Nj transit is a lot fancier than I remember it being!
― highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Saturday, 1 November 2008 18:09 (seventeen years ago)
You know, two of the most difficult times in my life were on trains. Not because of the trainrides themselves, but the circumstances of my life. I can even remember a third time on a train that wasn't pleasant, either. I'm kindof afraid of riding on trains at this point. Bad vibe-ers.

t did u get one of the double deckers? those are the best esp compared with the terrible old brown seat pieces of shit

Yeah, double decker! I have only been on the brown ugly ones before! This is like LIRR!
Yo, Newark is hella depressing!
― highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Saturday, 1 November 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)
yeah :-/ tbh the ne corridor line is not the most beautiful train ride in the 'traditional' sense but if ur into postindustrial blight the first 20-30 minutes are great as u go through newark, elizabeth, rahway, etc

First train ride in 35+ years on the Amtrak Downeaster last week. It was great! None of the airline bullshit, a/c was better than plenty of flights I've been on, wireless was better than plenty of hotels I've stayed at, and stomping thru the cars to the little cafe was fun.

― Fizzles, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 07:05 (eleven years ago)
Fifty euro fine because I activated t the "travel day" in my eurail pass after sitting down in the train and not before boarding. There are so many expensive mistakes you can make when taking trains in France. Love the view out the window of the TGV from Lyon to Nice though.
― Lily Dale, Thursday, 10 July 2025 08:21 (ten months ago)
Nothing like slapping good faith in the face when you are the humble hand of a public service corporation.
Last time I took the SNCF, my return train departed three hours late from Paris. My total fare (to London) was close to 500 euros, I was eligible for a 50% reimbursement which turned out to be.... 27 euros. Either the Eurostar is expensive or intermediaries take much more than I thought. Not my money in this case, but a sad incentive to fly.
― Naledi, Thursday, 10 July 2025 08:40 (ten months ago)
On this trip, I opted to take the ferry from Dover to Calais instead of the Eurostar, and it was much cheaper and I quite liked it.

― Lily Dale, Friday, 11 July 2025 14:30 (ten months ago)
Went to Nice alone when I was dirt broke and needed a vacation. I remember: seafood pasta and a huge portion of osso bucco in the old town, the garden at the very top of Grasse (the perfume village), the sheer ugliness of Monaco (with some Formula 1 rehearsing), pointless hanging out around the Cannes film festival. One year before the truck attack. I flew though.
― Naledi, Friday, 11 July 2025 18:19 (ten months ago)
The swimming was wonderful; I left my hostel in the morning with my swim things and some cash but no valuables on me, walked through the Old Town, bought cherries at the market, then walked through an archway from the market out onto the beach and went in the water. Completely seamless transition from sightseeing to swimming.
I also met up with an old friend who is married to a man from Nice, and she invited me to a beach apero party hosted by her in laws which was really lovely - all ages, very friendly, with a potluck that was largely traditional niçois food, and with some niçois folk dancing that I was terrible at. That part of the trip was pure luck, of course, but I would have liked Nice even without it.
