Merry Christmas ILX!!

It's been a rubbish year for me and I'm not sure how great Christmas will be, I could start a thread about it, but I know I'd regret it straight away...(so this is not a thread about that)

Anyway, as I am now on holiday until January, I thought I would just start a MERRY CHRISTMAS or holiday of your choice thread! It's also Modranect, I think, I know nothing other than it being an anglo-saxon solstice festival!

Merry Christmas! Have fun! Peace out!

Laters.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Rah for Jel and may your new year be a better one! :-) And Merry Christmas and happy holidays to y'all as well -- tomorrow I go home for a week to relax and enjoy life.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Merry Christmas to you too, jel, and take care of yourself. Merry Christmas to everyone else too. I'll be the sad bastard posting amidst the tumbleweed on the 25th...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

Merry Christmas Jel! It's been an up and down year for me, trying to look at the good though.

I hope you can manage to enjoy yourself, whatever the circumstances.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

"happy holidays" :-)

inger lynde (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 22 December 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

Aw, jel, if you weren't you, you could look at that photo of yourself in the antlers and then you would smile and be cheered up, even if just for a little while, but maybe it doesn't have the same effect on you that it did on me.

Anyway, Christmas is over-rated. If it isn't a good time, then it's just a not-good time, not a not-good Christmas. Calendar-dependent fun is a silly concept. (note: I hate fun)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 22 December 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 22 December 2005 05:30 (twenty years ago)

Merry Christmas to all of you. I won't be spending any sort of traditional family Christmas (haven't done so for years), so you won't probably be the only one checking ILX on the 25th, Martin.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 22 December 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

I've had a pretty traumatic year as well, if its any consolation. I expect christmas to be traumatic but right now I'm looking out over palm trees and towerblocks, drinking a beer, whilst doly parton, patsy cline or a clone sings some kind of christmas song. I'm pretty merry right now. So merry right now to you all.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 22 December 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

Merry merry to all again, I'm about off to the airport. Have a good holiday. :-)

melancholy christmas everyone!

bittersweet goodbye to 2005... one of the strangest and most difficult years of my life. i'm ever grateful, but looking forward.

nein Socken (nein Socken), Thursday, 22 December 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

At that time, under the old Julian calendar, December 25 (or eight days before the calends of January as Bede puts it) was also the winter solstice. The problem with this is that if the Anglo-Saxon calendar was a solar lunar calendar, then it could not have a starting point that was a fixed solar date (at least not have such a fixed date and operate with any accuracy). Bede may have confused an Anglo-Saxon pagan mid-winter festival with a New Year's celebration. Or it is possible the actual start of the new year was on the Full or New Moon near the solstice. It is also possible the Anglo-Saxons used a sideral month and somehow managed to reconcile its differences with the solar year (though it would be as difficult to do this as reconciling the start of a lunar calendar using synodic months in such a fashion). Finally, the most distinct possibility perhaps is the Anglo-Saxon Heathens used more than one calendar for more than one purpose. That is they could have used a solar calendar separate from the one Bede presented, and it was the solar calendar whose new year began on December 25. There have been many theories as to why the year began on December 25, ranging from Roman borrowing to influences of Mithraism, but few have thought it the start of a separate calendar. The possibility is distinct however.

Laura!! I was just looking at the DVD of that very film not a week ago, debating perhaps PURCHASING it! I believe my mom still has the VHS of the She Ra and He Man Christmas Special that we taped off the tv, but that's not as high quality as a DVD would be.

Merry Christmas / Peace on Earth yaay, ILX!

I also had possibly the weirdest/difficult/wtf year of my life in 2005. But damn, we're all stronger and better for it, right? RIGHT. Up and at them.
I'm in Vancouver now (not Mtl), where it just stopped raining, and is over 10degreesC and, omg, I see some blue sky. I am jetlagged and was also just dancing around my bro's apt to his itunes on random - Kayne West, Daft Punk, PM freakin' Dawn. haha, awyeah! So, yes, it's all OKAY.

(HeManSanta is awesome.)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 22 December 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I am celebrating peace on Earth by listening to Alive 2 by Anthrax! I guess that's kinda pagan! I'll watch the DVD later!

I like She-Ra's outfit!

Merry Christmas!

Kayne West, Daft Punk, PM freakin' Dawn. haha, awyeah!

This sort of sounds like my iTunes at random, to be honest. YEAH.

I bought a yummy loaf of cinnamon raisin bread to have for breakfast tomorrow, though. mmmmmm.
