: FITE!!!

katie, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Toby Magto look punchable, Peter Parker is the uber-victim of bullies.

Pete, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

grrrrr Ghost World is not being released on the big screen in New Zealand, yet that awful Shallow Hal piece shit is. Hopefully Ghost World will make it here as a festival film. Check out Bring It On for krazy Kirsten Dunst cheerleading action. Spiderman will be choice. Sam Raimi already has Spidey vision sorted.
