can someone please explain me how the new lauren laverne xfm ads are meant to work?

ok. there are 2 ads in last week's time out for lauren laverne's breakfast show on xfm, both with the tagline "the first lady of breakfast". in the first one she's standing in front of dubya and slightly to his left where laura would be, he's got his hand over his heart and so has she (i'm guessing this is sth to do w what you do when you're doing the pledge of allegiance?), but she's wearing a killers badge and doing the devil horns so he can't see but we can. flip the page and there's another one. in this one she's in the back of a car with jfk. she's wearing another badge that i recognise but can't identify and gurning at the camera, he's smiling at her in what looks like admiration. ok, a) so she's subverting the power of EVIL with the power of ROCK; b) the good guys like her. but that by itself is lame - there must be more to it. how is this meant to make us want to listen to her show on xfm? please, what am i missing?

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 19 December 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

and surely all you need to get people to tune in to lauren laverne is a pic of lauren laverne? i would listen myself if xfm weren't so fucking dire.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 19 December 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Just wait until Laverne is on Strictly Come Ballroom in a few years time.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 19 December 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

If they Photoshop her side by side with Taft then I might listen.

[that old dog]

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Lauren! The kids are now playing "Punka" on heavy rotation. That means they will have caught up in three years!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

I think they're hillarious! Especially the Bill Clinton one because he just looks like he wants to give her a big old one, like every indie boy in the world.

It's because she's the "First Lady Of Radio" or whatever the tag line is. In America, the First Lady is the official title of the president's wife.

The one with Reagan, she looks demented, but it's still great.

Kate Classic (kate), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

i gave her something, once. wonder if anyone can guess what.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

the clap? a slow clap? a clapped-out ford fiesta?

an interview?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

Demo tape.

clue is in the question.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

an answer?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

nope. i'm half-enjoying this. bvut it is a true story from the indie front line.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

'96 style.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

really short anecdote. i could pad it out.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

I want to give her something.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

a piece of your mind?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

As lovely as LL is, she seems to have turned into a corporate whore. She's in more bad shows than Jimmy Carr these days. After the first 10 minutes of gazing at her visage, the dross that you have to watch to see it brings me down.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

chick's gotta eat

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

I'd give her something to eat.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

she is great, though. i worked with her when she covered on the phill jupitus radio show a few years back, and she was great fun to work with, really sharp and awake, and she's very funny.

emma b was great to work with too.

foxy boxer (stevie), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

Her dripping contempt for half the bands on CD:UK is a joy to behold, and waking up in the mornings is so much easier now I don't have to listen to that cnut O'Connel.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

I dislike this for the same reason I dislike that chap off Popworld - if you don't like the bands, don't be on a show presenting them. Otherwise it makes you a moral-free characterless charlatan, and LL has fallen into that catagory in recent years. Such a shame, but there you go.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

indie

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

you're digging in the wrong place?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

the upshot might be that if Laverne whores on TV enough she might do better if she ever gets round to releasing some music again. that could be nice.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

It's because she's the "First Lady Of Radio" or whatever the tag line is. In America, the First Lady is the official title of the president's wife.

yeah i got that, but why is that meant to make me listen to xfm? i don't give a fuck about the president's wife and i suspect most of xfm's target audience don't either.

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

you gave her indie? well done!

xxpost

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

xxpost

And she made Lisa Scott-Lee cry, of course.

I think she fits on cd:uk, though, as she does seem to be enthusiastic about most of the acts who are on (which appears to be split down the indie/pop middle these days), perhaps throwing a comic aside here and there, but nothing too scathing. Plus, Myleene teasing her about how much LL 'loves' the Stereophonics is amusing ;)

carson dial (carson dial), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

i don't give a fuck about the president's wife and i suspect most of xfm's target audience don't either.

my guess is that the ad conceptual people were so pleased with themselves for coming up with the whole 'First Lady' analogy (perhaps at the expense of one teary-eyed Claire Sturgess) they took the rest of the day off, went to the pub and then decided that it didn't matter what your campaign is saying as long as it's saying something.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

I dislike this for the same reason I dislike that chap off Popworld - if you don't like the bands, don't be on a show presenting them.

I think you're misreading their cynicism. I reckon they actually do love the bulk of the cheesy pop they introduce, and yet know how it's basically ridiculous for anyone over 15 to actually love cheesy pop, and so their grouchiness is a form of self-deprecation. They're rarely out-and-out rude about the acts they're talking to/about though, it mostly comes over as good-natured joshing.

Or possibly I'm just fooling myself. I love them both though, they make me laff. I mean, I watch/listen to them cos I like the pop. And yet I can enjoy them taking the piss out of the pop too. Am I a moral-free characterless charlatan as well? Maybe.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Simon and Miquita are OUT. but i'm not sure who's IN.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

I want simon to fill in the bits on the (only exists in my dreams) 24 hour ant+dec channel, when ant+dec are asleep.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Simon Popworld stealing mobile phones with Lady Sov was one of the funniest things I've seen this year...

carson dial (carson dial), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Simon Jewfro and Lauren L are just part of a greater "Smash Hits" style love of pop though, innit?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

ok right so no one *really* knows how these ads are supposed to work then? c'mon, you're clever, pop-literate people! hum. i am annoyed! (er, not with yous lot. with them for being even more rub than i'd thought.) i thought i was missing something very obvious/over my head, but apparently not. perhaps it's just the adworld thing of "well, if you're talking about it, it's worked" but the belgian and i had a big discussion about it when we first saw them but neither of us are listening to xfm as a result. if anything it's intensified the feeling of revulsion (towards xfm, not ll).

