The Annual Twixt Christmas And New Year Pub Crawl 2005: The Holborn Heptagon

This year, seven pubs, binge drink Britain and some smart alec to draw and show that the pubs picked do not actually make a Heptagon (I SAID NOTHING ABOUT A REGULAR HEPTAGON).

So the plan is to go drinking on Thursday 29th as follows:

The Enterprise
3:45 The Dolphin
4:30 The Princess Louise
5:15 The Newton Arms
6:00 The Ship
6:45 The Old Red Lion
7:30 The Old Nick

As usual, all of the pubs are intersting historically and/or architecturally, one of them will almost certainly be shut and/or not sell us anything, and we may end up staying wherever fits all of us like last year.

If there is a Top 100 (which there probably won't be) it will be TV. So see you on the 29th for the day that is more popular that Christmas and New Year put together. If we are lucky.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Great. I can drop by the office and check my email in the midst of the drinking.

Kate Classic (kate), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

T'Enterprise at 3pm naturally.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, clearly not as popular as previous years. Verily, we have stopped Fapping in London.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Well, what do you expect, after you lot have hived off the entire FT crowd to LiveJournal? Post it over there, I'm sure you'll get more responses.

Kate Classic (kate), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

let's hear it for unity.

how about an old-ilx FAP and a separate nu-ilx FAP?

snowkitten (g-kit), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

i'm out of town, sadly.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

..and the "older than time itself" FAP for those of us who can't even remember how long we've been here?

x-post

Kate Classic (kate), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

I have only been into two of these pubs. This will be an adventure. Also I do believe this years obligatory New York guest is hstencil, right?

This is a really good event for first-time fappers I think, we had a couple last year who weren't scared off, despite the horror that was The London Pub.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Hey, my brother came to the one last year!

Kate Classic (kate), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

I'll be there, almost certainly!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

i said we should have a separate FAP board - i didn't notice this thread amongst all the other stuff

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

ah it's not like you wouldn't have known about it anyway though eh?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

i said we should have a separate FAP board

I approve of this, actually. I don't know why it had never occurred to me.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

i said we should have a separate FAP board - i didn't notice this thread amongst all the other stuff

but clearly you did... within an hour of the thread being posted!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

it's too bad the calendar never got a bookmark option and people forgot/stopped bothering to update it really. Shame on methem!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

p.s. won't be there for 29th as i'll be having my own boozefest at my home.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

I actually find that the smaller/less publicised miniFAPs tend to be better anyway. You actually get a chance to talk to people, instead of sitting in a corner feeling overwhelmed and not getting to say more than a few words to anyone.

Kate Classic (kate), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

*ahem* thread starts 3.01, i post 4:41, so that's within 2 hours. 1 hr 40 if you want to split hairs rather than just be wrong

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 19 December 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

leave it ee aint wurf it etc.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

maybe you want split hairs so it looks like there are more of them ;)

HI DERE I LIKE TEH DRINKING

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

as i post less each post seems more aggressive

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

oops i stand corrected!!!!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

i can repost again, with the italics the right way round and not quote my name in the quote by accident, if you like.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

i thought we were going to drink on the 27th, but i still can't find the thread i started.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

We're drinking on the 27th and the 29th. When in London etc...

27th is the Foundry, right?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

oh ok, so the 27th is sorted then? rad. the foundry's pretty central, right? i have no idea where anything is but i'm sure i'll figure it out.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

foundry - http://www.fancyapint.com/main_site/thepubs/pub2178.html

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

thanks, julio! lookin' forward to meeting y'all! dunno yet whether i can go out thursday, but i hope i can then, too.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I will be there for this, and fingers crossed for the 27th too.

My brother should also be involved.

Pete can I post this on LiveJournal? (har har)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Goths meet Popists uptown

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

i think my girlfriend is gonna invite some more people, i'm sure that's ok. apparently she knows tim hopkins! weird.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

No Tom, you cannot post it to LiveJournal because it is rubbish.

