"I really like the way you get the blueness of the veins coming through the skin."

....

The Queen last viewed the portrait following the second sitting and remarked that it looked "very friendly"

Harris aimed to capture the Queen's "obvious charm and friendly quality".

"I wanted to avoid the formal sort of portrait with all the jewellery and pomp and splendour," said Harris.

"I wanted to capture the lady as she is with all her humour and reality."

He added that the Queen appeared to enjoy the sittings: "I'm only too happy to be sitting absolutely motionless, doing nothing," she told Harris.

I really have little to add to any of this.

Rolf's given her maj his nose.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 19 December 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, he has at that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 December 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

He's gone for an awkward shaped canvas there, hasn't he? That tight fit makes her look too uncomfortable. Plus she's pulling a face like she's just bitten the head off a koala.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 19 December 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the queen had to inhale and hold her breath, just to fit into the frame.

I keep reading his name as ROFL Harris. I need to get off the Internets.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Monday, 19 December 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Saggy tits and a beer belly.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 19 December 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

And the Queen doesn't look any better.

It has to be said that my entire knowledge of Rolf consists of that one Goodies episode and Orbital's "Stylo."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 December 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I have Rolf Harris' autograph. If I were a self-consciously ironic student-type, I would think that that made me cool. He drew a little Rolfaroo on it, I think that makes it better somehow.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 December 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

does anyone remember the rolf harris line of kids paint brushes? they were basically a tube of acrylic paint with a brush that you screwed on the end of the tube so you didn't need to be worried with the ever so tiresome task of sticking the brush in paint?

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

i liked last years better

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Don't remember the paint brushes, but I do remember these.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Which begs the question... was Rolf the founding father of folktronica?

NickB (NickB), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

He lives somewhere near me, but I don't know where.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

which he wasn't actually in himself...

> and Orbital's "Stylo."

there's a great B&S song with a stylophone solo in it too, but i forget which 'lovesick on a sunny afternoon...' (ah 'Mayfly'). probably not up your street though.

i remember him in the 'learn to swim' adverts.

was some of his art for sale in local picture shop last year when i went o buy picture for ma. was expensive and probably took him all of an hour.

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 12:21 (twenty years ago)

he came across very well in the show, i thought, if a little overly obsequious with the queen (tho understandably so, given the circumstances)

i am not a nugget (stevie), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 14:36 (twenty years ago)

I'd like a Cliffs Notes on exactly who this chap is.