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

There really isn't anything there, I think. Take phrase 'the first lady of radio', illustrate in ways to a) remind people that Lauren Laverne, she's that one, isn't she b) distract from the fact that 'first lady of breakfast' is sort of meaningless c) make it 'X-ish' if you can have the time. No-one's mentioned the Clinton one, where she appears to be clapping, but may just be yawning.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

but that's... just... SHIT. i mean, how much did they spend on this? and why bother? hello, xfm dudes! over here! jump in river now! w rocks in yr socks!

i ain't seen the clinton one. i feel privileged. once i've finished this clearlake album i may go and play kenickie.

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

The thing that always seems a bit odd about using visual billboards to advertise radio shows where you can't actually see the presenter only hear them is...well...that.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

And the trend for doing this has meant that in the last 10 years even radio presenters have to be attractive i.e. attractive enough to appear on a billboard ad or magazine page.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

chris moyles.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

I don't know; I just think they're funny and they make me laugh. I don't care if I listen to XFM as I've not got a radio.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

no that all makes sense (having deejays on billboards) inasmuch as any advertising makes sense, trying to get you to tune in to the person/show rather than the music (yeh good fucking try, whatevs, dude just play good music and less ads, it's a piece of piss). even minging ones like moyles (he had his lunch at the same table as me once. his lunch was 7 packets of crisps!) but i just. don't. get. these. ones.

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

There's really nothing to get. They don't really NEED a message, or at least one that makes much sense.

Theorry, radio presenters, as with TV presenters, have generally become more 'attractive' over the last ten years - do you agree or not?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

i don't have enough data to respond. probably on pop radio, yes. colin murray is fitter than dave lee travis. but y'know, STEVE LAMACQ.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

there was a time when colin murray wasn't a twat :(

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

i think he's ok. but thinking on it, i haven't heard him in a year or two.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

Do DJs have to be more attractive now they all seem to have studio webcams?

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

Danny Baker?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Stop mentioning DJs who started in the industry more than 15 years ago!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

i think maybe we're seeing people who are 'just' radio djs -- because of the increase in tv channels and music tv, i would imagine agencies sign people up to do radio but with an eye to tv, that kind of thing. radio has a kind of 'they know about music' cachet.

hahaha i remember when bbc2 used what'sherprettyface from salad and mtv to present its glasto coverage one year. much appreciated.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

curiously though, many people move from TV to radio not the other way round. and they wouldn't have got on TV without being attractive or particularly talented (or both, though that is rare).

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

Lots of comedy things move from radio to TV

* Try different keywords.
* Try more general keywords.

that's right.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

A slight return to the original point If the people who are criticising LL for selling out are doing exactly what they want to do in life and following their career dreams, they have a point, but if not and they are working in a company just ‘cos it pays the bills and they haven’t had the courage to follow their dreams, then it’s smacking slightly of hypocrisy and resentment. To my mind Laurent treads the careful line between staying true to her passion in music and being in a (relatively) mainstream position. Jesus, it’s not as if she’s on Virgin! And on CD:UK she’s never sycophantic to Westlife or anything. At least she’s is still able to bring less well known musicians to the XFM breakfast audience and hey! If that means playing the odd Coldplay record then I dunno go have a shit at that point or something. The marketing campaign is stupid, but we’ve all bloody noticed it, so it’s done its job. If there were no stupid poster, they’d be less awareness of the station, they’d not be able to sustain their audience and the station’d close down, leaving us with the ace but tiddly 6Music and Parky playing modern jazz. Give the girl a break!

Nobodys Prawn (Nobodysprawn), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Nobodys Prawn is right. If it wasn't for the sake of this one advertising campaign, there would absolutely nothing to listen to in the morning except for modern jazz. Definitely.

All the female presenters on Radio 1 and Xfm are, I would say, attractive (tho I don't really 'like' any of them). It may or may not have any bearing on why they are there. Mind you, I fancied Anthea Turner for about two weeks back in 1990.

It's a good question, for another thread maybe: What was the last advert you saw (press, TV, internet, whatever) that actually single-handedly made you purchase the product advertised or incorporate the product advertised into your life?'

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Jupitus is the reason loads of people won't listen to 6Music in the first place as far as I'm concerned. They think it's him, day in day out blethering on, worse than he does on Buzzcocks. Put Stuart Maconie's weird stuff on that gets played out Sunday nights on weekday mornings. Nobody'd get out of bed, just cuddle up to some weird electronica from a Belgian with a wonky moustache . It'd be like the 3 day week in no time!