Knowing Tim Popkins is always weird. I've still not got over it.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

Imagine how I feel.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

I mean, imagine how weird *I* feel about people knowing me, don't imagine how I feel to the touch. That would be unpleasant for all concerned, especially you.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

Not as clammy as you used to be I'd imagine. Still happy to instigate the Feel Tim Popkins game.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

Clams. Mmmm.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

Well, at least it avoids the EEZOHAD.

Kate Classic (kate), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Yes.

Even though some of my grebt pals are livejournallers, I think if we added further mass we wouldn't get further than ONE pub I think, viz last year...

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

One-pub pub crawls are the best kind, I think. Less stupid walking.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

That tends to happen more at the end of the night.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

why is this on a thursday aaargh i have to work on the friday!

the memory of the day after last year's pub crawl still makes me shudder.

i second the idea of a one-pub crawl. walking is silly, and walking in this weather is frankly ludicrous.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

I'm in the country this year! I'm so going to try and make this, though getting home after all that drinking will be a bit more difficult..

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

In Worcester then France, so these r both somewhat out for me. Wednesday, however = YES.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Martin, this is far and away the least walking ever on a AFTTXANY Pub Crawl, even assuming we make the final pub.

i think i concur with ms clarke re lj announcing...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

shouldn't the final pub be the 'failsafe' - in that people who can't be arsed with walking from pub to pub can just go there and wait for others to join, or just turn up later in the evening when everyone will be there (except me possibly, am undecided)?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

oh bother, this starts 45 minutes after i arrive at work. in 34l1ng. move the fap please, so i can fit it into my 7pm lunch hour!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

why is this on a thursday aaargh i have to work on the friday!

boo hoo, I'm working every day next week barring Monday, get out drinking and be a man.

NB, could possibly make it from het Shijp onwards. Great last pub there too, Gareth should like it. plenty badger

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

i will be at the foundry on the 27th

cant make most of the 29th, but i can make the last one, at around 7-730ish, is this the one with badger beer? that would be really great, if that one was saved until i could come.

golden glory on tap?!!?! this would be the best thing since the flying saucer in durham, nc

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

that is to say i will also be at the 29th, but not until the evening

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

An actual heptagon! Can come to this once released from the office, whenever that is. But the later pubs are the ones I know least, so that works nicely for bold new venues for catching up with you all.

Magnus (Magnus), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

I shall be there

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

I guess I should go to the early pubs and skip the laters ones then. But damn, that Golden Glory.

The Hills Are Alive With Celibate Cries (kate), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

I will be at all the pubs.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm at work too, but it's not far for me to get to, so I think I'll be joining you at the Newton Arms.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

I also will be at all the pubs. Lovely pubs. V.much looking fwd to the badger beer.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Me too. I shall be at all of them.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

I might come, but like don't hold me to it.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

jel, we haven't seen you for aaaaaaaaaages, come out and play!!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 22 December 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

also bump.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 26 December 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

I have fond memories of last year's crawl - featuring the best/weirdest two questions ever asked of me immediately upon entry(I'm looking at you Lex and Abby) - so I will definitely be attending this year's, though not until later on. x

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Monday, 26 December 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

Bouncebouncebouncebounce.

I will be at all the pubs.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

(I've corrected the link to the Enterprise in the first post, btw, in case people don't know where it is)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

i will be on the megabus to cardiff, hence at none of the pubs :( i demand drunken inexplicable txts plz.

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

I intend to be at all of them too.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

i will be along as soon as i've finished my early spring cleaning (which at the current rate of progress means somewhere around last orders).

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

My plan for the day seems much the same as Toby's.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 29 December 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

I seem to be finishing work at one instead of six, so I may come. We had no hot water in our house this morning, so I need a bath.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 29 December 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

should be at Old Nick for 7.30/8 but can't stay late sadly.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 29 December 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

er, maybe next year, have a good time.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 29 December 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

i'm ill, so I can't make it now..

going to start taking vitamin cs to make sure i'm healthy in time for next year.

jellybean (jellybean), Thursday, 29 December 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

i have been distracted into baking bread and downloading the merzbox, but i'm still hopefully of making the ship, at least.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 29 December 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

I was wondering if I could have a late lunch with you in the enterprise, but 3pm is rather too late, considering I'm starving already.

Bloomin typical the the pub you're in when I finish work is the one furthest away from me! I am mobile phone-less too so won't be able to check if you're sticking to schedule which is rather annoying.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 29 December 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

V I think it's a fairly safe bet that the crawl won't be running ahead of time, if that's any help.

I'll be along when I manage to haul myself out of work.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 29 December 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm busy doing nothing at work, will probably come along to the Ship + the rest.

ledge (ledge), Thursday, 29 December 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Vicky, can you not phone one of us from your work phone before leaving there?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 29 December 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

I will be there at some point, not sure when, but probably by Princess Louise time.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 29 December 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

I didn't think I had anyone's phone number as they're all on my mobile, but I've just worked out how to get hold of one, ta!

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 29 December 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

I will prolly be at the Lousy first off.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 29 December 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

that was fun! even though my heptagon degenerated to a point.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 29 December 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

only made it to last pub. disappointed to miss out on my inaugural badger on tap, but in bottles is fine. in an uncharacteristic fit of sensibility, i decided against post-oldnick booze and continued home instead.

resisted the apposite lure of kebab at the...place i forget the name of on holloway road, and settled for the more prosaic pleasure of chips

terry lennox. (gareth), Thursday, 29 December 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Oh good grief. Why did I go to the Lamb? Ruin.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 30 December 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Haha, one of 'em boarded up when they saw you coming?

StanM (StanM), Friday, 30 December 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

robster (robster), Friday, 30 December 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

I am so sorry I missed this. I went home because I felt a bit ill and I hadn't eaten all day and then I passed out on the sofa and didn't wake up until 11:30. It obviously did me good, but I would have liked to come. Thanks to Kate and Matt for encouraging text messages.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 30 December 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Leaving at 9 was a pretty good idea, except I then went to a party featuring Everyone on Bowlie in two small rooms. My takeaway, as they say, is that Singstar Nindie is only a matter of time.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 30 December 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

i'm so glad i stopped after the nick, i think i was Quite Drunk Enough Already, Thank You Very Much, i worked this out about halfway through singing "the impossible dream" with pete...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 30 December 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Yay Carsmile! Grimly Fiendish and I intend to end a Glasgow FAP by singing that, but booze made me forget to do it last night...

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 30 December 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Taking Sides - singing The Impossible Dream with Pete vs. singing "you're just a fat N1ck D4stoor" at a complete stranger. I feel bad for him.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 30 December 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Who - Nick, or his fat lookalike? I'm going to sing that at Nick next time I see him, to confuse him. Once I'm done with The Impossible Dream, that is.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 30 December 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

(it would be better if it were a thin N1ck D4st00r, obviously, as that is much less likely)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 30 December 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes, much fun was had! Especially outside Parker Place - if only it had a caption that said "Kate: Let's BUY IT!!! And start the ILX Pub!!!"

Drinking only sherry (until the Badger bar) was a very good idea. It's impossible to get drunk on the stuff. And I did have to get up early this morning to travel to Herts to see my relations.

ALL YOUR BASE NOW BELONG TO SYCORAX!!! (kate), Friday, 30 December 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

That bottled golden Badger stuff is amazing.

Nice to see you all. I like that photo with me and the pint, I look like a right fat old soak.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 30 December 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

Phone fun in pubs is BAD! I speak as someone who is just bitter as everyone else in the pub the other night was playing "type rude words into your phone and see what predictive text comes up with" and my pre-historic phone doesn't even *do* predictive text.
